8:31 AM
Waking up alone was perfectly normal for Mike. It took him a few moments to realize why it bothered him. Amber was supposed to be in bed. His eyes opened to the sight of morning sunlight spilling through the gap in the curtains. The other side of the bed was empty, the sheet pushed back.
Mike sat up. “Amber?”
“You’re awake,” Amber said as she appeared in the doorway carrying two mugs.
The pretty brunette had changed back into the jeans and purple top she’d worn at the hospital. Her hair was pulled into a loose, messy not. She looked effortlessly beautiful. Her thin-framed glasses sat slightly crooked on her face. An effortlessly beautiful librarian.
“Did you think I left?” she asked, a soft smile on her face.
“Nah, I just didn’t know where you were,” he answered.
“You woke up and immediately started looking for me,” Amber grinned happily as she held out a mug. “Coffee?”
“You’re kind of annoying in the morning,” Mike observed, accepting the coffee.
“And you snore; we’re even,” she giggled, sitting on the edge of the bed.
“I don’t snore!” he exclaimed.
“Hm, it must have been the concussion,” Amber mused.
“You’re an archaeologist, not a neurologist,” Mike replied before taking a sip of coffee.
“I can be both,” she reasoned. “I’m also a chef.”
“You cooked?” he frowned.
“Scrambled eggs and toast, nothing crazy,” Amber explained.
“Thank you.”
“How’s your head?” she asked.
“Not bad, just a small headache,” he answered as he stood and reached for his shirt.
“No need to put a shirt on,” Amber giggled.
“Yet you felt the need to put a bra back on,” Mike gave her a look.
“Sucks for you,” she shrugged. “Anyway, you nauseated?”
“No.”
“How’s your vision?” Amber questioned.
“Fine.”
“Do you know who the president is?” she asked as they made their way to the kitchen.
“Unfortunately.”
Amber watched him for another moment before apparently deciding he wasn’t about to collapse. The two of them then sat down and enjoyed a nice breakfast. Mike was suitably impressed by Amber’s culinary skills. They talked and flirted while discussing their plans for the day.
Mike’s phone started vibrating just as they were finishing their meal.
“Work?” Amber asked.
“Eric,” he replied before answering the phone. “Hello.”
“Morning, Sleeping Beauty,” Eric said.
Mike rolled his eyes. “I was awake. And you called me.”
“Wanted to make sure you survived the night,” Eric explained.
“I did,” Mike confirmed.
“Anyone there to make sure you didn’t wander into traffic?” Eric asked.
Mike looked at Amber, who raised an eyebrow. “Yes.”
There was a brief silence.
“Oh,” Eric stated.
“Don’t,” Mike quickly replied.
“Did the archaeologist stay over?” Eric questioned in an eager voice. “You two do some excavating?”
Turning away from Amber, Mike sighed heavily. “Why are you calling?”
Eric laughed. “Just checking on my wonderful friend.”
“Bullshit,” Mike grunted.
“And because Harper told me to tell you that if you show up today, he’s personally driving you back home,” Eric explained.
Mike frowned. “I wasn’t planning on going.”
Eric laughed again. “Sure.”
“What’s happening up there?” Mike asked.
“I’m leading a team to check the area where you were attacked,” Eric explained.
“Keep an eye out for a cave or other entrance to the mountain,” Mike advised. “It might take its victims down from the clearing then into its lair.”
“Will do,” Eric agreed.
“And Eric?” Mike said slowly. “If you hear clicking, you leave.”
“I know, I know.”
“You’re not bringing volunteers, are you?” Mike questioned nervously.
“No. Too dangerous,” Eric replied. “Harper’s not taking any chances after what happened to you yesterday.”
“What’s the plan?” Mike asked.
“Me and three others,” Eric explained. “Maria Rodriguez with DEC. Remember her?”
“Yes, we’ve met,” Mike answered. “Who else?”
“A SAR team leader who’s also an EMT, plus a SAR technical-rescue specialist,” Eric confirmed. “Maria and I will both be armed. We’ll find where this thing is holed up, don’t you worry.”
“Just be careful, okay?” Mike requested, resisting the urge to tell Eric he’d seen a monster.
