Rayven and I were among the last to shuffle off Flight 57 at Albany International Airport. We were both tired. The process of transferring, organizing, and setting up the Rathmore Family Trust with a new administrator had been mentally grueling despite the near infinite patience and obvious competency of Reynolds and his team. Rayven especially had been out of her element. It was good to be getting off the plane.

I saw Duane standing in the concourse. He saw me right away and waved. He had thankfully brought Ella Rose. I saw Rayven smile when she saw her coven-sister. My companion trotted over to our coven-mates, her long chestnut hair swaying behind her, Rayven was wearing tights, a crop top, and a worn jean jacket. We both had carry on bags; our luggage had been magically teleported to our rooms in Nebelgutt. The Coven had plenty of cash but I was damned if the money-grubbing airlines were going to get more of it than they deserved.

Duane and I shook hands as the women hugged. “Welcome back Michael,” said Duane. “How was the flight?”

“Long and tedious,” I said. “It is good to be back in friendly territory.”

“Everything went well?

“Oh yeah Duane. We made a good choice. It was just overwhelming.”

“I’ve never seen so much paperwork in my life,” commented Rayven. She and Ella Rose were still side-hugging.

Duane promptly took Rayven’s carry on bag. “Well, lets get you guys to the car and you can start decompressing. The two coven-sisters followed us, eagerly chattering between themselves. Rayven and I were close but she needed her coven-sisters in a way I only partially understood. Despite their age, magical power, and sexual openness my coven-sisters were not that much different than any other group of twenty-something year old girls.

We had gotten into the Honda CR-X with Duane at the wheel and were out of the airport parking lot before serious discussion started. I was riding shotgun and the two girls were in the back.

“Question of the week Duane – how did things go with Delia?” I asked.

“Good! We sent her a follow-up text and she already responded saying that she is really eager to learn more. I think we have her. Coral does too but has a lot more insight into the girl than I do.”

“It’ll will be nice to have a new person,” added Ella Rose.

“And you and her can play all the time Duane,” said Rayven.

“Absolutely,” said Duane.

“That’s great news,” I said.

“We’ll almost have enough people for a band!” said Rayven.

“Yeah,” interjected Ella Rose. “One of us could sing backup or Michael could.”

“Michael doesn’t sing – “ I said.

“Or dance. I’ve see this mother try to dance. Nobody ever needs to see that shit again. You have like no rhythm at all,” said Duane.

“Hey!” I playfully exclaimed as the girls laughed.

“No rhythm. At. All,” repeated Duane.

“Lets see you try and fix a car shithead!” I said to Duane.

“I don’t have to. That’s why we have mechanics. You press a button and the car goes; that’s all there is to it,” responded Duane.

The car filled with our laughter. I realized that I needed my coven-mates too. By the time we were halfway to Nebelgutt I felt myself nodding off. Rayven had already fallen asleep in the back as Ella Rose scrolled on her phone. Things had gone well at Nebelgutt in my absence.

Rayven and I unpacked when we got home and both of us fell asleep quickly. To be honest it was nice to have a bed to myself that night.

The next morning I was in my office with Thriza’s ever-present coffee maker bubbling in the corner as I started running through my e-mails from the past several days and getting things organized when Coral and Duane stuck their heads in.

“Got a minute Michael?” asked Duane.

“Absolutely. I was going to pester you guys later today but this saves me the trouble. Duane said yesterday that things went well with Delia and she seems interested on her end. What else can you tell me Coral?”

The duo sat down and Coral got coffee for both herself and me. She began easily: “Things did go very well Michael. Delia is a sweet person and will make a great coven-sister. I think her knowledge of crystals will fit great with the Coven and that with training she will be a capable spellcaster.”

“Great,” I said. “I’m hearing a ‘but’ in there Coral.”

Coral glanced over at Duane. My eyes moved to him.

“Yeah ... well. Coral has sensed some problems, not with her joining or being a risk but with some parts of her personality.”

“Okay...?” I asked dubiously.

“She’s been through some trauma Michael. I can’t put a finger on it exactly but she has some challenges. She needs confidence in herself and she needs to understand herself.”

“Do you think she was abused or something?”

“No. Nothing like that. I think it’s something more subtle and hidden deeper. I’m not a psychologist but I was born on a Danish sugar plantation when people like me and Duane were treated like property: I know about pain. Delia doesn’t understand how beautiful she is both inside and out she needs confidence badly. Someone severely hurt her in the past.”

