Monday mornings at Kingsley Mansion always followed the same routine.
The staff woke before sunrise.
The chefs prepared breakfast.
The gardeners trimmed the hedges surrounding the estate.
The chauffeurs polished the luxury cars until they gleamed beneath the early morning light.
For three years, there had been one thing that never changed.
Vivian was always the first member of the Kingsley family awake.
She would prepare Adrian’s breakfast, remind him of his schedule, and watch him leave before quietly beginning another lonely day.
Today...
Everything was different.
The alarm on the bedside table rang at six-thirty.
Vivian reached over and turned it off before sitting upright.
Sunlight streamed through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the spacious bedroom.
For a few seconds, she remained still, taking a deep breath.
Today was her first day at work.
Not as Adrian Kingsley’s wife.
But as Vivian Hart, an interior designer.
She climbed out of bed and walked toward the wardrobe. Instead of reaching for one of the expensive dresses Adrian’s assistant had bought over the years, she chose a neatly pressed beige blouse, a black pencil skirt, and a fitted cream blazer.
Professional.
Simple.
Elegant.
She tied her chestnut hair into a low ponytail and applied only light makeup.
Looking into the mirror, she barely recognized the woman staring back at her.
Not because she looked different...
But because there was something in her eyes she hadn’t seen in years.
Purpose.
A knock came at the bedroom door.
“Madam?” Mrs. Eleanor’s gentle voice called.
“May I come in?”
“Please.”
The older woman entered carrying a garment bag.
When she saw Vivian dressed for work, her face brightened.
“You look wonderful.”
Vivian smiled.
“I hope I don’t look too nervous.”
“You do.”
Mrs. Eleanor laughed softly.
“But that’s only because today matters.”
She carefully straightened Vivian’s blazer before stepping back to admire her.
“You remind me of the young woman who used to arrive home from university carrying sketchbooks every afternoon.”
Vivian chuckled.
“I still have those sketchbooks.”
“I know.”
Mrs. Eleanor smiled knowingly.
“I dust them every week.”
The two women laughed together.
It was a light, genuine moment.
One Vivian hadn’t experienced in a long time.
Mrs. Eleanor’s expression softened.
“I’m proud of you.”
Vivian blinked.
“Proud?”
“It takes courage to begin again.”
For a moment, Vivian couldn’t find the words.
She simply nodded.
“Thank you.”
Downstairs, breakfast had already been served.
Adrian sat at the dining table reading reports on his tablet while occasionally answering emails on his phone.
His coffee had grown cold.
He didn’t seem to notice.
Ethan’s voice came through the phone.
“The Henderson contract has been revised, sir.”
“Move the meeting to ten.”
“Very well.”
“And ask Sophia to prepare the presentation.”
“I’ll let her know.”
The call ended.
Adrian continued reading without looking up.
A few moments later, Vivian entered the dining room.
She paused.
Normally, she would have greeted him immediately before pouring his coffee.
Instead...
She quietly walked to the opposite side of the table and served herself breakfast.
Adrian noticed the movement from the corner of his eye.
He looked up briefly.
“Morning.”
“Good morning.”
His eyes lingered on her outfit for a second.
“You’re dressed differently.”
Vivian looked down at her blazer.
“I am.”
He nodded once.
“It suits you.”
“Thank you.”
That was the end of the conversation.
Mrs. Eleanor stood near the kitchen entrance, silently observing.
She waited for Adrian to ask where Vivian was going.
He didn’t.
She waited for him to notice the portfolio resting beside Vivian’s chair.
He didn’t.
She waited for him to remember today.
He couldn’t.
After finishing breakfast, Adrian stood.
“I’m leaving.”
Vivian also rose to her feet.
“So am I.”
He picked up his briefcase.
“I’ll be home late.”
“I understand.”
He gave a brief nod before walking toward the front door.
Within seconds, the sound of his car faded into the distance.
Mrs. Eleanor sighed quietly.
“He didn’t ask.”
Vivian smiled gently.
“I didn’t expect him to.”
The words carried no bitterness.
Only acceptance.
She picked up her portfolio.
“Wish me luck.”
Mrs. Eleanor’s face lit up.
“Good luck, Madam.”
“No...”
She corrected herself with a proud smile.
“Good luck, Miss Vivian Hart.”
For the first time in years...
Hearing her own name spoken like that made Vivian’s heart skip.
She wasn’t offended by being called Mrs. Kingsley.
But today...
She wanted to remember who she had been before becoming someone’s wife.
Forty minutes later...
The taxi stopped in front of a modern six-story building with large glass windows.
A silver sign stood beside the entrance.
L&B Interior Studio
Vivian stepped out, clutching her portfolio a little tighter.
She looked up at the building.
Her stomach fluttered with nerves.
She had attended interviews before.
Design competitions.
University presentations.
Yet somehow...
This felt more intimidating.
Because this wasn’t just a new job.
It was a new beginning.
The automatic doors slid open.
Inside, the reception area was bright and welcoming. Samples of fabric, wood, lighting fixtures, and furniture were displayed throughout the showroom.
Employees moved around carrying design boards and laptops.
The atmosphere buzzed with creativity.
“Vivian!”
Lena hurried across the lobby with a broad smile.
“I’m so happy you’re here.”
She wrapped Vivian in a quick hug before introducing her to the receptionist.
“This is the designer I told everyone about.”
Vivian laughed nervously.
“Please don’t raise everyone’s expectations too much.”
“Oh, I absolutely will.”
Lena winked.
“Now come on.”
“There’s someone I want you to meet.”
Vivian followed her deeper into the studio.
She had no idea...
That walking through those doors was the first step toward becoming the woman Adrian would one day fight desperately to win.
Lena led Vivian through the open-concept studio, where every corner reflected creativity.
