“Okay. Okay. I’ll push it a bit forward and zoom in on section 144,” said Shelia Foster. The forensic scientist was at her home with a laptop, sitting at her kitchen table. Detective Mark Kronig and Justin Duke of the Albany police department were sitting behind her. “And ... right there. I’ll play it at half speed.”
“That damn cinder block wall blocks almost the whole view. We could see easier if it wasn’t there,” commented Justin Duke.
“If that wall wasn’t there the NYPD would have their perp already,” observed his partner.
Justin Duke grunted in agreement.
The trio were watching the dash-cam footage from a NYPD squad car taken in upper Manhattan. It had been provided by Dr. Jacob Yarland in a purely unofficial basis, which is why Shelia was using her own personal computer and they were at her kitchen table instead of her office.
“Right there,” said Shelia. She stopped the playback. The footage showed a scene of carnage in a shimmering monotone. The area was partially blocked and the images were very blurry. “I’ll zoom in right here.” Shelia’s fingers clattered on the keyboard.
The image obeyed her command. The screen zoomed in on what looked like a human face, it’s sides framed with long hair. The eyes were glowing in the darkness and the mouth was open. The lower part of the image was dark with what seemed like blood.
“Damn,” said Mark.
“Can you clean that up?” asked Justin.
“I don’t have the right software,” said Shelia flatly. “Remember this is 100% unofficial. Jacob said they had ran it through enhancement.”
“What the hell are you?” asked Justin rhetorically, looking at the screen.
“From this vantage point I would judge the figure to be 5’2” to 5’6” and less than 125 lbs. It’s probably a human female,” said Shelia. “Jacob also gave me some stills from the crime scene.” Shelia handed her colleagues a half dozen photos. Mark shook his head and Justin softly whistled.
“Pretty ugly, aren’t they?” said Shelia.
“This poor guy was torn apart,” commented Justin.
“The victim is Ronsheen Tarrik. He has ... had a sheet, mostly small time stuff. He did some time for assault about two years ago,” said Shelia.
“In any case the guy didn’t deserve this,” said Mark.
“I would agree,” said Shelia. “Let me play the rest of the video – keep in mind that Jacob’s office is keeping this under wraps as best they can.”
Shelia let the video play. The figure darted away in front of the camera, throwing up a burst of what had to be blood and bone. The person disappeared behind the wall completely and could be seen next in one corner of the frame heading up the wall of a building.
“Whoa!” said Mark. “That isn’t right.”
“Jesus,” muttered Justin.
Shelia flipped off the video. “I’m taking into consideration that Jacob showed me some rats a couple weeks ago that had been drained of blood down in NYC that had human bite wounds on them.”
“There’s a fucking vampire stalking the streets of New York City?” blurted Justin. “That’s what we’re talking about guys.”
“Ease down partner, you’re jumping the gun here,” commented Mark.
“No, I’m not!” exclaimed Justin. “We killed a demon with a mess of witches. You remember that right?”
Mark rubbed his face. He suddenly felt tired.
“Let’s keep perspective,” said Shelia. “This is in New York City, it’s not here. I know that Jacob is advocating for my official help because of the John Doe Killer case –”
“The demon. The case where we killed the demon,” interrupted Justin.
“The point is we have to be prepared for a aid request from the NYPD. The John Doe Killer case means that other agencies are going to look at Albany, particularly the two of you, as experts on weird cases,” said Shelia.
“And I assume you’ve already contacted our Coven friends regarding this?” asked Mark.
“Yeah, in fact I have a conference scheduled in about twenty minutes with Sabrine. That’s another reason I asked you guys over here. I want you listening in a least.”
“Here we go again,” commented Justin.
“Possibly,” said Shelia. “I’m just gathering background information at this point. I’ve been waiting for Sabrine to get back with me. She had to do some research first.”
“And check with Michael I’m sure,” said Mark. “He’s pretty smart. I’m sure we will get a carefully curated amount of information; that’s what I would do if I was in his spot.”
“I haven’t shown them this footage. I’m not planning on sharing it at this point,” commented Shelia.
“That’s a good decision,” said Mark. “I trust our friends in the Coven but only to a certain extent. They have a pretty big secret to protect and we have an obligation to enforce the law. Those two things can easily run counter to each other.”
“Makes sense,” commented Justin. “We also have to take what they say with a grain of salt.”
