My eyes drifted away from the display of mint-green silicone massagers and landed directly on a heavy, black velvet curtain tucked into the far back corner of the store. Above the metal frame hung a yellowing plastic sign with bold red lettering that read: VIDEO ARCADE.
I nudged Steve’s elbow with mine. “Steve ... what’s behind that curtain?”
Steve looked up from a rack of gag gifts, his usual Midwestern hesitation kicking in. “Oh. Yeah, that’s ... that’s not Pac-Man, Trish. That’s the back-room booths.”
I pulled my reading glasses out of my purse, slipped them onto my nose, and peered intently at the curtain, a sudden spike of mischievous curiosity replacing my initial awkwardness. “Wait, like ... individual booths? People go in there?”
“Yep. Put a few quarters or a token in, watch a video,” Steve said, trying to sound like a man of the world, though I could see his neck turning a faint shade of pink. “Usually truck drivers or guys passing through.”
“Trish, take those off, you look like a teacher on a field trip,” Steve whispered, reaching over to gently slide my glasses back down my nose. “And I don’t know, maybe? I hear breathing ... or maybe that’s just the hum of the vending machine.”
A soft, muffled moan echoed faintly from behind the black fabric, followed by the metallic clinking sound of coins dropping into a slot.
I gasped, slapping a hand over my mouth to smother a sudden, giggly burst of laughter. The sheer absurdity of the situation hit me full force. A sharp, mischievous thrill washed through me, completely sweeping away my usual restraint. I wanted to push Steve out of his comfort zone—I wanted to see how far we could take this.
“Steve,” I whispered, letting a playful, dangerous sweetness slip into my voice. “Go look.”
“What? No!” Steve hissed, stepping back and shaking his head vehemently. “Trish, absolutely not. We are not going back there.”
“I didn’t say we. I said you,” I said, leaning in and planting my hands on my hips. “You’re the brave salesman who brought us across state lines for an ‘adventure,’ right? Go peek through the curtain and tell me what’s happening.”
“Trish, come on,” Steve pleaded, glancing nervously back toward the front counter. “It’s creepy! It’s dirty! What if some guy in sweatpants comes out?”
“Then you better be fast,” I whispered, giving his shoulder a firm, unyielding nudge. “Go on! Just a little peek. Or are you chicken?”
“I am a forty-eight-year-old man, I am not ‘chicken’—”
“Bawk, bawk,” I teased, suppressing a wicked little giggle behind my hand. “Five seconds. Just peek your head around the velvet and report back. If you don’t, I’m buying the brightest neon-orange thing in this glass case and making you pay for it at the register.”
Steve stared at me, looking utterly stunned. “Fine,” he muttered, adjusting his collar like a man marching toward a firing squad. “Five seconds. You owe me big time for this, Patricia.”
He took three cautious steps toward the back wall, but before he could reach out, I grabbed his forearm. My grip was surprisingly firm, and I dragged him right along with me toward the heavy black fabric.
“Oh no, you don’t,” I whispered, my heart racing with wicked delight. “We’re in this together, Mr. Salesman. We’re going together.”
“Trish, wait—no, hold on!” Steve hissed, his boots slipping slightly on the slick linoleum as he tried to anchor his nearly two-hundred-pound frame against my pull. “You can’t be serious! We are not both going into the smut maze!”
“Shh! Keep your voice down or the kid at the counter is going to look over,” I giggled, feeling a burning flush rise up my cheeks.
I didn’t give him a chance to argue further. Reaching out with my free hand, I pushed aside the heavy velvet curtain, pulling a deeply reluctant, red-faced Steve into the dim, narrow hallway behind it.
The light instantly plunged into a dingy red glow. The air was noticeably warmer back here, smelling of heavy industrial carpet cleaner and cheap cologne. Down the long hallway was a line of small, painted-plywood doors, each with a red lightbulb glowing above it and a heavy-duty coin slot set into the frame.
From somewhere down the hall, a rhythmic, muffled thumping sound echoed out, accompanied by the distinct, static-laced moan of a video soundtrack starting up.
Steve froze, his back pressed up against the fake wood paneled wall. “Trish, I am forty-eight years old and I have never felt more like I’m about to get arrested in my entire life.”
I pointed toward a rusted, heavy metal machine mounted on the wall. A faded label printed on masking tape read: TOKENS - $1.00 EACH.
“I’m doing it,” I whispered, my voice practically vibrating with excitement.
Before Steve could protest, I pulled a crisp dollar bill from my purse and fed it into the machine. It gave a loud, metallic clunk-whir, and a single heavy brass token dropped into the metal tray with a resounding CLINK.
