Late afternoon settled over Honolulu in a wash of honey-colored light.
Neither Ryan nor Madison seemed eager to leave the bed, but they had reservations and a sunset cruise waiting for them. Eventually they made their way into the bathroom, still teasing each other and moving with the comfortable familiarity that had developed over the past few days. The shower filled the room with steam. They washed each other’s hair and shoulders, trading affectionate touches and occasional kisses beneath the warm water. It was no longer awkward or tentative between them. Their intimacy had become something they could enjoy without overthinking—a language made up of glances, laughter, and small gestures.
Madison rested her forehead against Ryan’s shoulder. “I like this,” she said quietly.
“The shower?”
She shook her head. “Us.”
Ryan wrapped his arms around her. “Me too.”
They dressed for the evening. Ryan chose khaki shorts, a crisp button-down shirt, and sandals. Madison wore a light wrap skirt and an elegant blouse, leaving her long black hair loose over her shoulders.
When they stepped outside, Honolulu was glowing. The trade winds carried the scent of flowers and salt through the streets. Palm trees swayed overhead, and the late sunlight turned the buildings along Waikīkī golden. Their ride to Kewalo Harbor took them along the coast.
Madison kept looking toward the ocean. “Every time I think I’ve gotten used to that view,” she said, “it gets better.”
Ryan glanced at her. “You’re going to be impossible when we go home.”
“I already know.”
At the harbor, they boarded the catamaran. The white sails caught the wind, and the boat eased away from shore. Honolulu slowly receded behind them as the Pacific opened in every direction.
Madison stood at the railing. Ryan came up behind her and slipped his arms around her waist. She leaned back against him. Neither spoke for a while. The wind moved through her hair. The water flashed silver beneath the lowering sun. Somewhere on the boat, someone laughed, and a crew member pointed toward the horizon where a group of seabirds skimmed the waves.
Madison rested her hands over Ryan’s. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt this peaceful.”
Ryan kissed her temple. “Me neither.”
As the catamaran sailed farther from shore, Diamond Head became a dark silhouette against the brilliant sky. The sun began its descent. Gold became orange. Orange became pink. And then the clouds caught fire with shades of coral and lavender.
Madison turned to Ryan, her face illuminated by the sunset. “Remember this.”
“I will.”
“No. Really remember it.”
He looked at her. “I will.”
She smiled. The moment felt strangely important—not because anything dramatic was happening, but because nothing was. They were simply standing together in the middle of the Pacific, watching the sun disappear over an island that had already begun to feel like part of their story.
When the catamaran returned to Kewalo Harbor, neither wanted the evening to end. They headed back toward The Royal Hawaiian and went directly to Azure Restaurant. Their table overlooked the ocean. The restaurant seemed to glow in the evening light, and the sound of waves provided a constant backdrop to the conversation.
Their first courses arrived, accompanied by cocktails and wine. They tried the local flavors slowly, talking about the day’s adventures between bites.
Madison closed her eyes after tasting one dish. “Oh, that’s good.”
Ryan laughed. “You say that about everything here.”
“Because everything here is good.”
The next course arrived with fresh seafood and tropical flavors that reminded them how completely different Hawaii felt from home. They shared bites across the table, occasionally feeding each other just to make the other laugh. Their conversation wandered from food to the cruise, from the cruise to the hike, and eventually to what they would do when they returned home. Neither was eager to discuss that last part.
Madison reached across the table. “I don’t want this trip to be over.”
Ryan took her hand. “It isn’t over yet.”
She smiled.
The final course arrived as darkness settled over the island. Beyond the restaurant, the ocean reflected scattered lights from the shoreline. The warm breeze carried the fragrance of flowers through the open-air dining area.
Madison looked out toward the water. “I think this is my favorite dinner we’ve ever had.”
Ryan smiled. “Because of the food?”
She shook her head. “Because of everything.”
He understood. The meal wasn’t special because of the dishes or the setting alone. It was special because they were sitting there together, relaxed and unhurried, with nowhere else they needed to be.
By the time they returned to their suite, Honolulu glittered beyond the balcony. Madison slipped the door shut behind them, the soft click echoing in the quiet suite. Her nipples pressed insistently against the silk of her blouse, each breath sending a sharp pulse through her chest. Ryan’s erection strained against the fabric of his shorts, a thick, hot outline that made her mouth water. She turned to him, fingers already tugging at the tie of her wrap skirt, the fabric loosening with a soft sigh.
“I want to try something else tonight,” she murmured, voice low and tinged with excitement. “The book showed a picture where the woman faces away. Reverse cowgirl.”
