The laptop screen suddenly flickered with life and activity as I was digitally connected to Nebelgutt from the hotel in downtown Philadelphia. “Hey Duane,” I said happily. My friend’s image appeared in our Zoom meeting. He was joined a moment later by Coral who took a seat next to him. On my end Rayven sat down next to me a moment later.
“And Coral! Hey,” I continued.
“Michael, nice to see you and Rayven,” said Duane. “Can you hear us?”
“I can,” I responded.
“Hi Michael,” piped in Coral. “Hi Rayven.”
“Hey,” said Rayven. “It’s so nice to see your Coral.”
Are you holding it together down there girl?” asked Coral.
Rayven smiled. “As best I can. I’m just busy keeping Michael in line.”
“Come on, I’m sitting right here!” I said.
Rayven and Coral laughed.
“How’s the lawyer? Is he like a lawyer with an office in the trunk of his car or a lawyer on TV?” asked Duane.
“A little bit from column A and a little bit from B. I think all real lawyers are like that. Who else are we waiting for?”
“Sabrine and Franziska,” said Coral.
“Okay,” I said. “Let’s give them a few more minutes. I know how busy we all are.”
“I have never seen so much paperwork in my life,” commented Rayven. “It’s like these lawyers and finance people manufacture it.”
“I figured it would be like this,” I added.
Rayven continued: “The Four Seasons is spectacular though and their restaurant, Jean-Georges, has some of the best food I’ve ever had. Their desserts just melt in your mouth.”
“I would love it,” responded Coral flatly.
“Oh my God we would get so fat if we were here all the time,” said Rayven.
“Don’t care,” shot back Coral.
A second later with a digital flash Sabrine appeared in a box on the computer screen. “Sorry I’m late guys. I was finishing up the potions for Rayven and Ella Rose. Anna is bottling them up and sealing them.”
“All good Sabrine,” I said.
There was another blink on the screen. Franziska appeared. “I couldn’t get the link to work right away down here. Can you guys hear me?” she said.
“We can hear you Franziska,” I said. “No problem. Welcome everybody, I’m glad we could all make it and I know how busy we’ve been so lets go quick here. Ummm ... as for Rayven and I here in Philly everything has been going well. We’ve been taking care of transferring all the accounts and looking at investment strategies, and tomorrow we’re going to sign off on creating a foundation to be associated with our Trust so we can make donations properly.”
“I’d like to burn some of these damn papers,” said Rayven.
“Is everything on the up and up with this lawyer?” asked Franziska.
“Yeah,” I said. “Reynolds knows his shit and he knows the Cabal. I think this will be the best choice for us.”
“Good to know,” responded Franziska.
“We will be flying back to Albany not tomorrow but the day after ... in the morning. Duane ... I just sent you are flight info...”
“Okay,” said Duane. “Got it. It’ll be either me or Sabrine depending on how things go with Delia.”
“Which brings us to Delia. How is that operation going Duane and Coral?”
“We’ve got everything set up for tomorrow. I’ll be very involved but Coral is really in the lead here.”
Coral immediately jumped in: “I have everything ready to go. I am so hoping things go well with Delia. She has a sweet heart and doesn’t realize how beautiful she is inside and especially outside. She likes our boy Duane here but really fantasizes about being with another girl.”
“Oh my,” said Sabrine happily.
“Yeah,” said Coral. “She seems to have a solid concept of crystal magic but just needs to know ... the magic part I guess. I think that if she decides to join the Coven she will learn really quickly and she will make a sweet and supportive coven-sister for all of us. I used the four rose quartz that Rayven and I enchanted.”
“Excellent,” I said. “Duane ... don’t fuck this up.”
Duane smiled and saluted me on the computer screen.
“Moving on ... Franziska, how are we looking for rituals and potion orders coming up?”
“Three rituals are on the schedule – one really long one – I don’t really need to get into specifics on what they are for here. I also forwarded four potion requests to you Sabrine, two Eros, one Vulcan, and one Marsyas.”
On screen Sabrine hung her head and mumbled something before looking back at the camera and throwing her hair back with a not so subtle hand motion. “Two love, a craft, and a music for gods sake,” she said.
“Hold it together Sabrine,” I said. “Its rough, I get it. You’ll be off rituals and we can split Anna between rituals and helping you. When Rayven and I return we can both hit the ground running.”
“Help is coming Sabrine,” added Rayven.
“I know, I know,” said Sabrine. “It’s not that. I got an email from Shelia Foster yesterday that was pretty interesting.”
“Oh boy,” I said.
“She has run into an interesting little issue down in New York City. They have found some rats drained of blood with human bite marks down there, probably a human female. It’s not a criminal thing yet but it’s on their radar.”
“There’s a vampire running around NYC killing rats?” asked Duane rhetorically. “Six months ago that would’ve freaked me out a little, now, not so much.”