“Trish!” Steve gasped, ducking his head instinctively. “You’re going to get us thrown out!”
“Shh! Live a little,” I giggled, snatching up the token and grabbing his hand.
I dragged him down the red-lit hallway to the first booth with an unlit bulb—Booth 3. I pushed the thin plywood door open, pulled Steve inside, and shut the door behind us.
The booth was tiny—barely four feet by four feet. It smelled intensely of bleach and cheap pine disinfectant. There was a single, slick vinyl bench, a small CRT monitor built into the wall behind thick plexiglass, and a coin box with a glowing red slot.
We were packed in shoulder-to-shoulder. Steve’s broad frame filled up half the booth, his back pressed against the wall, while I was pressed against his chest.
“Okay,” I whispered, looking right up into his wide, panicked eyes. “Put it in.”
Steve took the heavy token from me, his fingers brushing mine, and slid it into the metal slot.
CLINK.
The monitor buzzed to life with a loud pop of static, casting a bright blue-and-pink glow over the tiny room. A heavy bassline blared through a small overhead speaker, followed by loud, aggressively dramatic groaning from the screen.
I gasped, clapping both hands over my mouth as my eyes went wide behind my glasses. I let out a snort of laughter, pressing my face right into Steve’s chest to muffle the sound. Steve burst out laughing too, wrapping his arms around my waist as we stood crammed together in the tiny, absurd room.
“Steve,” I wheezed against his shirt, my shoulders shaking, “this is terrible!”
“I told you!” Steve laughed, looking down at me. “You wanted the full experience!”
My laughter slowly died down as my eyes adjusted to the flickers of light. That was when I caught sight of something circular cut directly into the spray-painted plywood wall right at hip height.
I leaned closer, nudging Steve with my elbow. “Steve ... look.”
Steve glanced down. “What? The bench?”
“No. There.” I pointed a finger at a clean, round hole, about three inches in diameter, sawed roughly into the partition wall.
Steve stared at it for a second before his eyes widened. “Oh. Oh. Trish, don’t look at that.”
“Is that...?” I whispered, my jaw dropping. I turned my head toward the opposite wall, and sure enough, there was a matching hole cut into the paneling on that side, too.
“Yes, it’s a glory hole,” Steve said quickly, grabbing my shoulders to pull me back. “We are leaving. Right now.”
“Wait!” I gasped, a mix of shock and dark hilarity washing over me.
Driven by a sudden, reckless wave of curiosity, I ducked down, put my hands on my knees, and peered right through the cutout on the left wall.
“Trish, no!” Steve choked out in a panicked whisper, grabbing at my sweater.
Through the rough-cut circle, I got a clear view into the adjacent booth. Sitting on the vinyl bench was a guy in a faded flannel shirt, totally absorbed in his own movie, his hand moving in a steady, practiced rhythm.
My eyes went huge. I snapped my head back, slamming my back against Steve’s chest, my cheeks burning hot red as a series of muffled, hysterical snorts escaped my lips.
“What did you see?!” Steve hissed into my hair. “I told you not to look!”
“He’s ... he’s really ... jerking off!!” I gasped out.
I couldn’t stop myself. Spinning around in the cramped space, I bent low and peeked straight into the hole on the other wall.
The flickering blue screen in the next booth illuminated the scene. Down on her knees on the stained floor was a woman, her head bobbing enthusiastically sucking on a cock on the vinyl bench.
My breath caught in my throat. Seeing that raw, explicit sight just inches away sent a heavy, throbbing warmth blooming deep in my stomach. It was dirty, crude, and utterly intoxicating.
I slowly stood up, my breath hitching in my throat. The flickering light washed over my flushed face. The initial humor was completely gone, replaced by a dark, intense heat I had never felt before.
I stepped right into Steve’s chest, slamming my hands against his polo shirt.
“Steve,” I whispered, my voice raspy and tight. “What ... what was that?”
Steve froze, his hands catching me by the waist. “Trish, I told you, we’re getting out of here—”
“No, look at me,” I demanded, pulling him down until our noses were practically touching. “Is that ... is that what happens in these places? People just ... go in there and do that?”
“Yes! I mean, I guess so!” Steve stammered, his heart pounding against his ribs.
“Have you ever done that?” I cut him off, searching his face. “Have you ever sat in one of these booths and had someone...?”
“God, no, Trish! Never!” Steve gasped.
I slid my hands up his chest to the back of his neck, digging my fingers into his hair, pulling him closer until I could feel his fast, shallow breathing against my skin.
