ABBIE
“Beth, I want you to picture yourself differently. Let’s call her ‘Liz.’ Liz is strong, confident, and self-assured. Show that in your posture: keep your shoulders back, walk purposefully, and keep your feet wide apart.”
“My feet?”
“That will roll your hips as you walk; men are attracted by that motion.”
I watched Beth try on being Liz. She tried a few steps, checked herself, and then walk further with the rolling, swaying gait I suggested. A little smile showed she was getting the idea.
I continued, “That’s right, and keep your shoulders back. You’re proud of them; don’t be slouching. I’m going to introduce and describe you as Liz, and your main job is to smile and look interested. OK, the list is posture, purposeful, feet apart, and smile. Most important: confident, assured, and smiling. Let’s practice on Abe, ready?”
“I guess so?”
“That’s a bad start. You’re Liz, you’re confident and slightly horny. We’ll try again.”
“Hello. I’m Abbie, this is my buddy Liz. What’s your name?”
“Abe, at your service. What can I do for you lovely ladies?”
“We’re looking for single guys to join us for lunch. Liz is fresh out of boyfriends and hopes to find ... Are you hungry? Want to join us?”
“I’d love to, but my girlfriend would be upset. She might forgive me once she sees your ... sorry.”
“That’s too bad, Abe. You’re awfully cute.”
“OK, good. Come with me, Liz; we’ll go looking for studs. Abe, while we’re gone, you should put together some sandwiches.”
“Sure. Happy hunting, ladies.”
We went off together, picking a direction at random. As we walked, I reminded Liz to keep her posture and smile. We approached a group with three men and two women. I repeated the line I used with Abe.
“I might be your man, I’m a third, or fifth wheel here. I’m Drew, and I’m sad and lonely while these four are tied closely together. You ladies are college students?”
We had a few moments of light conversation, and then I asked Liz.
“What do you think?”
Liz pretended uncertainty, then winked at me. Playing a Roman empress, she stuck her arm out with her thumb sideways, then smiled and turned it up. Then she walked over and hugged him, and Drew laughed, happily. She wasn’t playing a role, she was taking initiative.
I told Drew, “You have the good news. The bad news is we need to find another couple of guys for Liz, because she’s a little scarred inside by the last guy and she’s being careful.”
Drew said, “That man was an idiot, we can agree. Me? I’m gentle as a lamb, unless somebody is mean to Liz. Then I’m a tiger.”
“Good answer,” I said. “Will you come with us?”
“Sure. Lead on.”
We found another eager guy, Kent, using the same procedure, and then we had some trouble. There was a guy on his own—except for a cooler full of Mexican beer. He didn’t wait for us to approach him.
“Hey, baby! Want to ditch these fools and hang with a real man?” To emphasize his case, he belched loudly. Liz looked at me, and I scowled. I gave her credit: she turned and confronted the drunk decisively, without hesitating.
“You... Wait. My face is up here. C’mon, you can do it. You are too drunk and slovenly.”
He belched again. Closer, his bloodshot eyes were obvious. He started to object, but then he noticed Kent and Drew bristling on each side of Liz.
“Forget it, bitch. Take your big tits and go away.”
He staggered back and sat on his cooler, and we continued down the beach.
Liz said, “Thanks, guys. I’m going to kiss each of you when we get back.”
Further down the beach, we had a pleasant “interview” with Dan, and our posse was complete. On our way back, the drunk guy was snoring loudly.
I told the group, “We’re going to meet my boyfriend, Abe. When we met here, he drank too much of the free beer and ended up barfing in the ocean. The difference was, he got funny instead of angry. Then I took care of him overnight, and presto! We were a couple.”
Kent grumbled. “Getting drunk didn’t work for me. You’re special, and he’s lucky.”
I said, “I will say that was an unusual first date. But he’s an unusual guy. Trust me, Liz is not expecting the same thing.”