“What do we know about vampires?” asked Sabrine.
“Not much – I have some basic knowledge. Vampires exist, they are potentially part of the Cabal, and most of what is ‘commonly’ known about vampires is not true. The Cabal has deliberately spread misinformation about them for centuries,” said Franziska.
“And now popular culture does that for them,” commented Rayven.
“Let’s slow down here a little people,” I said. “This is NYC we’re talking about, not Albany. I know for a fact that the Cabal has multiple lodges in NYC and in New England. This sounds like a Cabal problem, not a Coven of the Moonlit Grove problem. We shouldn’t take on problems that aren’t ours at this point. I also don’t think we should step on the toes of our hermetic spell casting cousins.”
“What should I tell Shelia? We do kind of owe the Albany PD,” asked Sabrine.
“Owe is a strong word Sabrine,” I said. “I think of it like a partnership at this point. Franziska pull all the vampire information you have. I’ll go through the Cabal info that I have. Sabrine, tell Shelia to stand by, it didn’t sound like she was in crisis mode anyway.”
“Correct,” answered Sabrine.
“When I get back, you can answer her with what we want to offer but loop me in at that point.”
“Sounds good Michael,” answered Sabrine. “I’m sorry ... I shouldn’t let the workload get to me.”
“It’s okay Sabrine. One of the things we have to remember is to take care of ourselves when we are this busy. That could be my footrubs –”
“I believe there is a waiting list for you now Michael,” commented Coral.
I laughed a bit. “Or Duane’s cookout, or just relaxing and getting a bit ‘white girl drunk’ one night –”
“Say what?” blurted Duane.
The whole group laughed.
“Okay,” I said. “On that note lets all get back to our stuff. Coral, Duane, good luck with Delia. Let me know how it goes ASAP.”
“Will do Michael!” said Coral. One by one the meeting participants faded away.
A little more than a day later an early spring darkness was rapidly falling across the swampy forests near Nebelgutt as Duane’s truck rumbled down the rutted road outside the estate. The road he was on had been a morass of mud several days ago. Now it was mostly frozen. Delia’s bright yellow Corolla was behind him, handling the rough road with much less ease than the truck.
Duane stopped and waited for the car to rumble up behind him. He shut off the truck and got out. He was wearing simple jeans, sneakers, and a fairly heavy hoodie to ward off the cold. He turned toward the car behind his truck.
Delia climbed out of the car. She was wearing a puffy blue coat, a pair of dark blue tights that hugged her figure, and some practical boots. The girl was mildly annoyed at being lead so far from town but was not overly concerned, having driven herself.
“What are we doing so far out Duane?” she asked. “I thought we were headed out to your place to play together?”
Duane smiled slightly. “Well I do live nearby. I said I lived pretty far out from town.”
“We’re way out by that old haunted mansion,” continued Delia, running her hand through her mass of fuzzy brownish hair.
“Nebelgutt,” said Duane.
“Yeah,” responded Delia, slowly approaching Duane. “Or did you just want to get me alone out in then wilderness.” She put her hands around his neck.
Duane just smiled and allowed his hands to engulf her waist. Delia was all of 5’2” and stood in contrast to Duane’s 6’1” size. He looked down at her smiling face.
“That’s not a hundred percent untrue Delia,” said Duane. “What if I told you some interesting things? Are you open minded enough to at least entertain them?”
“What interesting things?” purred Delia.
“What if I told you that I was a witch, or a warlock in my case, and that I lived in a haunted mansion with my fellow coven-sisters and a coven-brother?”
“Ahhh...” said Delia.
“What if I told you that we were sexual witches, using physical intimacy to increase the power of our magic? What if I told you that magic was real and has been hidden for centuries by people like me and my coven-sisters?”
“I would be like: ‘Damn, Duane you are way to cute to be crazy’,” said Delia.
Duane smiled slightly. “Remember Delia, you are with a pair of friends who are concerned about you first and foremost. If anything we do makes you uncomfortable all you have to say is stop and we will release you immediately.”
“I ... understand...” stammered Delia weakly as she looked up at Duane. Behind the tall dark-skinned drummer the sky was suddenly full of storm clouds and lightning.
A second later Delia found herself is a warm chamber. A shallow pool was in front of her, it’s warm steamy water beckoning with comfort. Four glowing rose quartz were mounted on narrow silver pedestals at the corners of the pool. They provided a thin, almost magical light and something else – Delia could sense their potency in a way she never had before. Her vision focused upon one of the mystic stones. She could see the intricate runes carved into the crystal’s surface.
Delia could see nothing beyond the pinkish light. She felt the warmth from the pool and a slight chill on her back. It wasn’t painful, it was more a temperature that was designed to force one into the warm waters.
