The author is using my voice again to set me up. All right, he told me I was going to be killed on page 40, but he didn’t tell me I’d be in on the planning. This was gross, but it’s another of those things he says I won’t remember seeing. I’m feeling like selective amnesia is part of my story.

Marcus Reynolds Sr. was steaming. He’d been planning this for years and now he was at risk of being discovered. He promised Rex Laughlin he could deliver Miranda K Development to Regal Associates before the bids for the Global project were due. Time was getting short and Anya was being stubborn. If that accountant she hired exposed his skimming of profits, the whole thing would fall apart.

JR wasn’t being helpful. He was like a puppy following Anya and did anything she suggested. But she wasn’t giving him the time of day. He was seriously in the friend zone and didn’t even realize it. Marcus had taken every opportunity for the past twenty years to push the two together. Even Leon thought they’d make a good match. JR was five years younger than Anya, but in their thirties that shouldn’t really be a consideration. Still, Anya treated him like a little brother.

If Anya was going to be that difficult, Marcus was going to need extreme measures. He fingered the thumb drive with all the drawings from the design team on it and picked up his phone.

“I need to see you, Boss,” Marcus said when Rex answered the phone. “I’ve got important material for your proposal.”

“Get here tonight for dinner. I’m onsite now and can’t be bothered.” Rex disconnected abruptly.

“What an asshole,” Marcus sighed.

Of course, Marcus had known for a long time that Rex was an asshole. It was how he got into this mess in the first place. Regal Associates was the largest land developer in the Greater Lewisburg Metropolitan Area that covered most of four counties and included the smaller city of Cedar Park, but he’d always kept his business confined to the southeast and Lewisburg proper. His grandfather had been known as a ruthless land baron who developed much of downtown and Rex had learned his business practices from the old man.

In short, Rex had schemed and strongarmed himself into an unchallenged superior role. He even controlled the mayor and most of the city council. When Rex heard that Miranda had died, he jumped at the chance to make an offer for Miranda K Development. Marcus had been willing to sell, based on a promise from Rex that he would take over as the CEO. Leon, Bernie, and Anya had flatly refused the offer.

They felt they had a good thing going with the development in and around Cedar Park and believed—rightly so—that the company would be dismantled if they sold and close to a thousand people would be left unemployed. Rex’s influence didn’t extend into Cedar Park, but he’d kept his options open.

Marcus had met with Rex and Rex told him there were ways he could still drive out the competition without actually acquiring it. Marcus had managed to siphon off minor amounts of money to pay for his rather lavish lifestyle, three divorces, and his son’s education in one of the top architecture programs in the country. But Rex had convinced him the company only needed profit to stay in existence. He could get rich by taking more of the profit, and Rex would help in the background with pressure on the sites and crews.

The problem was that nothing Marcus had done in embezzling funds from Miranda K pointed to Rex or Regal Associates. If he was exposed now, it would all be on him. Regal would be clean.

“If this Cal Levin fellow uncovers what I’ve done for the past four years when he does this audit, I’ll go to prison and I swear I won’t go alone,” Marcus said.

“Is your life worth so little, Marcus? You’d try to threaten me?”

“No! Of course not, Boss. But he’ll uncover payments to Regal in the mess as well. I’m not the only one the books will point to.” Marcus was grasping at straws. The evidence pointing to Regal was strictly circumstantial. But Rex had not risen to his current place in the industry by leaving loose ends.

“What can a franchise accountant possibly discover?” he asked.

“I did some checking around,” Marcus said. “Levin also manages the accounting for Bernie Davis of Davis Construction. That old man wouldn’t trust just any accountant.”

“I thought when that bastard died, Davis Construction would die with him. I know Jeff Bardsley is a puppet. He can’t hold the firm together—especially if it goes into receivership. If he’s got a good money man, though, I could have trouble acquiring his assets. You need to get my accountant on your books. He knows what to do. Here’s his card. Conflicting audits will point to incompetence. Now get out of here.”

As soon as Marcus was out the door, Rex was on the phone.