“Right,” responded Mark. “Don’t underestimate Michael either. He’s intelligent and he’s a natural leader – that’s why he easily transitioned into running his group. When I was overseas I was in intelligence, not combat, but I met lots of combat officers. The good ones cared about their troops: their needs, their morale, and their health. Natural leaders order their troops to do dangerous things and they are obeyed, not just because of discipline and conditioning, but because their subordinates want to obey and trust their leader. Michael is like that.”
“Interesting assessment,” commented Shelia. A second later her computer flashed with life as Sabrine entered their meeting lobby.
As Shelia, Mark, and Justin discussed my leadership qualifications I was deep within the underground parts of Nebelgutt enjoying myself. I had completed all the prep work for the 1927 Minerva. I had secured the 5,954 cc inline six cylinder inline engine to a heavy duty engine stand and was watching as the fluids drained out of the motor into some deep pans.
I had prepared labeled bags, blue storage bins, and markers to group bolts together with their parts. Once the fluids were drained I was planning on taking a series of pictures from every angle for my records and, frankly, to refer to when I messed up. The next phase would be removing any external bolt-ons and accessories, though many things wouldn’t be on an engine this old.
I was quite happy as I rubbed the oil and dirt off my hands.
“Michael! Michael!” I heard Franziska call across the garage area. I ignored her. She approached me. “Did you leave your phone upstairs?” our quarter-mistress asked a bit angrily.
“No,” I said. “I’m just ignoring it.”
“We have a conference with the Albany PD right now, remember? Coven business. Vampires. You’re the leader.”
I sighed and rolled my eyes. “Shit, I forgot. Sorry. I’ll be right up.”
“I’ll wait while you clean up,” said Franziska.
I scowled at the girl and finished wiping off my hands and cleaned them in the garage sink. I looked back at the waiting engine wistfully before dutifully following Franziska upstairs. Sabrine was casually chatting with Shelia Foster as I entered the conference room with Franziska. The two women got along well and seemed to think in similar patterns. Sabrine and Shelia had become the main connection between the Coven and the Albany PD.
“Here he is,” said Sabrine.
“Sorry Sabrine. Sorry Shelia – I forgot. I was downstairs working on an engine and lost track of time.”
“No problem, it happens,” said Shelia, smiling. “I’m here with Detectives Mark and Justin.”
“Okay, sure,” I said. “Hi guys. Franziska is here with us as well. To get us started I really wanted to say that this is happening in New York City, well outside of everybody’s area of concern. There are three Cabal Lodges in New York City and one in Boston.”
“Got it,” answered Shelia. “My concern is that with the John Doe Killer case last winter we might get asked to assist toe NYPD.”
“Sure. Sabrine ... vampires...”
“Yeah,” began Sabrine. “To start with they are real and almost everything that is commonly known about vampires is false. The Cabal has been spreading disinformation about vampires for centuries and now Hollywood pretty much does that for them. Vampires are not indestructible, they do not change form into bats or wolves, have no hypnotic powers, and don’t sleep in coffins. They do need blood to survive though.”
“What if you staked one through the heart?” asked Shelia.
Sabrine smiled slightly. “I would imagine they would have a reaction like you or I would.”
“They would die,” commented Shelia.
“I would assume so.” Sabrine continued: “Vampires are not immortal either. They do have a lifespan longer than the average human though.”
“What about the sunlight thing?” asked Shelia.
“My research shows they are extremely sensitive to sunlight and it might severely burn them but not necessarily kill them. I think the same thing might be true with garlic,” said Sabrine.
“So garlic or a chemical in garlic might be an allergy, and the sunlight sensitivity sounds like a severe form of Erythropoietic Protoporphyria,” said Shelia.
“Erythro – what?” I asked.
“It’s a rare inherited metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme ferrochelatase, leading to painful photosensitivity, high protoporphyrin levels, and potential liver complications. My guess would be vampirism is a very similar type of condition, perhaps transmitted somehow rather than having a purely genetic component. The appetite for blood could be making up for some deficiency caused by the disorder; probably related to the liver,” said Shelia.
“That seems logical. I couldn’t find any meaningful record of a vampire being afraid of a holy symbol or religious icon either,” added Sabrine.
“Which would make sense if it is a disease,” said Shelia, rubbing her chin. “What did you find out about their physical abilities?”
“Not much,” said Sabrine. “It seems like our cousins in the Cabal don’t want all their secrets out in the open.”
“If a victim of this disorder needed blood they might have superior strength, speed and senses just for the purposes of hunting,” commented Shelia.
“Which might match up with the history I found,” I said, taking over from Sabrine.
