ABBIE
Dad pulled the RV into the designated spot and plugged in the power so our air conditioner could run as often as necessary. Mom presented me with her swimwear choice, and I just burst out laughing. It revealed a lot more than I expected.
I struggled to properly arrange the flimsy fabric. Then she sent me away with a bag containing water, lip stuff, a bottle of sunscreen, and instructions to not come back until sundown.
I was surprised to come across several beach volleyball nets all in active use. I played a lot of volleyball back in high school so I was excited to join a game. Half the men on the beach seemed far more interested in my bikini than the volleyball. They hoped my top would come loose because I was jumping up and down a lot to spike the ball.
Eventually, I got tired, and my boobs started to hurt. So I went looking for some lunch and found a grill that was serving hot dogs, potato salad, soft drinks, and beer. Lots of beer. I guess the brewery sponsored the food as a promotion or something.
In line with me was this gorgeous guy. He was tall, had a muscular body, a hot little butt, and when I tapped his shoulder he showed me those insane blue-gray eyes. I almost gasped, and for a moment forgot why I tapped. Then I remembered.
“Your shoulders are getting red. Can I put some sunscreen on you? I’m Abbie.”
“Abe. Of course. Let’s get our food and I’ll kneel down in front of you.”
I’m sure my heart skipped a beat after that “kneeling” word hit. Now I had a name to go with that handsome face of yours.
After we ate, after the kneeling, and after you put your hand over mine and said ten minutes of smearing sunscreen was enough, that’s when we really started to have a conversation.
I’m going to skip ahead a little because I think you remember some of our afternoon.
We talked for hours—about school, your engineering classes, my worries about staying in pre-law, your family, mine. It felt easy. What you might not remember so clearly is how many of those beers you drank. You were getting silly and loopy. I enjoyed watching that, but I should have realized there was a problem brewing. If you’ll forgive the pun.
Suddenly, you stood up, unsteadily. I realized green wasn’t your natural complexion, and I hauled you into the surf in just enough time to watch you barf in amazing amounts.
And they say romance is dead.
By the time you were exhausted, the whole front of your shirt was destroyed. I took it off and made sure you were cleaned off with seawater. I left the shirt in one of the trash barrels and escorted you back to our RV to meet my parents.
I said, “Mom and Dad, this is my new friend Abe. You’re not seeing him at his best. I’m going to put him out in the tent, and I’m going to stay out there with him to make sure he’s OK tonight.”
By that point you were, I guess, stuporous. Abe, you didn’t seem to register that my parents were naked. So, I got you laid out in this tent so you could rest and recover, and we’ve been together in the tent ever since.
“Abbie? Oh, hell, it IS Abbie, right?”