“Don’t worry, brother. We’ve got this,” Eric promised. “We’re professionals and we’re taking this seriously. You just enjoy your time with the cute girl.”
“I’ll do that,” Mike laughed. “Talk soon.”
“Bye!”
Mike kept the phone against his ear for another second before lowering it.
“You okay?” Amber asked.
“Yeah, just worried about them,” Mike answered slowly.
“They know what they’re doing,” she assured him.
“Against a bear, sure,” he replied carefully. “It wasn’t a bear.”
Amber bit her lower lip. “I know.”
“I almost told him,” Mike said quietly.
“Told him what?” she frowned.
“That it was something that can’t exist,” he explained.
“Is that what you believe?” Amber wondered. “That it’s something ... unnatural?”
Mike thought about it for a moment, having had the night to process what he’d seen. “I think so. Fuck, maybe I’m going crazy, but no animal is built like that.”
“If you’re right,” she began slowly, “why now? Where did it come from? Why is it suddenly attacking people?”
He looked at her in surprise. “You believe me?”
“I trust you,” Amber smiled. “And I’ve seen enough to know something weird is going on.”
“Maybe you’re right about it being related to that clearing,” Mike sighed. “I just, I feel like I’m insane for even considering this. At the same time, I’m worried about Eric and his team. Shouldn’t I be telling them every single detail so they can be prepared?”
“You told them what it looked like, where it attacked, how it attacked,” Amber reasoned. “You gave them all the information you had.”
“Maybe.”
2:29 PM
Most of Mike’s morning and afternoon had been spent doing absolutely nothing. He hated it.
After breakfast, Amber had driven him back to retrieve his vehicle, which had remained at Adirondack Park since the previous night. Then they’d gone their own separate ways. Amber returned to her apartment to shower and change, while Mike went home under strict orders from both Amber and Harper to rest.
He had tried.
Mike had watched a couple innings of a baseball game he didn’t care about, read a few chapters of a book without remembering more than a couple of sentences, and had checked his phone considerably more often than necessary. Nothing had helped the time pass.
Eric hadn’t called, which wasn’t too surprising. Amber had sent him a few texts, as had his sister. It had been a boring afternoon, but Mike was excited for his date with Amber. She had let him know she was on her way, so Mike had changed into a nice pair of jeans and a button-down shirt.
The moment there was a knock on the door, Mike shot across the room and opened the door. Amber stood in the hallway holding two plastic bags and wearing a white sundress with yellow flowers. Mike forgot what he was going to say. The dress wasn’t particularly fancy, but Mike loved it. It fell to just above her knees, simple enough for a summer afternoon. Her chestnut hair was loose around her shoulders, her usual glasses were on, and she wore a pair of flat sandals.
She smiled. “Hi.”
Mike continued staring.
Amber’s smile widened. “This is going well.”
“Hi,” his eyes traveled down her body and back up to her eyes. “Wow.”
A faint blush colored her cheeks. “This is going very well.”
“You look...” Mike trailed off as he struggled to find words in his vocabulary. “Really pretty.”
Her expression softened. “Thank you.” Amber then looked him over and nodded approvingly. “You look pretty too.”
“Thanks,” he laughed lightly.
“Very rugged,” she added.
“I have bruises and cuts from a fight,” Mike nodded.
“Very masculine.”
“Mild brain injury,” Mike concluded.
She grimaced. “That one’s less sexy.”
“Right,” he winced. “Sorry.”
Amber held up the bags. “Are you going to invite me in?”
Mike stepped aside and gestured. “Come in.”
With a smile, Amber walked past him. Mike watched her for a second longer than necessary.
“Were you checking out my ass?” she asked over her shoulder.
“No.”
“Wow, you answered that fast,” Amber laughed.
“So, um, anyway,” Mike coughed nervously. “What did you bring?”
“Supplies,” she answered, placing the bags on the counter.
Amber had brought two bottles of soda and a six-pack for drinks. There were also plenty of snacks, including: microwave popcorn, chocolate-covered pretzels, and a couple bags of gummy bears. Mike picked up a bag of gummy bears, a grin on his face as he laughed lightly.
