5:33 PM

Chloe Whitaker sat cross-legged on the floor of her bedroom, wearing only her bra and panties while surrounded by discarded t-shirts, shorts, and hiking clothes. Brushing her wavy blonde hair back behind her ears, Chloe sighed as she tried to figure out what to wear. Her best friend wasn’t helping the situation.

Olivia Grant stood in front of Chloe’s open closet holding up two shirts. “The blue one. It matches your eyes.”

“We’re hiking!”

“So?” Olivia frowned.

“I’m going to sweat,” Chloe pointed out.

“You can be sweaty and adorable,” Olivia shrugged before waggling her eyebrows as her green eyes sparkled mischievously. “Then you and Mason can get all sweaty together.”

“Ew, no,” Chloe scrunched her nose. “You know I’m a virgin.”

“Didn’t stop ya from letting Kyle feel you up at Prom,” Olivia grinned as she tossed her long raven hair over one shoulder.

“I never should have told you about that,” Chloe grumbled.

“It’s the most interesting thing to ever happen to you,” Olivia pointed out, still going through Chloe’s closet.

“This isn’t going to be like our last double-date, is it?” Chloe sighed. “Where I sit next to a guy who seriously needs a shower while you give Ryan head in the backseat?”

“No,” Olivia giggled. “Mason isn’t Jack. You know Mason: he’s funny!”

“He is,” Chloe smiled slightly, her cheeks slightly pink as she held up a faded gray shirt. “I’m wearing this.”

Olivia groaned. “No.”

“Yes!”

“No.”

“It breathes,” Chloe reasoned.

“It says ‘Adirondack Bird Festival 2024.’” Olivia made a face.

“So?”

“You’re eighteen,” Olivia stated plainly. “You’re an eighteen-year-old girl. You’re not dressing like my dad. I’m pretty sure my dad actually has that shirt.”

The girls looked at each other for a moment before bursting out laughing.

“You should dress more like me,” Olivia said, gesturing toward her tiny hiking shorts and cleavage-baring army green camisole.

“We don’t all have giant knockers,” Chloe rolled her eyes.

“True, you’re not as blessed by the titty-gods as I am, but you’re still adorable!” Olivia reasoned, pointing toward Chloe’s bra-clad breasts. “Mason will love getting his hands on those.”

“Not gonna happen!” Chloe growled.

“You said you liked him!”

“No, I agreed he’s funny,” the blonde countered. “There’s a difference.”

“You’ve had a crush on him since sophomore year,” Olivia pointed out.

“I have not!”

“You styled your hair for chemistry every day,” Olivia smirked.

“I’m majoring in chemistry in the fall,” Chloe mumbled.

“I don’t see the connection,” Olivia scoffed.

Chloe grabbed a pillow from her bed and tossed it across the room.

Olivia caught it effortlessly. “Assault!”

“You deserved it.”

“I’m trying to help,” Olivia laughed. “Ryan said Mason specifically asked to make sure you were coming tonight.”

Chloe felt warmth creeping into her cheeks. “He did?”

“He did,” Olivia smiled. “Mason’s totally hot for you.”

A buzzing sound came from Olivia’s phone, indicating a text message. She dropped the pillow to take out her phone and read it.

Ryan: Leaving my house in twenty. Mason’s already here.

“Okay, Ryan will be here soon,” Olivia declared, gesturing at Chloe in her underwear. “I’m sure Mason will be fine if you wanna go like that, but maybe we should pick something, hm?”

“Okay okay, I’ll wear the blue cami,” Chloe sighed, shaking her head.

“Finally, a decision,” Olivia smiled.

Chloe looked around her room. Framed photographs from high school covered one wall. Prom. Soccer games. The recent high school graduation. Pictures with Olivia. A few featured Ryan, the high school quarterback and Olivia’s boyfriend of two years. It wouldn’t be long before everything around her was packed into boxes as she prepared to leave for college.

“It’s weird,” Chloe admitted quietly.

“What is?” Olivia asked.

“We’re actually done,” Chloe said.

“High school?”

Chloe nodded. “I keep waiting for it to feel real.”

“My mom cried when she bought dorm supplies,” Olivia smiled.

“My dad cried when he saw the tuition bill.”

They both laughed.

“Hey, you’re valedictorian; you got a few scholarships,” Olivia pointed out.

“I guess,” Chloe sighed. “And I’m looking forward to college. It’s just ... I don’t want everyone to drift apart.”

Olivia walked over and sat beside Chloe, gently bumping the shorter girl’s shoulder.

“We’re not drifting apart,” Olivia said. “You’re stuck with me forever, Clo.”

“Mason’s going north.”

“Only three hours,” Olivia shrugged.

“And I’m heading to Albany,” Chloe continued.

“So?” Olivia asked.

“So, things change,” Chloe answered.

Olivia was quiet for a moment before she smiled. “They do, which is why tonight matters.”

Chloe looked up.

“One last adventure,” Olivia insisted. “No homework, no teachers, no fucking curfew.”

“My parents would disagree with that last one,” Chloe giggled.

“They’ll survive,” Olivia smirked. “You’ve been shy and reserved all through high school. Let’s go out and party like the adults we are.”

Another text.

Ryan: Five minutes.

Olivia jumped to her feet. “Decision time!”

“I said I’d wear the blue one,” Chloe sighed.

“And the shorts,” Olivia tossed them to Chloe.

“Fine.”

“And when Mason falls in love with you, I’m taking all the credit,” Olivia said as Chloe stepped into the shorts.

“Sure, let him play with your boobs,” Chloe snorted.

“No way,” Olivia gestured to her chest. “These girls belong to Ryan.”

