The house was unusually quiet.

Vivian pushed open the front door and stepped inside.

For years, she had called this place home.

Tonight...

It felt like a hotel she had checked into by mistake.

She slipped off her heels and walked upstairs without turning on the lights.

Every step echoed through the empty hallway.

Inside the master bedroom, she placed her handbag on the bed before sitting down.

The silence wrapped around her.

She closed her eyes.

Memories flooded in.

The nights she waited for Adrian to come home.

The dinners that grew cold.

The birthdays he forgot.

The conversations that never happened.

The mornings she convinced herself things would get better.

And today...

The one day she needed him the most...

He had chosen caution instead of trust.

A tear slid down her cheek.

She quickly wiped it away.

“No...”

“No more crying.”

She whispered it to herself like a promise.

Nearly an hour later...

The front door opened downstairs.

Adrian walked in.

His jacket hung over one arm.

His expression was heavier than usual.

He looked toward the staircase.

“Vivian?”

No answer.

He loosened his tie and climbed the stairs.

The bedroom door was half-open.

Vivian stood by the window, looking out into the night.

She didn’t turn around.

“I’ve been looking for you,” Adrian said quietly.

“I know.”

“I went back to the office.”

She nodded once.

“I heard.”

He stepped closer.

“The investigators are already reviewing everything.”

Still...

She said nothing.

Adrian frowned.

“Vivian...”

“When this is over...”

She interrupted him without turning around.

“It won’t change anything.”

He froze.

“What do you mean?”

She finally faced him.

Her eyes were calm.

Too calm.

“I spent years believing that if I loved you enough...”

“ ... one day you’d choose me.”

She smiled sadly.

“I was wrong.”

Adrian felt something tighten in his chest.

“You’re misunderstanding what happened.”

“Am I?”

“You know I don’t believe you stole that design.”

Vivian looked at him quietly.

“Then why couldn’t you say that?”

He opened his mouth.

No words came.

Because he didn’t know.

He had wanted to be fair.

Professional.

Logical.

But he hadn’t realized that his silence would hurt more than an accusation.

Vivian gave a small nod.

“I understand now.”

“You do?”

“I understand that I can’t keep expecting something you’re unable to give.”

The room fell silent.

Neither of them moved.

Finally, Adrian spoke again.

“I’ll make this right.”

Vivian smiled faintly.

“You can’t.”

Her answer was gentle.

But it carried the weight of every disappointment she had buried over the years.

She walked past him toward the walk-in closet.

As she reached the doorway, she paused.

Without looking back, she said,

“You should get some rest.”

Then she disappeared inside.

Adrian stood alone in the bedroom.

For the first time...

He wasn’t afraid of losing an argument.

He was afraid...

He was losing his wife.

The night passed in complete silence.

Adrian barely slept.
