Once I looked at the accounts, it was as if I simply understood everything. I saw the patterns and looked at the notes I’d made in my own spreadsheets on the computer. Now, with access to the full records, it didn’t take long to spot the fraudulent account. I couldn’t really tell who it was, though all signs pointed to the top of the financial ladder at Miranda K. I hadn’t met the guy, but the picture that was being painted indicated someone with top level clearance. Enough to channel millions of dollars into a private account.
I’m not really a computer hacker, so I couldn’t get into the accounts the money had been paid to. Instead of just the one account I’d originally spotted, there were half a dozen accounts that had no legitimate reason to exist and no actual company behind them.
I breathed a heavy sigh and stood up from the desk. Romy looked up at me from her space.
“I didn’t think you were going to come up for air,” she said. “I asked a couple of times if you’d like lunch.”
I glanced at my watch—another thing Anya had bought me to replace the shattered one I’d been wearing when I was found. It was almost two in the afternoon.
“Lunch would be great!” I said. “If you’ll excuse me, the restroom is just as important.”
I headed to the restroom door and Romy said she’d be back with lunch in a few minutes.
I couldn’t believe I’d worked for six hours or so without even standing up. That wasn’t good for a guy with diabetes. I took my test kit into the bathroom with me. I thought I’d burst before I finally managed to piss. Such a relief. I washed my hands and pulled my shirt out of my pants to prick myself and check my blood-sugar. Yeah. If I was going to eat something, I needed to get a dose of insulin, though the monitor showed that I needed less than I thought I would need.
As I was injecting myself, the door flew open and Anya burst in with her slacks already pulled below her butt. We both froze, staring at each other.
“Get out!” she yelled.
I stumbled out the door and she slammed it shut behind me. I was panting and still had my shirt pulled up with one hand and the needle in the other. It was embarrassing, though neither of us was really exposed. I made it to my desk and dropped the needle into the wastebasket. I loosened my belt and zipper so I could tuck my shirt back in when Romy came into the office and stopped, staring at me.
“What are you doing?” she screamed. “Can’t you at least go to the bathroom to jack off?”
“Jack off? I was just giving myself an injection. Anya crashed into the bathroom and...”
“Pervert! What did you do to Anya?”
“I didn’t do...”
“This is too much! Anya doesn’t like you like that!”
She made it to my side in three steps and swung her hand at my face. I managed to grab it, but the momentum knocked me back into my chair and Romy into my lap. Her face was just an inch from mine and I couldn’t help myself. I planted a kiss right on her lips.
“Oh!” she squeaked.
I thought she’d jump up and get away from me, but instead, she grabbed me behind the head and held me to her lips as she kissed me back.
“What’s going on?” Anya demanded as she left the restroom.
We both jumped apart and Romy nearly fell on the floor. I caught her again and gently lifted her up before I realized I’d caught her with one hand on her butt.
“Pervert!” Romy cried, jumping away from me.
“We ... I was just...” I started.
“Do you two think you’re in a cheap anime?” Anya asked.
Then she glanced back at the restroom where she saw my open test kit, still on the counter. She snorted and then started laughing. Both women blushed and I could feel the heat rising in my own face. I finished buckling my belt as I stood up.
“Maybe we are,” Anya laughed.
“It wasn’t like that!” Romy explained.
“I know. Neither was me barging into the bathroom while Neil was in it. I’m sure you were just helping him tuck in his shirt.”
We all just continued to stare at each other with occasional snorts or giggles. Romy retrieved the lunch sack she’d brought me from the cafeteria and handed it to me.
“Sorry. I dropped this,” she said.
“Thank you for getting lunch. Since I’ve just taken insulin, I really need to eat it now—whatever it is.”
“Sorry I barged in on you,” Anya said. “Both times.”
She collapsed in her desk chair as I hungrily ate the tuna salad with vegetables Romy had thoughtfully provided. It was a perfect meal for me. She went to Anya’s minifridge and got me a can of sparkling water, then went to her own desk.
“So, anything exciting this morning?” Anya asked, feigning indifference.
“Neil sat at the desk for six hours straight tapping on his computer. I just went out to get him food when he went to the restroom,” Romy explained. She was still blushing.
“I am completely sick of meetings. I’ve had all the human contact I can stomach for the day,” Anya said when I proceeded to stuff my mouth full instead of answering the question. I finally took a swallow of the sparkling water and inhaled.
“You need to call the FBI,” I said. “You’ve been defrauded of about six million dollars over the past four years. Maybe it should be FinCEN you call. It certainly involves bank fraud as well as embezzlement.”
“Who?” demanded Anya, standing from her desk.
“Not positive, but everything I’ve seen points to your CFO,” I said. “I can’t get into private accounts or even get good information on them. I just know there are at least half a dozen online bank accounts with business names that don’t exist as businesses.”
“Marcus, you son of a bitch!” Anya growled.
“Best not to confront anyone until the proper authorities have been alerted,” I said. “You could spook the perp and have him flee the country before anything else can be done.”
“Right. This information shouldn’t leave this room,” Anya said. She looked over at Romy who made a zipping motion over her mouth.
“I’m shot. Thank you for the salad. It will hold me for a couple of hours, but I’m not feeling like I should stay here any longer today. I have everything I need to continue on the laptop,” I said.
“Pack it up. Romy, bring the car around. It’s time to go home. We can continue ... um ... what we were doing ... when we get there.”
Romy nodded and left the office. Anya stalked across the floor as I packed up the computer. She shoved me down in my chair and plopped in my lap.
“Don’t take advantage of Romy,” she lectured me. “She’s younger and not as experienced in handling this kind of thing. If you have unavoidable urges, tell me.”
“Really, Anya. It was all a misunderstanding. Just like...” I nodded toward the bathroom door. She blushed.
“Let’s assume that was all just a misunderstanding and don’t mention it again. Better go get your test kit before we leave.”
She hesitated a moment and then gave me a quick kiss before she got off my lap.
There was a burning question in my mind. How could I help it? Were both of these beautiful women going to become my lovers?
All I heard was hysterical laughter and In your dreams.
Damned author. We’d see about that.
When we got home, we spent the rest of the day in the Kendalls’ study. It had a couple of desks and a large desktop computer, plus WiFi connectivity. The three of us looked at the screen as I explained what I’d found.
“But you aren’t sure it was Marcus?” Anya asked skeptically.
“He’s the top suspect,” I said. “But a lower level person in the finance department could have forged his permissions. It’s very unlikely that anyone not in finance could have done it, but I don’t know how skilled your IT department is.”
“So, do we try to figure it out?” Romy asked. “I can compile a list of possible suspects.”
“A list is good,” I said, “but I don’t think we want to investigate. Any mistake could tip off the embezzler. That’s why I think we should call in FinCEN immediately.”
“This will kill our bid for the Global development project,” Anya sighed. “We might as well resign from the competition.”
“Not necessarily, Anya,” I said, putting an arm around her. She leaned against me. “Once we contact FinCEN, we should focus on the bid to make sure we are clear about the discovery and investigation. Global is a good company that respects honesty in its relationships more than anything.”
“You’re sure?”
“Uh ... I still don’t have my memory completely back. It just feels that way to me,” I said.
“I’ll trust that.”
Friday, we spent the morning contacting FinCEN and sending a written report and invitation to investigate. It took a while to get agent Jordan Grant to pay attention to us. He’d been at it for years and understood what we were facing in trying to rescue the company while bringing an internal matter to justice.
