Morning sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Kingsley Mansion, painting streaks of gold across the polished marble floor. The rain from the previous night had disappeared, leaving behind a cloudless sky. To anyone looking from outside, the mansion looked like the perfect home for the city’s most powerful couple.

Only those living inside knew it was nothing more than a beautiful prison.

Vivian Hart stood in the spacious kitchen wearing a simple cream-colored dress and a white apron tied around her waist. Her long chestnut hair was pinned into a loose bun, with a few strands escaping around her face. She wasn’t dressed like the wife of a billionaire CEO.

She never cared about appearances.

She cared about people.

Steam rose from the pot of mushroom soup as she tasted it before adding a small pinch of salt.

Mrs. Eleanor smiled as she watched from nearby.

“You always insist on cooking his breakfast yourself.”

Vivian smiled faintly.

“It became a habit.”

“But you have chefs.”

“I know.”

“Then why do you still do it?”

Vivian lowered the spoon.

“My mother used to tell me that food made with love always tastes different.”

Mrs. Eleanor’s smile faded.

She knew Vivian wasn’t talking about her adoptive mother.

She was talking about the elderly woman who had worked as a caretaker in the orphanage where Vivian had spent the first eight years of her life.

The woman who had taught her that kindness cost nothing.

The woman who had passed away long before Vivian entered the Hart family.

“You still remember her?” Eleanor asked softly.

“Every day.”

Vivian stirred the soup again.

“She was the first person who ever called me family.”

The older woman looked away, pretending to arrange the dishes so Vivian wouldn’t notice the tears forming in her eyes.

It amazed her.

After everything Vivian had endured...

She still chose kindness.

Minutes later, breakfast was ready.

Fresh toast.

Scrambled eggs.

Mushroom soup.

Black coffee without sugar.

Every item had been prepared exactly the way Adrian liked it.

Vivian carried the tray herself into the dining room.

The antique grandfather clock chimed eight.

Right on time.

She heard footsteps descending the staircase.

Adrian Kingsley appeared, already dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit. His black tie rested neatly against his crisp white shirt. His expensive watch gleamed under the morning light as he adjusted the cuff of his sleeve.

He looked every bit like the CEO who dominated magazine covers.

Cold.

Untouchable.

Powerful.

His eyes briefly met Vivian’s.

“Morning.”

“Good morning.”

Her voice was warm.

His was merely polite.

She pulled out his chair.

“Breakfast is ready.”

Adrian sat without another word.

His attention remained on the tablet in his hand as he scanned financial reports.

Vivian quietly poured coffee into his cup.

“You have a board meeting at ten.”

He looked up for the first time.

“You remembered.”

She smiled.

“You mentioned it last week.”

Adrian gave a small nod before returning to the screen.

To him, it was ordinary.

To Vivian...

Those three words felt like a reward.

She had become so accustomed to surviving on tiny moments of acknowledgment that even the smallest gesture made her heart flutter.

Mrs. Eleanor watched from the hallway.

She sighed silently.

No marriage should look like this.

A wife celebrating because her husband noticed she remembered his schedule.

After several minutes, Adrian finally set his tablet aside.

“The soup is good.”

Vivian’s face brightened.

“I’m glad.”

“I changed the recipe.”

He nodded once.

Then silence settled between them again.

Vivian looked at the empty chair across the table.

Three years ago she imagined breakfasts filled with laughter.

Arguments over newspapers.

Conversations about future children.

Instead...

The silence had become another member of their marriage.

It never missed breakfast.

Suddenly Adrian’s phone buzzed against the table.

The screen lit up.

Sophia Bennett.

Vivian’s fingers froze around her coffee cup.

Adrian answered immediately.

“Sophia.”

His voice softened.

Only slightly.

But Vivian noticed.

She always noticed.

“Good morning,” Sophia laughed from the other end.

“I hope I didn’t wake you.”

“I’m already having breakfast.”

“Oh? That’s unusual.”

“I’ll be leaving soon.”

“I just wanted to remind you about lunch.”

“I remember.”

“And don’t forget we’re meeting the Japanese investors tonight.”

“I won’t.”

“See you later.”

“See you.”

The call ended.

Vivian lowered her eyes.

“Lunch?”

Adrian folded his napkin.

“Business.”

She nodded.

“And dinner too?”

“The investors requested it.”

Another nod.

She forced herself to smile.

“I hope everything goes well.”

“It will.”

He stood from the table.

“I’m leaving.”

“So soon?”

“My schedule is full.”

She wanted to ask...

When will you come home?

Instead she simply said,

“Drive safely.”

He picked up his briefcase.

As he walked past her, he paused.

Without looking back, he said,

“Thank you for breakfast.”

Then he walked away.

The front door closed.

The sound echoed throughout the mansion.

Vivian remained standing where she was.

Mrs. Eleanor slowly approached.

“Madam...”

Vivian smiled.

“I’m alright.”

But the smile never reached her eyes.

Outside the mansion gates...

A sleek silver sports car was already waiting.

Sophia Bennett stepped out, wearing an elegant white pantsuit that perfectly matched the confidence in her stride.

As Adrian approached, she smiled brightly.

“There you are.”

Without hesitation...

She reached out and straightened his tie.

From the second-floor bedroom window...

Vivian saw everything.

She stood frozen.

Her hand slowly tightened around the curtain.

For three years...

She had never adjusted Adrian’s tie before work.

Not because she didn’t want to.

Because he had never allowed her close enough.

Yet another woman did it so naturally...

As though she belonged there.

Vivian’s heart sank.

She whispered to herself,

“ ... Maybe I never stood a chance.”

Vivian remained motionless behind the curtain long after Adrian’s car disappeared through the mansion gates.

She hadn’t imagined it.

Sophia Bennett had adjusted his tie with an ease that spoke of familiarity. Adrian hadn’t stepped back. He hadn’t stopped her. He had simply stood there as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

Vivian slowly released the curtain.

Her fingers trembled.

“Maybe...” she whispered to herself. “I’m just overthinking.”
