(Speaking on the phone) “Hello Sarah? This is Jim. Heather told me you’re facing some challenges with your pecan tree. I can relate to that, as I was also stymied by grafting onto my pecan tree. The recommended 3-flap and 4-flap methods never gave me success. Very few grafts took, and those that did weren’t strong enough to handle the weight of the new growth. You’re welcome to come by my place and see what I’ve done. Afterward, I can help you work on your tree. I can also share some scion wood.”

“Jim, thanks for your offer. I’m very busy this time of year so prefer not taking time away from my garden. You are welcome to come by and see my tree, though.”

“The advantage of being retired is I can be more flexible with my schedule. Let me know the best day and time for you, and I’ll meet you at your place. By the way, I’ll text you a list of extra plants I have to share, in case you’d like to grow any of them.”

“Thanks, Jim. Tuesday at 9am works best for me. If that doesn’t work for you, let me know your availability.”

“Tuesday is perfect. I’ll see you then. Heather told me you’re her neighbor, but please provide directions to your actual home.”

“Hi Jim, welcome to my little garden.”

“It looks beautiful ... a wonderful blend of flowers and edibles. It’s well established, so you must have been working on this for many years.”

“Yes, it’s a work in progress and a major part of who I am. It keeps me grounded and energized.”

“I’d love a tour, so I can learn how each part has impacted you.”

“No one has ever shown an interest in how things have impacted me. They’ve all been more concerned about any impact on them. That is so refreshing to hear. Thank you for caring.”

“I agree, Sarah. It seems like people tend to be oblivious to anything other than their own personal impacts. Just look at relationships. People tend to be interested in what they expect to gain, not what they might be able to add to the other person’s life. I’m more interested in how my choices impact others than how things look, taste or feel to me. I’ve never wanted people to do what they felt I wanted. If it didn’t add to their experience, it held no interest for me.
