He took a day off! He’s such an obsessive scribbler, I didn’t think we’d get any time off this month. But while I was lounging in bed with my ladies, enjoying a little coital bliss, he took a day off and left us there. I’m sure he didn’t realize we were happy or he’d have started a fire or something.
What if he did know? I mean, hear me out on this. Maybe he gave up and let us take control of the story. The first thing we’d do is stay in bed! Maybe the author isn’t such a bastard after all. Maybe he took a day off specifically to give us more time on the page where we made love. I’m not going to change my opinion all at once. We’ll see what happens on the next page.
Monday morning, we scarcely had time to kiss each other before the three of us had to rush to the office. This was the day before our presentation at the Global office. We’d scrubbed the documents one last time on Friday and sent the text version to the VP of Development. Our creative department worked all weekend on the presentation materials. Guess everyone didn’t have as nice a Saturday night as I did.
Our entire executive team met in the conference room to review and practice the presentation. I asked Jeff to present the Davis portion and he did a great job. Anya was the main presenter and she was not only beautiful but a truly professional executive.
Yes, I know it’s sexist to talk about how beautiful she was in a professional business setting. But it was hard to forget that just a few hours earlier, she and Romy were naked in my arms. I glanced appreciatively at the personal assistant, too, and could see her blush all the way across the room.
Jeff had worked extensively with Sam, Miranda’s production manager, and as a result, Sam was not as stumbling as he usually was. Of course, a major part was JR’s presentation of the architectural planning and design. Ruth and Melody did a super job of presenting the marketing plan and the contract issues.
I stepped in to present the company financials and funding plan as the acting CFO. That’s why I had Jeff handle the Davis portion of the presentation. It wouldn’t look good to have the same person present both the Miranda financials and the Davis commitment. Most of the staff at Miranda K didn’t know I was the CEO of Davis Construction.
There were a few corrections to be made and the creative group went back to work.
I had other business to take care of Monday afternoon. We’d make our official presentation at the local Global office on Tuesday. There were things in my own life I needed to put in order before we exposed ourselves to the people at Global.
I met the executor of Bernie’s estate at the office of Taurus Financial and Brokerage. We were admitted to see Bernie’s broker and financial planner, James Cochran. I’d done a lot of Bernie’s financial planning, but none of the execution. James took us inside and reviewed all the documents: Bernie’s certified death certificate, his will, and my ID. Then he pulled out a sheaf of papers the executor and I needed to sign. When we were finished with the paperwork, the executor left and James opened Bernie’s accounts to me.
It wasn’t as simple as I’d assumed it would be. In addition to the ownership of Davis Construction, Bernie had other securities held by the brokerage and the accounts would still need to cover the remainder of Bernie’s medical bills. Regardless, I was suddenly a very wealthy man.
I can’t say the presentation at Global Tuesday was flawless, but it was damn good. There were a lot of nods and smiles around the table We fielded questions and held our own against them.
Then Bill Williams, the Global VP of Development, asked everyone to leave the room except Anya and me. When everyone was cleared, the hard part began.
“Your group made a great presentation and I don’t think there is any question that you are the kind of company Global wants to do business with,” Bill said. “We’ve received concerning information, however, that you might have some internal struggles that could affect the contract. This might even include embezzlement. We’re concerned about that.”
“You have good sources inside FinCEN,” Anya said. “That information should not have been disclosed.”
“It didn’t come from FinCEN, but from one of your competitors,” Bill said. “Is FinCEN involved?”
“As soon as I suspected something might be amiss, I hired Mr. Levinson to do a complete audit of our books and track down the problem,” Anya said. “The evidence all pointed to our former CFO, Marcus Reynolds, Sr.” She looked at me and I took up the narrative.
“I’m a CPA and am certified to conduct all manner of audits on corporate records,” I said. “When I presented the evidence to Ms. Kendall, we decided to immediately contact FinCEN. The case was assigned to Special Agent Jordan Grant. At that time, we were given clearance to proceed with business as usual. An arrest warrant for Marcus Reynolds, Sr. was issued, but he fled the country before he could be apprehended. All his assets have been frozen, including his shares of Miranda K. It appears he was involved in other illegal activities, including securities fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion. Agent Grant has indicated that none of those touched Miranda K directly.”
“And do you have any pending agreements with other companies who may be bidding for the project?” Bill asked.
“Our only operating agreement is a cooperative agreement to work with Davis Construction on this project,” Anya said. “We have worked together on many projects over the past twenty or more years. Both companies are closely held C-Corporations and would require agreement of all shareholders to forge any sale or transfer of ownership. We have letters of intent from several other contractors to work on phases of the project.”
We continued the conversation and I had to admit to becoming the Davis CEO after Bernie’s death. My position as CFO of Miranda K was temporary. We finally ended the meeting with Bill agreeing to forward our proposal with his recommendation to his executive committee. The final award of the proposal would be made in two weeks at a gala reception. Now we just had to wait out the clock.
“You really won’t stay at Miranda as CFO?” Anya asked as we rode together in the back seat of the Maybach.
Romy had been waiting in the lobby for us to emerge from our meeting. It was already past four o’clock. She’d scheduled a team meeting for us for Wednesday morning, but said we had no other commitments for the day. We decided to go to dinner in Capital City, an hour-plus north of us. That gave us all a chance to talk over the business.
“I’ve been spending as much time lately at Davis Construction as at Miranda K,” I said. “I have a lot more work to do there before I can devote more time to your company. I can continue as acting CFO for Miranda K until we get this contract settled, but then I really need to devote myself to Bernie’s affairs.”
“What power does your ex-wife wield over Bernie’s estate?” Romy asked from the front seat.
“Good question,” Anya agreed. “Is she going to create any problems?”
“She’ll certainly try to,” I said. “But she has limited ability—either legally or mentally. I met with the executor yesterday and went over the terms of Bernie’s will. When he built the mansion out in Winston Manor, he built it for his sister and her family with the understanding that he had his own suite there as well. The sister divorced her husband and slowly went crazy before she committed suicide. Bernie continued to live in the house with his niece until she married me. It’s clear in the will that Dora Davis is the sole heir of the house, the grounds, and all contained therein. But it doesn’t give her any control of Davis Construction. Whatever she might think, she doesn’t have that.”
“That’s good to know. But she’s your ex-wife. Does she have any leverage over you? And do you own any of Davis Construction?” Anya asked.
“I was very careful to divide all our assets according to the law when we divorced,” I said. “The divorce was final weeks before Bernie passed away. Dora Davis has no rights to anything I own now.”
“Okay. That doesn’t really answer my other question.”
“I’m now the Chairman and CEO of Davis Construction. That should be all that’s necessary,” I said.
