Amara woke before the light settled properly into the room.

Her skin felt strange.

Her throat ached where the night had left its memory on her, and the necklace at her neck seemed heavier than gold should ever feel.

For a long moment she just lay there staring at the ceiling, listening to the hush of the house and the distant sounds of Lagos beginning to stir outside.

A generator coughed somewhere in the distance.

A danfo horn cut through the morning.

Life was moving on as if nothing had happened.

She sat up slowly and caught sight of herself in the mirror across the room.

The marks on her neck were impossible to ignore.

She touched them with the tips of her fingers and looked away at once.

Shame came first, sharp and immediate.

Then something colder followed.

Something in her went still.

Not peace.

Just that small, hard quiet that comes when a person realizes they are on their own.

By the time she reached the dining room, Chidinma was already seated with the ease of someone who belonged to every room she entered.

She was dressed beautifully, her voice light, her smile warm enough to fool anyone who did not know better.

She greeted Amara as though they had shared an ordinary evening, as though the night had not taken something from her and left a mark behind.

“Sit down,” Chidinma said, gently.

Amara obeyed.

Breakfast arrived on fine plates.

Eggs.

Toast.

Fruit arranged neatly.

Tea steaming in a cup that felt too delicate for the kind of day this was becoming.

Chidinma watched her eat with a quiet, steady attention that made Amara’s nerves tighten.

Then Chidinma reached into a drawer and brought out her old phone.

Amara’s chest tightened at once.

“This thing is old now,” Chidinma said, turning it over in her hand.

“Too old. It will not do.”

That phone had been hers before this house.

It had her mother’s messages, old numbers, the small thread of a life outside these walls.

Chidinma dropped it into the waste bin as if it were nothing.

Then she placed a sleek new phone on the table in its place.

“Use this one,” she said.

“I have already set it up for you.”

Amara stared at the new device and understood what it meant even before she picked it up.

The old phone had been a door.

This one was a lock.

Later, Chidinma took her shopping.

The city glittered around them.

Glass and gold and polished floors.

Everything too bright and too expensive.

Attendants smiled too quickly when Chidinma entered.

They spoke in soft voices, like they could sense who had power in the room.

The air inside the boutique was cold enough to sting, but Amara still felt sweat gathering beneath her clothes.

Chidinma moved from rack to rack with the certainty of a woman choosing ornaments for a display.

She held up dress after dress until she found one she liked.

Short.

Tight.

The kind of thing that left no room for comfort and even less for argument.

“Try it on,” she said.

Amara hesitated.

Chidinma did not raise her voice.

She did not need to.

The softness in her tone was worse.

“Wear what I choose,” she said.

Amara took the dress into the fitting room with numb hands.

When she came out, she did not feel like herself.

The dress clung to her body and exposed her in a way she did not know how to name.

Chidinma looked at her the way a buyer looks at something expensive and finally found.

Amara hated the approval in that gaze.

Hated that it made her skin prickle anyway.

When they left the boutique, Chidinma walked beside her with one hand resting lightly at the small of her back, a touch so casual no one else would have thought twice about it.

But Amara felt it like a collar.

That evening Chidinma took her to dinner with people whose lives seemed built entirely from money, access, and appetite.

Women with polished nails and glittering smiles.

Men who laughed too loudly and leaned too close when they spoke.

The room was full of expensive perfume, soft music, and the sound of people enjoying themselves while pretending not to notice what was happening around them.

Chidinma introduced Amara with a voice full of pity.

“This is my niece. She lost her mother.”

The sympathy that followed was effortless and empty.

Hands touched Amara’s shoulder.

Faces softened.

Voices lowered.

Nobody asked the right questions.

Nobody looked close enough to see the fear hiding behind her smile.

They only saw what Chidinma wanted them to see.

One of the women leaned in and said, “You are very lucky to have family who take care of you.”

Amara almost laughed at that.

Instead she lowered her eyes and said, “Yes, ma.”

At the long dining table, Amara sat beside Chidinma, legs pressed together under the tight dress.

The conversation moved from one thing to another.

Property.

Parties.

Politics.

Someone’s daughter in London.

Someone else’s husband and his foolishness.
