ABE
At the RV, Abbie took my belongings and climbed the little stairs. She opened the door and called in, “Don’t mind me, I’m just leaving some things inside here.”
In seconds, she was back out with me and Mateo. I was hesitant, but Mateo asked her directly.
“What did you see?”
“The four of them were all in the back squeezed into...”
“Each other?”
“Yes, Mateo,” Abbie said patiently. “They were having sex, but I meant that the bed inside is snug for two and ridiculous for four.”
I told him, “Dude, you’re asking too many questions. Abbie’s not going to give you an entire erotic story based on a few seconds’ view. How many times does 17 go into 561?”
Abbie looked at me like I’d gone crazy. But I knew Mateo was an engineering student like me and the problem would distract him.
He thought for about 30 seconds, then gave me the answer.
“It’s 33, Abe. Why do you ask?”
“I wanted to distract you from your prurient interests, Mateo.”
“Oh ... Thanks, Abe.”
Abbie said, “Guess I learned a new word, then. I think we should go out to the beach now and enjoy South Padre Island in all of its, uh, ‘atmosphere.’ Plus, I feel like swimming. Please tell me you two can swim, even in the surf. OK?”
Mateo and I agreed, and we started walking. Through all of this, Abbie still had her bag with her sunscreen, so I knew I would not be mistaken for a lobster.
At the beach, I noticed the normally placid Gulf was really thumping. Then I recalled the reason: a hurricane out near Jamaica and Cuba. I noticed, compared to yesterday, the water was less crowded. The larger waves might knock you off your feet.
An enterprising man was renting out “bellyboards,” each about 3 feet long. He had an easel showing how the bellyboards were used for prone surfing. We managed to snag some of the last ones before he ran out.
We watched the surf line for a while to get the hang of it. Evidently, you waited around behind the surf until a candidate swell appeared. Then you paddled furiously to keep aligned with the swell until it became a curling wave. You rode the wave as long as you could until it petered out, then you went back out to wait for the next good swell.
We had an amazing time. Abbie intuited when a better swell arrived; I quickly found that following her example was the best choice. Even when we spilled and hit into the sand, the impacts were tolerable.
A couple of hours after we started bellyboarding, we were interrupted. We saw a young woman crash awkwardly and come up looking helpless. Her board drifted away, and I swam after it.
Mateo and Abbie were closer to the woman. Mateo picked her up and carried her in his arms out to the dry sand. Abbie took Mateo’s board, and I returned with the woman’s board.
All three of us looked down at her face. Quickly, she opened her eyes and took in the three faces surrounding her. Mateo did the talking.
