“That was probably more drama than you were expecting over dinner this evening,” Vince said. “There was a purpose to this display. Over the past several weeks, we’ve had our crew working on the warehouse, as you all know. We started that project before the Global Acres bids were called for because of a couple things. It establishes traffic out there so we could get the infrastructure established. Second, it let us insert an investigative team to survey the atmosphere and any problems we might encounter. When you start your part of the development, we don’t want you facing vandalism, extortion, or supply interruptions. We needed to clean that up first. Working on the Global Acres Commercial and Residential Project should not put you, your workers, or your businesses at risk.”
There was a solid round of applause from close to 200 builders, contractors, developers, and spouses who were in the ballroom for the gala. Everyone was pleased that Rex and his whole crew had been taken down. Nearly everyone had been shaken down or threatened in some way. I thought there were a few who had also cut a deal with Regal, but I wouldn’t hold it against them. I didn’t think they’d miss Rex and his thugs.
“Nearly everyone in this room gets a piece of the pie,” Vince said. “But we know there has to be someone leading the design and management of the overall project. I believe most of you are aware that Regal Associates placed the low bid and had the largest organization. That wasn’t enough. We found numerous flaws in their proposal suggesting they had liberally borrowed from other proposals on the table. Instead of a quality proposal, they tried to buy their way in. So, we eliminated them and all their subsidiaries from the project.”
There was more applause, but people settled down pretty quickly.
“Five years ago, when my planning team determined Cedar Park would be our next development site, I came to town to get a feel for it myself. I met a remarkable woman many of you knew by the name of Miranda Kendall. I had dinner with her and her husband, Leon, sitting just over there. When I read the various proposals, I was pleased to see the name of Miranda K Development. Though I was saddened to hear of Miranda’s passing, I am delighted to see the company under the leadership of her daughter, Anya Kendall.”
Anya stood at Vince’s gesture and people cheered for her. She hadn’t been called to the podium yet, though, so she sat back down.
“Our corporate concern, of course, was that Miranda K would be stretched too thin to be effective in developing the entire project. As I read the list of partners in her proposal—and most of you are on that list—one name stood out among all the rest. Based on that name alone, I convinced the board and the planning committee to award this contract to the joint partnership of Miranda K Development, Anya Kendall CEO, and Davis Construction, Neil Levinson CEO.”
Our names were flashed up on the screen behind Vince and he motioned for us to come to the podium. I stood and helped Anya stand from her seat. She shot a questioning look at me. I just shook my head. We walked arm in arm to the podium as the rest of the room erupted in a standing ovation. I was glad I wore a tuxedo because I was escorting the most beautiful woman in the room. Everyone was pretty pleased with Anya getting the winning bid.
“Anya and Neil, congratulations. Would you like to recognize some others?” Vince asked.
“Thank you, Mr. Gordon,” Anya said. “And thank you for recognizing my mother and father, without whom I would never have made it this far. This was a team effort at Miranda K and I’d like to recognize our staff. While everyone played an important part, I especially want to recognize our Design Director, JR Reynolds. It is his master plan for the look and the feel of Global Acres we will be following.”
JR was really surprised when Anya asked him to stand for recognition. The guy was almost in tears when he saw his father led out in handcuffs. He started to leave, but Romy had taken over to keep him in his seat, assuring him that he was not being judged based on his father. The screen showed a montage of images of JR’s drawings of the different parts of the development. For most of the people there, it was the first time they’d seen the concept drawings.
“The development and construction community here in Cedar Park and the outlying area has truly been a community of people concerned with and committed to the quality of life of the residents and businesses of Cedar Park. Over the past month, we have talked to each of you to establish the role you could play in the overall development of Global Acres. Many of you put in bids for various parts of the project and we incorporated your bids by reference in our overall proposal. I want to thank you and share my sincere desire that we work together on this project from today onward.”
Anya gave me a nudge and I shifted to the microphone.
“Davis Construction has been active in this community for forty years,” I said. “We are sad that Bernie Davis passed before this big day. He’d be so proud. We have partnered with Miranda K Development on many projects, most recently, the Starlight Mall and adjoining Office Building. I think Bernie Davis knew each and every one of you in this building. We lost a cornerstone of the community when Bernie passed away last month. I didn’t know that he had left me in charge of his life’s work until just a few weeks ago. I share that responsibility with our Chief Operating Officer Jeff Bardsley and thank him for all his faithful work for Bernie over the past ten years. I hope we’ll have great success together in the future. And finally, I want to thank Anya Kendall and our assistant Romy Reese for taking me in at a time in my life when I was lost, injured, and failing. Your faith in who I was and what I could do means the world to me.”
I figured that was enough. I didn’t want to bring up my having lost my memory for a while. It seemed like these days I could remember even more than I could before I was beaten.
And a lot of it was coming together this night.
As Vince continued to read off the names of those who had been awarded contracts—mostly directly from our proposal—we sat at the table with dessert and coffee. People circulated in the room and many stopped by our table to offer congratulations and express their good wishes for a successful project. Most of those comments were directed to Anya with a few to Leon and a share to me.
“Are you going to be doing some more housecleaning now that the culprits have been arrested?” one of the contractors asked Anya, glancing meaningfully at JR.
“We’ve worked closely with FinCEN and the other branches of law enforcement these past few weeks and believe we’ve covered all our leaks and liabilities,” Anya said. “I don’t see a reason for any massive purges.”
The guy made a conciliatory noise and left us. JR leaned across Romy and me.
“Anya, I understand if you think I’m a liability for the company,” he said. “I don’t want to badly affect the company’s image. I’ll resign first thing Monday morning. I’m so ashamed of my father I don’t think I can face the company.”
