It was amazing how loud a hospital could be when Mike just wanted one to be quiet. A cart rattled past the open door, and a machine beeped steadily from somewhere nearby. Two nurses were having a conversation outside the door; apparently one of them had slept with a guy she was dating who then ghosted her.

Mike sat on the edge of the bed and stared at his phone. Sheriff Harper had left ten minutes ago. The conversation hadn’t gone well. The sheriff hadn’t looked at Mike like he’d lost his mind; hadn’t even challenged most of what Mike told him. Harper had simply asked questions again and again.

What did you see?

How far away were you?

When did you hit your head?

Could it have been a bear?

A person?

Had Mike taken any medication or consumed any alcohol?

If their positions had been reversed, Mike would have asked exactly the same things. He winced slightly from the pain in the back of his head. He hadn’t even realized he’d hit it during the attack, yet he had a mild concussion. Punching the thing had only served to hurt Mike. Other than that, he was mostly okay. He’d been lucky. Very lucky.

Picking up his phone, Mike checked his recent messages. Amber was the last person to text him. He’d spent most of his day thinking about their date. That all changed when that thing attacked. Now Mike wasn’t even sure what he was supposed to tell her. Before he could reconsider, Mike called her.

Amber answered on the third ring.

“Hello,” Amber’s soft voice answered.

“Hey,” Mike replied.

There was a brief pause before she continued. “What’s wrong?”

“What makes you think something’s wrong?”

“You don’t usually call this late,” Amber explained. “And you sound weird.”

“Maybe I just missed your voice,” Mike said teasingly.

“Well that was a load of bull,” she giggled.

“I do really like your voice,” he said quietly.

Another pause. “Where are you.”

“Hospital.”

“What? Are you okay?” she asked frantically.

“I’m okay,” Mike insisted.

“Mike, you just told me you’re at the hospital,” Amber said breathlessly.

“Emergency room, technically,” he mumbled.

“That doesn’t make it better!”

“I know,” Mike admitted.

“What happened?” Amber questioned.

“We were searching,” he began slowly. “We kept finding nothing, so I decided to expand the search. We took the long way to reach the base of the cliff. The one at the edge of the clearing.”

Amber was quiet for a few moments. “You never searched there?”

“No, we thought it was too out of the way,” Mike answered. “No animal should be able to climb down that sheer cliff, so there was no reason to.”

“O-okay,” she stammered.

“We found more blood,” he continued. “The dark blood. The nonhuman blood.”

“Mike,” Amber stated, fear in her voice.

“We followed the blood trail along the base of the cliff,” Mike told her calmly. “With the trees on the other side, the path was really narrow.”

“And?”

“I got separated from Eric and the others,” he admitted with a wince.

“Of course you did,” she sighed.

“It wasn’t intentional,” Mike insisted.

“That doesn’t make me feel better,” Amber stated firmly.

Mike smiled, touched by her concern. “We were thirty yards apart.”

“And now you’re calling me from a hospital,” she pointed out.

“Fair.”

“I’ll ask again; what the hell happened?” Amber’s voice cracked slightly.

He looked toward the open door before lowering his voice. “I heard the clicking. The sound Chloe described.”

“I remember,” Amber said quietly. “W-what made it?”

Mike stared at the floor, remembering Eric and Harper both asking that same question. He’d described a tall, thin body with long claws. He mentioned seeing what looked like antlers. While he had mostly told the truth, he did lie when he claimed to not have gotten a good look at it. Mike had seen it clearly, he just couldn’t believe what he saw was real.

“Mike?” Amber asked after almost a minute of silence.

“I-I don’t want to talk about that on the phone,” he eventually said. “It’s ... I’m still trying to process what I saw. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize,” she said. “Are you hurt?”

“Not badly.”

“What does ‘not badly’ mean?” Amber questioned.

“A few cuts and bruises. Mild concussion,” he answered.

“You have a concussion?!” she gasped.

“Just a little one...” he trailed off.

“Which hospital?” Amber immediately asked.

“You don’t need to come here.”

“Answer the question,” she urged.

“It’s late,” he protested weakly.

“I’m a big girl,” Amber countered.

“You really don’t have to-” Mike began.

“Mike,” her voice softened as she cut him off. “Do you want me to come?”

The answer came much faster than he expected. “Yeah.”

“Okay, I’ll be right there,” Amber promised. “Text me the address.”

“You really don’t have to,” Mike said.

“You just said you wanted me to,” she responded immediately.

“I know, but-”

“Are they keeping you overnight?” Amber interjected.

“No,” he told her. “The doctor said they’ll discharge me soon.”

“Are they letting a guy with a concussion drive home?” she questioned.

“No, and Eric drove me here,” Mike answered.

Amber made a small sound of satisfaction. “See? I’m already useful.”

“You’ve always been useful,” he replied.

“That was dangerously close to being sweet,” Amber commented.

