A pastor his daughter and the hypocrisy

Zero minutes to five minutes

Max stirred in his seat as the sunlight filtered through the window, casting warm rays across his face. The Brown Hound bus was slowing down, its engine rumbling softly. Next to him, Lily shifted, nestled beside him in their reclining chairs. Her soft, furred petite body was wrapped in his arm, her head resting on his shoulder and one leg drawn up along his belly. As she blinked awake, her eyes fluttered open. She looked up at Max, her lips curling into a smile.

“Good morning,” Lily said, her voice still a bit sleepy.

Max glanced down at her and smirked. “Good morning, pretty bunny. Did you sleep well?” he asked, his gruff voice holding a note of warmth. Lily’s smile widened, a soft giggle escaping her as she basked in the compliment.

Before their conversation could continue, the bus driver’s voice crackled over the intercom. “We’re fifteen minutes away from our next stop. Please prepare yourselves, set your seats upright and be ready for a forty five-minute layover.”

Max sighed and both he and Lily adjusted their chairs back into the upright position. Through the window, they could see the city slowly coming into view, the landscape changing from barren desert to scattered buildings. Around them, the other passengers on the bus began to stir, following the driver’s instructions.

As the bus pulled into the station, the driver’s voice came on again. “If this is your stop, thank you for riding with Brown Hound. For those continuing on, you have a forty five-minute layover. Everyone must leave the bus during this time, so please take any overhead luggage with you. We’ll be cleaning the bus.”

Lily stood up, reaching for the hanging strap of her pink backpack from the overhead compartment. Max followed, grabbing his black gym bag. Slinging the bag over his shoulder, he turned to Lily and said, “Let’s freshen up. I’ll meet you back out here.”

“Okay, that sounds good to me,” she replied, stifling a yawn. They exited the bus together, stepping into the station. Max and Lily went their separate ways into the restrooms. A few minutes later, both reappeared, looking refreshed as they reunited in the station’s small, bustling lobby.

The smell of food caught Max’s attention and he nodded toward the small diner in the corner. “Let’s order breakfast,” he suggested. Lily nodded eagerly, following him to the counter.

Max glanced at her as they approached the female fox cashier. “What do you want, little lady?”

Lily thought for a moment before answering, “Waffles with syrup.” Max nodded with acknowledgment, then turned to the cashier. “We’ll take waffles with syrup for her and eggs and bacon for me.”

He paid and carried their trays to a corner booth, settling in across from one another. Lily eagerly dug into her breakfast, her ears twitching with delight. Max leaned back, watching her with a small, satisfied grin, his plate untouched for the moment.

Max glanced down at his watch, trying to keep track of the time. “Did you sleep well?” he asked, looking back up at Lily as they sat in the corner booth of the small diner.

Lily nodded, her ears perking up as she took another bite of her waffles. “Yeah, I did. I was pretty comfortable. You?”

Max smiled. “Same here. Not bad for a long bus ride.”

They continued with small talk, Lily being her usual chatty self. She pointed out little details in the station, commenting on the décor, the people walking by and even the smell of fresh coffee coming from behind the counter. Max listened, nodding as she talked, but his mind wandered back to his watch. Something felt off.

He glanced down at it again. The second hand seemed to be dragging slower than it should. He frowned, tapping the face of the watch as if that would somehow reset it.

“Lily, take out your tablet,” he said, interrupting her. “I’m curious about something.”

“Okay,” Lily said, her voice bright and curious. She reached down, rummaging through her pink backpack before pulling out the tablet. “What are you curious about?”

Max leaned in. “Check the time on your tablet. Does it match my watch?”

Lily stared at the tablet’s screen for a moment. “Um ... nothing’s really moving on it.” She held it out for Max to see and sure enough, the digital time display wasn’t changing.

Max’s brows furrowed in confusion. He raised his wrist and held his watch next to the tablet. “Look,” he said, showing Lily. “It’s the same time, but my watch is moving ... just really slow.”

They both looked up at the clock on the station wall. The hands on that clock were moving normally.

“This is strange,” Max muttered. Lily nodded in agreement but didn’t seem too concerned. She put the tablet back in her backpack and they returned to eating their breakfast, Max still puzzled by the oddity.

