The rain had been falling since dusk, coating the city in a silver haze.

From the floor-to-ceiling windows of Kingsley Mansion, the glittering skyline looked breathtaking, but inside the luxurious home, silence ruled every corner.

Vivian Hart stood alone in the dining room, adjusting the last white rose in the crystal vase.

She stepped back, studying the table one final time.

Everything was perfect.

A candlelit dinner.

Fresh white roses.

Adrian’s favorite dishes, all prepared by her own hands.

At the center of the table sat a small chocolate cake decorated with elegant gold lettering.

Happy Third Anniversary.

Vivian’s lips curved into a faint smile.

“Maybe...”

“This year will be different.”

She whispered the words more to herself than to anyone else.

Hope was a dangerous thing.

It made people wait longer than they should.

She glanced at the antique clock hanging on the wall.

Seven o’clock.

Adrian had promised he’d be home before dinner.

He rarely made promises.

Perhaps that was why she believed this one.

A knock sounded behind her.

She turned to find Mrs. Eleanor, the housekeeper who had worked for the Kingsley family for over twenty years.

“Madam,” the older woman said gently, “everything is ready.”

Vivian smiled warmly.

“Thank you, Eleanor.”

The older woman looked at the beautifully decorated dining room before letting out a quiet sigh.

“You’ve worked on this since morning.”

“It’ll be worth it.”

Vivian answered with confidence she didn’t quite feel.

Eleanor hesitated.

“Would you like me to call Mr. Kingsley’s assistant?”

“No.”

Vivian quickly shook her head.

“He said he’d come home.”

“I trust him.”

The older woman lowered her eyes.

She had heard those words too many times.

Mr. Kingsley was an honorable businessman.

A brilliant CEO.

But as a husband...

Even the servants pitied Vivian.

“Very well, Madam.”

As Eleanor left, Vivian walked toward the grand piano standing near the window.

Her fingertips brushed across its polished surface.

Three years ago...

She had started learning to play.

Not because she loved music.

Because Adrian once mentioned during an interview that he found piano melodies relaxing after stressful meetings.

He never knew she’d spent months practicing.

He never asked.

Her gaze drifted toward a framed wedding photograph on top of the piano.

The picture showed a handsome man in a black tuxedo standing beside a radiant bride in white.

Everyone who saw the photo thought they looked perfect together.

No one could see how distant Adrian’s expression had been.

Not even on their wedding day.

Vivian picked up the frame.

“I was so happy that day.”

She traced Adrian’s face with her thumb.

“I thought...”

“If I loved you enough...”

“You’d eventually love me too.”

A tear threatened to escape.

She blinked it away.

“No.”

“Not tonight.”

Tonight was supposed to be happy.

She refused to cry.

Her phone vibrated against the table.

Her heartbeat quickened.

She reached for it immediately.

The smile on her face disappeared.

Instead of Adrian’s name...

It was a message from her adoptive mother.

Mrs. Hart:

“Don’t forget your sister’s engagement dinner next weekend. Since you’re the wife of the Kingsley family’s heir, remember not to embarrass us.”

Vivian stared at the message.

Not a single word asking how she was.

Not a happy anniversary.

Not even a greeting.

Only another reminder of her responsibilities.

She quietly locked her phone.

Some things never changed.

Not in the Hart family.

Not in her marriage.

Not anywhere.

The front door suddenly opened.

Vivian’s eyes lit up.

She hurried into the entrance hall.

“Adri...”

The word caught in her throat.

It wasn’t Adrian.

It was Ethan Brooks, Adrian’s personal assistant.

He removed the rain from his coat before offering her an apologetic smile.

“Good evening, Mrs. Kingsley.”

Vivian’s smile faded.

“Ethan...”

“Is Adrian with you?”

He hesitated.

“No.”

“He asked me to bring these documents.”

He handed her a leather briefcase.

“And...”

Vivian’s fingers tightened around the handle.

“And what?”

“Mr. Kingsley has another meeting.”

“He’ll be delayed.”

Her heart sank.

“For how long?”

“I’m not sure.”

She lowered her head.

“I understand.”

Ethan shifted uncomfortably.

He had worked beside Adrian for six years.

No one knew better than he did how much Vivian loved his boss.

She never complained.

Never caused trouble.

She even prepared homemade lunches for Adrian that often went untouched because meetings ran late.

Sometimes Ethan wondered whether Adrian noticed any of it.

“Mrs. Kingsley...”

Ethan spoke carefully.

“Mr. Kingsley didn’t forget today’s date.”

Vivian looked up.

“He didn’t?”

“He remembered.”

A flicker of hope appeared in her eyes.

“Really?”

Ethan nodded.

“He simply...”

His voice trailed off.

Vivian finished the sentence herself.

“ ... has something more important.”

Ethan couldn’t deny it.

Business always came first.

Vivian forced a smile.

“Thank you for bringing the documents.”

“I’ll make sure he gets them.”

After Ethan left, the mansion became silent once again.

Vivian looked around the enormous house.

It was beautiful.

Luxurious.

Elegant.

Yet every room felt empty.

A home wasn’t built with marble floors or crystal chandeliers.

It was built with laughter.

With conversations over dinner.

With two people choosing each other every single day.

She had everything money could buy.

Except the one thing she’d wanted most.

Her husband’s heart.

Outside, thunder rumbled across the sky.

Vivian slowly returned to the dining room.