“Head injury,” he said quickly.

“Right. Obviously,” she said. “I’ll be there soon.”

“Thanks, Amber.”

The call ended. Mike sent a text to Eric, letting the deputy know that he could head home. Then Mike simply sat there, the throbbing in his head his only company. Amber sent a text letting him know she was on her way. He was still smiling when a nurse appeared in the doorway.

“Mister Carter?” the nurse asked quietly.

“Yeah?”

“Your discharge paperwork should be ready shortly,” the nurse said. “The doctor wanted me to tell you it’s fine to sleep when you get home. In fact, you should. But you shouldn’t be alone tonight. Someone should stay with you and keep an eye on you. If the headache gets significantly worse, you start vomiting, become confused, have trouble waking, or anything else changes, you come straight back.”

“Okay, I will,” he nodded, thinking he’d be fine to be alone.

“Do you have someone who can drive you home?” the nurse wondered.

Mike looked at Amber’s text again. “Yeah, someone’s coming.”

10:12 PM

Amber found Mike sitting in a chair in the emergency room with a plastic bag at his feet and a folded packet of discharge instructions in his lap. She stopped the moment she saw him. Mike was dressed in casual clothes, his injuries obvious. His hands had a few bandages, and a bruise was starting to form along the left side of his face.

She gasped.

Mike lifted his head. “Before you say anything-”

“What the fuck?”

“Yeah, that’s fair,” he winced as he stood.

Amber crossed the waiting area quickly, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. She held him close, his warm body reassuring her that he was alright. Her hair was loose and she’d thrown on jeans and a purple top. She’d left her apartment within minutes of hanging up, needing to see him with her own eyes.

Taking a step back, she looked him up and down. “Any other injuries?”

“Bruises on my back and side. A few scrapes,” he answered.

Amber swallowed. “Can I see?”

“Not here.”

“Right,” she looked toward the exit. “Your place?”

“If you don’t mind driving me?” he asked.

“Of course not,” Amber smiled, crouching to grab the plastic bag before he could.

“I can carry that,” Mike protested weakly.

“You have bruises and a concussion,” she stated flatly. “I’m carrying the bag.”

“So bossy,” he smiled.

They made it through the automatic doors before Amber spoke. “You said you heard the clicking.”

“Yes,” Mike replied quietly.

“Then something attacked you,” she added as they walked through the parking lot.

“Yes.”

“What was it?” Amber asked nervously.

“I’ll tell you at the apartment,” he promised.

“Why can’t you tell me here?” she wondered.

Mike took a deep breath as he looked over at Amber. “Because I need you to see my face when I say it.”

Amber bit her lower lip and nodded. “Okay.”

10:41 PM

Mike stopped at the bottom of the stairs, a grim look on his face as he contemplated having to climb. His back hurt, his head hurt, his legs hurt.

Unfortunately, Amber noticed.

“Problem?” she asked.

“No,” he grumbled.

“Would you like me to carry you?” Amber offered.

Mike looked at her.

Amber managed to keep a straight face for about two seconds.

“Fuck you,” Mike sighed.

She laughed. “Tomorrow night, maybe.”

Mike stared at her.

Amber’s eyes widened. “I meant-”

“I know what you meant,” he smirked.

“I was making a joke,” she said quickly.

“Were you?”

“Yes,” Amber insisted as she blushed.

They made it upstairs, and Mike unlocked the door as he showed her inside. His apartment was pretty basic. Living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom. The furniture was comprised of items he’d accumulated over the years rather than bought as a set. A television was mounted across from the couch and there were books on the shelf. There was a framed photograph of his sister Rachel and her family. Another was of Mike and his sister’s two kids by a lake.

Amber walked farther inside. “It’s clean.”

“You sound surprised,” he commented as he shut the door.

“I’ve seen your truck,” she giggled.

“My truck is clean!” Mike protested.

“I looked in the back, Mike,” Amber smiled.

“Oh.”

“A few of those coffee cups looked old enough to qualify as an archaeological site,” she teased.

Mike gave her a look.

“See?” she grinned. “I can make archaeology jokes too.”

“I’m reconsidering letting you stay,” he froze when he realized what he’d said.

Amber set the bag on the kitchen counter. “I’m staying?”

“Uh...” Mike stammered. “I didn’t mean, you know...”

“The doctor said you shouldn’t be alone tonight, right?”

“Maybe,” he admitted.

“So yes,” she smirked.

“I can call someone,” Mike shrugged. “Eric, maybe.”

“Do you want to?”

Mike didn’t answer.

Amber folded her arms. “That’s what I thought.”

“You’ve been up all day,” he mumbled.

“So has Eric,” she reminded him. “And he’s been searching the wilderness. I’ve been looking at pictures of rocks.”

“Carved rocks,” Mike pointed out.

“Thank you,” Amber smiled in satisfaction. “Got any sweats I can change into? Maybe a new toothbrush?”