As they finished eating, Max wiped his mouth and looked over at the bus. “Let me check with the bus driver,” he said, standing up. “I want to make sure we don’t miss the departure.”

Lily followed him as they approached the Brown Hound bus, where the driver stood in front of the door, looking out over the station. Max walked up to him. “Excuse me, Mr. Driver,” he said politely. “How much time do we have left until we need to get back on the coach?”

The driver didn’t respond. He just stood there, staring blankly ahead, as if he hadn’t heard a word. Max frowned, thinking the driver was just ignoring him. “Excuse me,” he said again, a little louder this time. Still no reaction.

Max reached out to tap the driver on the arm, hoping to get his attention, but when his hand made contact, it went straight through the driver. He recoiled, eyes wide. “What the?”

Lily, watching from behind, gasped. “Max ... did your hand just go through him?”

“I think so,” Max replied, his voice low and filled with disbelief. He reached out again, this time more cautiously. His hand passed through the driver’s arm once more as if the man were made of air. The driver remained still, staring ahead, oblivious to Lily and Max.

Lily stepped up beside Max and reached out to touch the side of the coach. “my hand Is going through the bus, too,” she announced.

Max and Lily stepped back, staring at each other in disbelief. “Are we losing our minds?” Lily whispered, her wide eyes reflecting her growing panic.

Max looked around, spotting a tiger man walking past. He called out, “Hey, excuse me! Can you see the bus I’m standing in front of?”

The tiger stopped and glanced at him, clearly confused. “What are you talking about, wolf? There’s no bus in front of you.” He shook his head, looking irritated. “I’ve got no time for this. I need to catch my bus.” And with that, he hurried off.

Lily approached an older mouse woman nearby and asked the same question. The mouse smiled at her gently, patting her arm. “Oh, sweetie, no. There’s nothing over there.” She spoke to Lily in a patronizing tone, thinking perhaps she was confused, then walked past.

Lily walked back to Max, her brow furrowed in concern. “They can’t see the bus, Max. What’s going on here? I know we’re not crazy.”

Max was about to answer when Lily suddenly felt a buzzing sensation in her backpack. “Wait ... my tablet,” she said, quickly taking off her bag and pulling it out. The screen flickered and a message appeared: “Thank you for riding Brown Hound. You have a forty five-minute layover. The world you’re about to step into, once you leave the station, does not move like the Time you’re used to. For every five minutes on your device in that world, a full day will pass. Please make the best of your time. A hotel room has been set up in your name: Max and Lily.”

Lily’s eyes widened as she showed the message to Max. He stared at the screen, his jaw clenched. “What is this?” he asked, his voice tight with confusion. “This is strange.”

“Yeah,” Lily agreed, her voice trembling slightly. “I didn’t know Brown Hound paid for hotel rooms ... and what’s with this whole time thing? It sounds like some kind of science fiction movie.”

Max shook his head, feeling uneasy. “I don’t know, but we need to figure this out.”

Max and Lily stood in front of the Brown Hound station, frustration building as they both tried and failed to open the door. Max tugged harder, the door refusing to budge. “What’s going on here?” he muttered, his voice thick with confusion. He stepped back and nodded for Lily to try.

Lily grabbed the handle and pulled with all her might, but the door didn’t move. She gave up with a huff. “Max, this is really weird,” she said, her wide eyes reflecting his unease.

Just then, they noticed a horseman approaching from inside the station. “Step back,” Max said quietly. “When he comes out, maybe we can grab the door.” The horse pushed the door open and stepped outside. Max lunged forward to catch it, but his hand passed straight through the handle like it wasn’t even there.

“What the “ Max pulled his hand back, staring at it in disbelief. “This is just like the bus driver ... we can’t effect anything.” He turned to Lily, who was just as stunned.

“Max,” she whispered, her voice tight with fear, “what’s happening to us?”

Max sighed, his mind racing. “Give me your tablet again,” he said. Lily pulled it from her backpack and handed it over. He read the message once more. “Nine days. Apparently, Brown Hound booked us a hotel,” he muttered, his brow furrowed.