“Are we twelve?” he asked.
“We’re having a movie night!” Amber exclaimed. “Well, movie afternoon. And you told me you like gummy bears, remember?”
“I remember,” Mike smiled.
He leaned toward her. She met him halfway in a brief kiss. It was nothing like Thursday night, when their flirting had finally pushed their lust to the point it boiled over. This kiss was less passionate, more familiar. It felt like a simple greeting. Mike liked that a lot.
Amber pulled back and smiled. “So.”
“So?”
“This officially counts as our first date,” she said.
“You spent the night and slept in my bed,” Mike pointed out.
“That did not count,” Amber shook her head.
“You stole my blanket.”
“My feet were cold,” she reasoned with a shrug.
“You made me breakfast,” he added.
“Medical supervision,” Amber replied.
“You kissed me.”
Amber considered that. “Therapeutic intervention.”
Mike smiled. “How professional.”
“I take patient care seriously,” she nodded firmly.
“You’re not a doctor,” he laughed lightly.
“Not yet.”
“You’re not studying to be that kind of doctor,” Mike smirked. “If last night wasn’t a date, what makes this a date?”
Amber gestured toward herself. “I put on a dress.”
“It’s a very nice dress,” he responded.
“I did my hair,” she added. “No more messy buns.”
“I liked it yesterday.”
She paused before smiling. “That’s sweet. What’s important is that you asked me out.”
“And that I acknowledged your presence is an honor?”
“Well, of course,” Amber giggled.
Mike’s phone buzzed. His eyes went toward it automatically. Amber didn’t say anything as he picked it up and checked the text. It wasn’t from Eric. Rachel had sent him a picture of his niece holding an enormous ice cream cone. The young girl had a huge grin on her face.
Rachel: Your influence.
Mike: Everyone loves ice cream.
“Everything okay?” Amber asked.
He showed her the picture. “Yes.”
“That your niece?” she asked.
“Yeah.”
“She’s adorable,” Amber smiled.
“She knows,” Mike nodded as Amber laughed.
She looked at the picture again. “Does your sister know about yesterday?”
“No,” his smile faded slightly. “I didn’t see a reason to worry her.”
“You were hospitalized,” Amber said.
“And I’m fine,” he pointed out.
Amber gave him a look.
“Relatively fine,” Mike winced, putting his phone down. “So, what’s the movie?”
Her expression brightened. “I have options.” Amber opened her phone and checked her notes.
“You made a list of bad movies?”
“We agreed on something bad we could make fun of,” she explained. “That required research.”
“Okay then,” he chuckled.
“Shall we order takeout and pick something?” Amber suggested.
3:41 PM
By the time the food arrived, Amber had rejected three movies.
“The shark one,” Mike suggested for the fifth time.
“No.”
“You haven’t even read the description!” he exclaimed.
“A tornado can’t be made of sharks, Mike,” she scoffed.
“And a tall, thin creature with long claws that clicks can’t exist,” Mike reasoned with a shrug.
“We’re not talking about that right now,” Amber insisted before taking a quick sip of beer. “Giant spiders?”
“Absolutely not,” he stated firmly.
“Scared of spiders?” she teased.
“No, I just don’t like anything with that many eyes and legs,” Mike chuckled.
Amber stole one of his fries.
“That was mine!” he protested.
“We’re dating now; that’s how it works when you’re on a date with a chick,” she reasoned.
They were sitting together on the couch, having moved closer to each other. Takeout containers covered the coffee table, and they each had a beer. Amber had kicked off her sandals and tucked her legs beneath herself. Mike had abandoned the button-down and changed into a t-shirt.
“Oh, this looks terrible,” Mike commented.
Amber leaned against him as she looked at the thumbnail of a muscular man holding a sword while lightning exploded behind him. A woman in medieval armor stood beside him, despite the description claiming the movie took place in modern-day Los Angeles.
“An ancient warrior teams up with a disgraced astrophysicist? All to prevent an interdimensional warlord from opening the Gates of Eternity?” Amber leaned forward eagerly. “This is the one.”
“You didn’t even hesitate,” he observed.