“The Cabal knows about vampires; apparently they had a series of wars with a group called the Pavane des Vampires. These conflicts occurred before the Roman Empire in the area of Gaul, which we call France, but famously flared up in the Middle Ages. The Cabal won and, being pragmatic, they integrated the Pavane into their ranks using their Lodge structure. There are vampires in the Cabal. I don’t know how they are organized, what their abilities are, or how many there are. I would guess there are Lodges made up almost exclusively of vampires but the Cabal just doesn’t share info,” I said.
Shelia nodded and rubbed her chin. “I thought you guys were part of the Cabal?”
“We are associated with the Cabal. The Coven of the Moonlit Grove isn’t a fully functioning Lodge. Most Cabalists think we are a gang of sexual deviants. I got ghosted on most of my inquiries.”
“Hmmm,” said Shelia. “Has there ever been a vampire member of your Coven?”
Franziska shook her head and jumped into the conversation. “No, not in living memory. Rayven and Ella Rose, our the oldest members don’t recall any vampires. I’m not sure how the appetite of a vampire would work in a sexual situation. The two seem pretty incompatible to me.”
I nodded in agreement. “That’s really all we have Shelia. I wish I had more info for you.”
“Same here,” said Shelia with a tight smile. “What you did provide is useful. Thank you.”
“The last thing I would say is just be careful with this. You guys know a lot more than the Cabal would like. I know you have the power of law enforcement backing you up but the Cabal has the power to laugh in the face of any police force around. The Cabal likes their secrets. They will kill to keep them.”
Shelia nodded gravely. “Thanks again guys,” she said before leaving the meeting. The computer flicked off.
“What do you think ladies?” I asked my coven-sisters.
“I talk to Shelia almost weekly. They have more info. She’s good at hiding it but they have more,” said Sabrine.
“I figured that,” I replied. “I didn’t tell them I notified the Breath of Amaunet Lodge in New York City either. The Lodge politely confirmed the receipt of the message – I did my Cabalistic duty.”
“This is a New York City problem anyway,” commented Franziska. “We don’t have the manpower to concern ourselves with this. Delia is doing great in the classroom and Duane is just about ready for ritual work but we are still undermanned.”
“Yeah,” I said. “Duane is going to be ready just in time to be gone most of June.”
“You can’t fault the man for going on a small venue tour with his band,” said Sabrine.
“Oh yeah, I’m not throwing him under the bus at all but we’re going to be thin this summer with Anna, Rayven, and Ella Rose in Europe for three weeks too.”
“Their potions are done. The plane and hotel reservations are in place. We’re set for Phase One of introducing ourselves to the world. Well, kind of introducing ourselves anyway,” said Sabrine.
“We’ll get through it Franziska,” I said. She nodded and shrugged.
Later that night I was sitting in my room playing a thrilling game of Civilization and prosecuting a war against my hated foes the Portuguese and there was a knock at my door. I kept playing and simply yelled: “Come on in.”
I sensed someone enter. “Got it!” I exclaimed as Lisbon fell to a combination of artillery bombardment and modern armor.
“Ah Michael,” said Rayven.
“It’s like he doesn’t even understand,” added Sabrine.
I turned to face my coven-sisters. “Sorry girls. I got involved in a kill or be killed war with Portugal. I – oh my.”
Rayven’s shapely form was covered in lingerie: a strappy corset-type babydoll top of black velvet with a flouncy bottom and a center of embroidered red velvet. She had on black panties, black fingerless gloves, and a strange back piece of wispy material, almost like a Victorian bustle without the heavy dress. She had on black stockings and laced up platform boots.
Her lips were a deep crimson and matched her nails. She wore a heavy black necklace of a dozen small stones. Her deep auburn hair hung long and hid whatever earrings Rayven wore. She looked very Victorian.
Sabrine was dressed very similar in dark lingerie. Her hair was lighter than Rayven’s but was just as long. She was wearing a choker rather than a necklace and platform heels instead of boots. The velvety embroidering of her outfit was blue rather than the red that Rayven wore. Otherwise my two coven-sisters were dressed almost identically.
They both smiled at me devilishly.
“Ah ... yeah. Hi girls. Is there ... yeah...” I stammered.
Rayven waved her hand. “Turn off the computer or I will.”
“Yeah!” I answered quickly. “Game time is over.”
“Lose the shorts and get on the bed Michael,” ordered Sabrine.
“Absolutely,” I said as I obeyed. “You guys aren’t going to hurt me or nothing?”
“There might be some chafing,” said Rayven, looking at Sabrine and smiling.
Sabrine smiled back at her coven-sister. “We’re just really horny. This won’t hurt ... well maybe a little.”