7:54 PM

The clear mountain stream rushed over smooth stones as the last rays of sunlight filtered through the towering pines. Ryan Mercer skipped another stone across the water, smirking when it jumped five times. The tall quarterback then ran his fingers through his blond hair before stepping back so Mason Delgado could take his turn.

“Dammit!” Mason grumbled as his stone plunged straight to the bottom.

“That was pathetic,” Ryan chuckled.

“Yeah, whatever,” Mason waved him off, nearly falling into the water as he stumbled.

Olivia burst into laughter from where she sat with her bare feet resting in the cool water. “You’re both idiots.”

“And yet you’re dating one of us,” Mason pointed out, a small smirk on his face as his dark curls hung over his forehead.

“I never claimed to have good judgment!” Olivia called out.

Ryan pressed a hand dramatically against his chest. “You wound me!”

“You need a heart for it to break,” Mason gave his friend a manly punch on the shoulder.

“Can you believe this guy, Chloe?” Ryan gestured at the other guy.

Chloe shrugged innocently. “I’m staying out of this.”

The four of them had spent the last hour drinking and laughing by the deep pond carved into the mountain stream. Their backpacks and bags rested beneath a nearby pine tree while a couple of blankets were spread out over the forest floor. Ryan had connected his phone to a portable speaker, which was playing soft country music.

Carrying his beer in one hand, Mason ran over to his backpack. He downed the rest of the liquid in two big gulps and set the empty bottle aside. Mason then started rummaging through his backpack before triumphantly holding up a plastic bag. There was a big grin on his face as he gestured to the others.

“Ladies and gentleman!” Mason called out.

“Yes?” Olivia asked sweetly.

“Oh no,” Ryan laughed. “You brought them.”

“I told you I was bringing them,” Mason replied.

“Please tell me those aren’t what I think they are,” Chloe said.

“Fireworks!” Mason declared, revealing several sparklers, a handful of firecrackers, and two Roman candles.

“We’re in the woods!” Chloe gasped. “In a national park! You can’t have those!”

“I’m not stupid, I waited until we reached the water,” Mason said.

Olivia got to her feet and rushed over. “I wanna light a sparkler!”

“No!” Chloe stood as well. “You’ll burn down the forest and we’ll end up on the news.”

“As long as we stay by the water we should be fine,” Ryan reasoned.

“Please, Chloe!” Mason gave the blonde his best pout.

Chloe folded her arms. “I don’t know.”

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes,’” Mason grinned, glancing toward the sky. “Just a little longer.”

“Explosives and guns, am I safe here?” Chloe grumbled.

“Hey, the shotgun is here to keep you safe,” Ryan reasoned, gesturing toward the gun bag beneath the tree. “Dad always said to carry it in case of coyotes or bears.”

“Like you could hit a coyote,” Olivia teased, looping her arm through Chloe’s. “Come on, Chloe. I wanna relax.”

Ryan grabbed fresh wine coolers for the girls while they sat down on one of the blankets. Mason was near Chloe, doing his best to engage her in conversation. Chloe was smiling widely, her cheeks slightly pink. Passing Olivia her drink, Ryan sat next to his girlfriend and wrapped an arm around her affectionately.

“I do love this place,” Chloe smiled as she looked around.

Ryan nodded. “My grandfather brought me fishing here.”

“I remember you telling me that,” Olivia sighed happily as she leaned her head against his shoulder.

“I always figured I’d bring my kids here someday,” Ryan added.

“I’d like that,” Olivia smiled warmly.

Mason glanced around the secluded area. “I still can’t believe nobody else comes here.”

“They don’t know it exists,” Ryan replied. “My grandfather found the trail. I’m not sure the rangers even know the path.”

“It’s definitely worth the hike,” Chloe said quietly.

“It beats sitting with our parents watching fireworks,” Olivia said, her smile fading. “Plus everyone here isn’t talking about those missing campers every five minutes.”

The mood shifted slightly.

Ryan looked over at the stream. “My dad said they’re still searching.”

“They never found them?” Chloe asked.

“Nope,” Ryan shook his head.

Mason tossed a pebble into the water. “My uncle says everyone thinks somebody killed them.”

Olivia glared at him. “Mason!”

“What?” Mason asked.

Olivia gestured toward Chloe who had gone pale.

“But I’m sure it was just an animal or something,” Mason said quickly. “A bear.”

“My uncle knows Sheriff Harper,” Ryan whispered. “He said the campsite didn’t look like a bear attack.”

“W-what did it look like?” Chloe swallowed weakly.

“Don’t know,” Ryan shrugged. “My dad was just told it was strange and that there was enough blood to say they’re definitely dead.”

“Okay, that’s enough,” Olivia said quickly, noticing the expression on Chloe’s face. “It was some weird animal attack. And it has nothing to do with us.”

“So there isn’t some psycho waiting to kill us behind that big rock?” Chloe questioned quietly.

“The only psycho here is Mason,” Olivia replied reassuringly. “I promise.”

“Hey!” Mason exclaimed, looking offended.

9:17 PM

The sun had slipped below the horizon, leaving behind a deep purple sky. The first stars had begun to appear as the forest settled into the calm of a summer evening. Crickets had started chirping and frogs were belching as the boys started pulling out the fireworks. Most of the light was coming from a battery-operated lantern resting by their belongings.

Mason carefully handed Chloe a sparkler. “For you.”

“Thank you,” Chloe smiled shyly.

“They’re adorable,” Olivia whispered so only Ryan could hear.

“They really are,” Ryan agreed.

“What are you two whispering about?” Mason asked.

“Nothing,” Olivia answered way too quickly.

“I don’t believe you,” Mason narrowed his eyes.

“You shouldn’t,” Chloe giggled.

Olivia stuck out her tongue as Ryan stuck a Roman candle securely into a crack between two rocks.