“Disgraced astrophysicist.”
“So the shirtless guy has nothing to do with it?” Mike asked.
“Well, I am a sucker for washboard abs,” she waggled her eyebrows.
“Now I don’t want to watch it,” he grumbled.
“Don’t worry, you’re hotter than him,” Amber kissed his cheek.
“Okay, we can watch.”
The opening credits appeared over what looked like stock footage of a thunderstorm. Amber settled in closer as Mike wrapped an arm around her and squeezed her shoulder. Within five minutes, the supposedly ancient warrior spoke fluent English and was able to use a smartphone.
“The guy doesn’t know what a car is, but figured out a phone in ten seconds?” Mike asked.
Amber leaned forward. “Absolutely fucking not.”
Mike and Amber continued eating while discussing how ridiculous the movie was. Half an hour later, the astrophysicist explained that medieval swords could disrupt quantum fields because iron was naturally resistant to dimensional frequencies. They both burst out laughing at that proclamation.
The date continued, and soon Mike stopped thinking about the mountain. There was only Amber, terrible dialogue, and cold fries. Amber would occasionally look over at him and kiss him softly. They held hands and sat as close to each other as possible.
5:34 PM
Deputy Eric Walsh wasn’t sure if he felt better or worse after having found nothing. He stood near the base of the ridge with his hands on his hips, looking up at the wall of granite rising above them. Somewhere up there was the clearing where they’d found the blood and Emma’s ring, but searching the area had found nothing.
Searching the base of the granite cliff had also yielded nothing besides the few blood splotches Mike had found. No more sightings of whatever had attacked Mike. Eric was of the opinion it was a sick bear, causing it to look so different to Mike than a regular black bear.
“This is as far as we’re going,” Eric declared.
“We heading back to the station?” Marcus asked.
Marcus Smith was a well-trained SAR technical-rescue specialist. The tall and muscular man had participated in many rescues in the Adirondacks and knew how to handle himself. Beside him was Sam Haloon, an SAR team leader and EMT with nearly twenty years experience.
The fourth member of their team was Maria Rodriguez. She was using her binoculars to search the ridge, one hand holding the sling of the long gun she carried. The DEC officer had been quiet for most of the afternoon. She was calm and professional, treating the Adirondacks as if something dangerous lurked nearby; which Chloe and Mike could both confirm was true.
They had worked slowly along the base of the ridge, never separating by more than twenty or thirty yards. Per instructions, no one ever disappeared from sight. Other than a few squirrels and birds, they’d seen nothing. There was no clicking and nothing had tried to kill them.
“We’ve still got plenty of light,” Maria protested as she lowered her binoculars.
“And I’d like to keep it that way,” Eric replied.
“No argument here,” Sam said.
Eric raised his radio. “Base, Walsh.”
“Go ahead, Walsh,” a male voice came over the radio.
“Lower slope team wrapping up,” Eric said into the radio. “We’re heading back.”
“Copy. Any findings?” the voice asked.
“Nothing significant,” Eric sighed. “No more blood, no caves, no dangerous animals.”
“Copy that.”
Eric clipped the radio back onto his vest, some of the tension easing out of his shoulders for the first time all afternoon. Mike Carter had scared the shit out of him last night and that morning. Eric hadn’t told him that. No, Eric had made jokes instead. That’s what a guy did when talking to his friend about something serious.
Then you listened very carefully. Their group had stayed together and listened for any strange sounds. They were leaving safely. Eric was hoping whatever it was had been injured badly enough that it crawled off somewhere to die. Soon Doctor Stein would call and tell Harper she’d identified the blood as some obscure imported animal that had escaped from a private collection. Just something kept illegally.
“Let’s move,” Eric instructed.
Marcus shouldered his pack and started downhill with Sam. Maria waited for Eric, falling in step behind the deputy while keeping a lookout for anything unusual. Everything was normal. Same granite cliff, same trees, and same plants. No sign of anything that might cause concern.
Click.
Eric, Marcus, and Maria all froze. Sam took a few more steps before realizing nobody was behind him.
Sam turned. “What?”
Eric didn’t answer.