“Okay,” I said stroking my chin. “Duane you knew her before this. Can you offer any insight?”

“No,” said Duane. “It kind of surprised me, especially considering that she performs live music. I didn’t share the same kind of connection that Coral did given Delia’s fantasies but I got the same sense. It just wasn’t as strong.”

“Delia performs but always to small intimate crowds like in coffee shops and whatnot and she’s a solo act, she isn’t in a band like Duane,” said Coral.

“Good point. So it’s a different kid of performance, perhaps safer.” I said. “What would this mean for her training and the process of bringing her into the Coven?”

“I’m not sure,” said Coral. “I know that she will need extra support and TLC from us which we can give – our lifestyle is a big change for people. My concern is that we are all very busy right now. Do we have the time?”

“That’s a shitty way to put it,” commented Duane. “Coral is right though. I’m not attacking her, I’m agreeing with her.”

I took a deep drink of coffee and sighed. “What would be your recommendation here? You guys know Delia better than any of us. We desperately need new members and everyone won’t be as easy as Anna or Duane. That needs to be balanced with our own time concerns and I don’t want Nebelgutt to become a place for the damaged and dispossessed either.”

“That’s almost as crappy a way to put it as I did,” said Duane, looking down a bit.

“No, it’s real. We have to look at this from an organizational standpoint. The Coven is getting ready to take our game up a notch. I’m sure we can handle the real world easily; spell casters have been doing that for centuries, but our erstwhile cousins in the Cabal will come calling when we get noticed, I’m sure of that. Everyone will have to be 100% at that point.”

Duane and Coral looked at each other nervously. “You think there will be a conflict with the Cabal? We’re part of the Cabal aren’t we?” asked Coral.

“I see where you’re going with your line of reasoning Michael,” said Duane.

“Good,” I said. “We are not part of the Cabal Coral, we are ‘associated’ with the Cabal. My rank as adeptus is honorary. I haven’t gone through their rituals or training in Hermetic Magic; none of us have. We have access to some of their resources but I can hear the disdain many of them have for our type of magic in all my communications with them. When we start acting like a real Lodge there will be a reaction. I’m not sure what that reaction will be.”

“What about the woman Callistra you spoke to, the one who gave you the rank?” asked Coral.

“Callistra is an enigma. She appears to be sympathetic to us but if she is more than a thousand years old ... well, you can’t get that old without having some sort of agenda. She remains a contact at best right now. You guys are dodging the issue though. What is your recommendation with Delia.”

“She is worth it,” said Coral flatly. “I would love having her as a coven-sister. I say move forward.”

“I agree. We need new members and if we can help Delia in the process that’s a bonus,” added Duane.

“Very good,” I said. “Proceed with the plan. I suggest bringing in Rayven. She has been working on crystal magic with you Coral. I’m looking forward to meeting Delia.”

Coral smiled.

“Cool,” said Duane.

My two coven-mates left, eager to move forward with our newest potential member. After they left my mind drifted to Callistra, our enigmatic benefactor. I wondered, not for the first time, what her game was. I certainly didn’t know all the Grand Masters of the Cabal but she wasn’t one of them. She was in the Middle Circle and was old and quite powerful. Why was she not a Master or a Grand Master? Had she been sanctioned somehow by her own organization? What was her plan?

The next day, mid-morning Delia was sitting at the Green Crumbs coffee shop nervously looking out the window down the street. Her hair was tied up in a garish bandanna and she was wearing a plain brown colored ankle length sweater dress and brown boots. She clutched her coffee tightly with both hands and the crumbs of a bagel remained upon a small plate on her table. She felt her anxiety rise as Duane’s truck pulled to the curb behind her yellow car.

Delia waved to Duane and Coral as they entered the shop. They waved back and both got a cup of coffee before joining Delia. She hugged Coral before the girl sat down.

“Okay, so are you ready Delia?” asked Duane.

“I am,” she responded smiling broadly.

“What questions do you have?” asked Coral.

Delia looked down quickly. “I have lots.”

“Everything is on the table,” said Duane.

“So you guys all live at that old mansion? The ruined appearance is just a spell I’m guessing. If you’re a Coven does that mean there are thirteen members? Am I extra or a replacement? Would I live there too? If so I assume I can bring my guitar since Duane is there already and I know he still plays. I will need to bring Misty too –”

“Misty?” asked Duane.

Delia smiled. “Yeah, my cat Misty. She’s a tabby that has her claws but she is an inside cat. She likes just about everyone and does get along with other cats.”

Duane and Coral looked at each other.
