So, my real name is Hari Seldon and I live on Trantor, right?

I mean, really. The author could have come up with at least a dozen ways to end this story happily ever after and let me go home with my lovers and screw the rest of our lives away. Instead, he scrapes the bottom of a seventy-five-year-old barrel and makes me create the mathematics behind Vince Gordon’s psychohistory.

I’m an accountant, dammit! A very good accountant and I accept the kudos of my peers and company on my business-planning skills. But how did I manage to come up with a fifteen-year plan that actually worked?

Let me tell you, this author is no genius, either. Sure, everyone loves witty repartee and quick comebacks. But when you see a quick comeback in the book? It took the author three days to come up with that.

What’s more, this big sudden influx of wealth, which I never wanted in the first place, is going to create all kinds of problems with my two beauties. We had some well-established basis for division of wealth in our relationship. Anya held her fifty-two percent of Miranda K Development, plus a steady income from her job, well-defined bonuses, and a draw of a hundred thousand a year in profit. I had inherited ninety percent of Bernie’s Davis Construction. That had a fixed stock price of $400,000, but it was stock, not cash. I knew there were other things in the brokerage account, but I hadn’t really looked to see what else. As for Romy, both Anya and I could be flat broke and she’d just love us the same.

Now, you take my little $400,000 and multiply it by nine thousand times! Suddenly, I have more money than God. Well, depending on what god you compare it to. There’s just a lot of difference. We are no longer on an equal or even comparative footing.

Let me put it this way: If you have a million minutes, it comes out to just a little less than two years. If you have a billion minutes, it comes out to almost two millennia! Yeah! Compare that. What was I going to do with that kind of wealth—even if it was all paper stocks?

Speaking of paper, let me use another example because I’m obsessive about it. There are 500 sheets of paper in a ream (80 gsm or about 20# paper). Stacking a billion pages on top of each other would make a stack forty-four miles high, or six miles higher than most jumbo jets fly!

Want some more illustrations? No? The only ones who really understand what a billion dollars is are billionaires and mathematicians. Billionaires because they have it. Mathematicians because they are used to dealing with imaginary numbers.

Okay, I’ll quit. I just wanted to give all this so-called money away.

“Neil?” Romy asked in a very small voice as she leaned against me on one side of the back seat of the Maybach and Anya leaned against the other side. “Will you still love us now that you’re rich?”

There it was. We weren’t half way home yet and the big question had already been sprung. I couldn’t just tell her, ‘Of course. No amount of money means more than you do.’ Romy was a well-paid assistant at over $200k per year. But the difference between that and $3.6 billion? Yeah. I already beat that horse to death.

“Honey, having a lot of money isn’t an easy thing. I don’t know what I’ll do. I don’t want it to change what we have, but part of that will be up to you. We can’t just ignore it,” I said, kissing her tenderly.

“How did you and Vince arrive at the number you did?” Anya asked.

“It was supposed to limit wealth accumulation in the hands of just a few individuals. We figured that no idea was so brilliant that it was worth half a trillion dollars to the person who came up with it. That money has to come from someplace and we wanted whatever money was earned by our company to mostly go into the pockets of employees, vendors, and the public. I don’t think either of us considered whether a few billion dollars was too much. Maybe Vince has had more time to realize what a windfall just fell into our laps. I never expected that when he actually founded a company, he’d keep part of it reserved for me. If he’d given me a million dollars for the business plan and pro formas we developed in college, I’d be over the moon. It would show me that he was really the kind of guy I thought he was when we were roommates. He’s so much better than that.”

“Honey, Romy and I won’t be greedy. Dad talked about how we need an antenuptial agreement to keep our capital separate,” Anya said. “It’s still a good idea. Dad will probably have second thoughts about that when he realizes how much more you bring to our relationship than I do, but I won’t let him interfere.”

“I’d like to keep it quiet,” I said. “Revealing that I have a bunch of stock in Global would bring the sycophants out of the woodwork.”

I was thinking of Dora, of course. She would be like a fly attracted to shit. It was better that the trust be concealed.

We were all a little shy when we got ready for bed that night—all hyper-aware that our circumstances had changed. Anya’s company had just landed a billion-dollar development project. I’d just been handed a stake in the company that hired her. Romy was still just overwhelmed with it all.

We might also have had a little too much to drink, celebrating the occasion with Vince and Laura.

Anya started to pull on her silk pajamas, but I put a hand on her and shook my head. Romy saw the interaction and just left her little party dress on the floor where she was standing. We crawled into bed naked, not for sex, but just to have as much contact with our lovers as we could get.

We stayed in bed most of Sunday, mostly because none of us wanted to face Leon with the recent knowledge of wealth we had. Or I had. The more I thought about suddenly finding I was the beneficiary of a trust worth $3.6 billion was really too much to grasp.

“You know, if we’d have set it up to hold just one percent of the company each instead of five percent, we’d still have over $700 million. That’s insane,” I said as I lounged in bed with Romy and Anya.

“Do you have to take it?” Romy said. “I mean, don’t you have enough with Davis Construction?”

“Probably. The thing with a small company like that is maintaining enough capital to weather the bad times as well as the good. It’s the same with Miranda K. The original investors never touched the capital. I think that was what frustrated Marcus most of all. He put money in and couldn’t get it out,” I said.

“Only he received several times his investment over the years,” Anya said. “Even without embezzling and cooking the books. He could have cashed the shares in to the company for the face value any time. He attempted to take 50% of the face value as an offer from Regal.”

“He can’t have been stupid enough to think he could transfer them that way,” I sighed. “I’m guessing he was playing Laughlin all along, knowing the shares couldn’t be transferred like that.”

“That was a dangerous game,” Romy said. “Those guys are evil and brutal.”

“Don’t I know it,” I agreed, thinking of having been murdered by them. “But I’m going to have to figure out what to do with all that wealth sitting there. It doesn’t do anyone any good just being held.”

“You don’t have to make the decision within a day or two,” Anya said.

She rolled toward me and we kissed tenderly. She kissed Romy just as sweetly and Romy pressed her lips to mine. Discussions were over for the time being.

I wonder if the author ever had any actual experience with a multiple relationship. I have a feeling it’s like one of those slightly adapted adages: “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, write about it.”

The intricacies of fitting together all those body parts are almost beyond human comprehension. It isn’t just a matter of figuring out whose hand is where and which tab fits into which slot at any given time. It isn’t possible to make every action fair and equal!
