The atmosphere inside L&B Interior Studio was unusually tense.
Every designer kept glancing toward the conference room, pretending to work while secretly waiting for the same phone call.
Today was the day.
The hotel chain would announce which design firm had won the renovation contract.
Chris tapped his pen impatiently against the desk.
“If they don’t call in the next ten minutes, I’m going to lose my mind.”
Daniel chuckled without looking up from his computer.
“You’ve been saying that every ten minutes since eight this morning.”
“I’m serious this time.”
“You were serious the last six times too.”
The office erupted into laughter.
Vivian smiled, though her hands remained tightly wrapped around the coffee mug in front of her.
She tried to appear calm.
She wasn’t.
This project meant more to her than anyone realized.
It wasn’t just another contract.
It was proof that she hadn’t wasted the talent she’d buried for three years.
Lena walked out of her office, carrying her phone.
The room instantly fell silent.
She looked around at everyone before a slow smile spread across her face.
“We got it.”
For a heartbeat...
No one reacted.
Then Chris shot to his feet.
“You’re joking!”
“I’m not.”
The entire studio exploded with cheers.
Daniel high-fived Chris.
Mia hugged Lena.
Someone clapped so loudly that the receptionist poked her head through the door to see what had happened.
Lena walked straight toward Vivian.
“This project belongs to you.”
Vivian blinked rapidly.
“My design?”
“The client specifically requested that you lead the renovation.”
For several seconds, Vivian couldn’t speak.
Her eyes burned.
Not with sadness.
With relief.
She had done it.
After years of believing she had lost herself...
She had finally accomplished something that belonged entirely to her.
Lena hugged her warmly.
“I’m proud of you.”
The words broke the last of Vivian’s composure.
She laughed through the tears gathering in her eyes.
“Thank you ... for giving me this chance.”
“You earned it.”
Chris clapped his hands together.
“That’s it.”
“We’re celebrating tonight.”
Lena raised an eyebrow.
“On whose budget?”
Chris pointed at Vivian with a dramatic grin.
“The successful designer’s.”
Vivian laughed.
“I knew there was a catch.”
The room filled with laughter once again.
For the first time in years...
Vivian didn’t feel like an outsider.
She felt like she belonged.
By six-thirty that evening, the team had gathered at a cozy Italian restaurant a few blocks from the studio.
The place wasn’t extravagant.
It was warm, lively, and filled with conversation.
Glasses clinked together as everyone congratulated Vivian.
Daniel raised his drink.
“To Vivian.”
“May this be the first of many successful projects.”
“Cheers!”
Everyone echoed the toast.
Vivian smiled shyly.
“I honestly don’t know what to say.”
Chris laughed.
“Then don’t.”
“Just promise you won’t leave us when famous companies start trying to steal you.”
“I don’t think that’ll happen.”
“You’d be surprised,” Lena replied.
“Talent attracts opportunities.”
As dinner continued, Vivian excused herself to wash her hands.
When she returned a few minutes later, she noticed everyone staring toward the television mounted above the restaurant bar.
The volume had been turned up.
A reporter stood on a red carpet outside one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.
“ ... and among tonight’s distinguished guests is Kingsley Group CEO Adrian Kingsley, who arrived only moments ago...”
Vivian’s footsteps slowed.
On the screen...
Adrian stepped out of a sleek black car.
A second later, Sophia Bennett stepped out behind him.
The two walked side by side toward the entrance as cameras flashed relentlessly.
The reporter smiled at the camera.
“Once again, Mr. Kingsley attended with his longtime executive partner, Sophia Bennett. The pair continue to attract attention wherever they appear.”
The camera lingered on them for a few extra seconds.
Then came the sentence that made Vivian’s smile disappear.
“Many guests have already mistaken them for a married couple.”
The restaurant fell strangely quiet.
Chris looked from the television ... to Vivian.
His expression shifted from confusion to horror.
“ ... Vivian...”
He stopped himself.
No one at the table knew what to say.
Vivian stood perfectly still, her eyes fixed on the television.
Then, with remarkable composure, she looked away.
A small smile appeared on her face.
“Your pasta is getting cold.”
Her voice was gentle.
Calm.
As if nothing had happened.
No one spoke.
But everyone understood.
Sometimes...
The people who smiled the most...
Were the ones hurting the deepest.
The cheerful atmosphere that had filled the restaurant only moments ago slowly faded.
Chris awkwardly cleared his throat before forcing a smile.
“They’re ... probably just attending another business event.”
No one replied.
Everyone knew he was trying to make the situation less uncomfortable.
Vivian looked at the television one last time before calmly returning to her seat.
“They’ve always attended business events together.”
She picked up her fork.
“Let’s eat.”
Her voice was steady.
Too steady.
Mia watched her with concern.
“Vivian...”
“It’s alright.”
She smiled.
“Really.”
