I woke up with her name on my lips.
The room was still dark. The fairy lights were off. But I could feel her beside me—her arm draped across my waist, her breath warm on my neck, her body curved against mine like she’d been made to fit there.
I didn’t move. I didn’t want to wake her.
But she was already awake.
Her hand slid up my stomach. Her lips found my shoulder.
“Good morning,” she whispered.
I turned to face her. She was beautiful in the pale light filtering through the curtain. Her hair was wild, tangled, spreading across the pillow. Her eyes were soft. Unguarded.
“You stayed,” she said.
“I told you I wasn’t running.”
She kissed me. Soft. Slow. Her hand found the back of my neck, pulling me closer. I could taste sleep on her lips, and I wanted to drink it forever.
Then the rain started.
Not a drizzle. A downpour. The kind that floods Lagos streets and cancels lectures. The kind that traps you inside and makes you grateful for it.
She pulled back and looked at the window. Water was streaming down the glass. The sky was dark grey, heavy, unforgiving.
“We’re stuck here,” she said.
I smiled.
“Good.”
She laughed—low, warm. Her hand found my waist. Pulled me against her.
“You’re not cold anymore,” she said.
“I’m not.”
“Because you’re not running.”
“Because I’m not running.”
She kissed me again. Deeper this time. Her leg slid between mine, her thigh pressing against the heat between my legs. I gasped against her mouth.
“Chi-Chi—”
“Tell me what you want,” she whispered.
“I want you.”
“Tell me again.”
“I want you, Chi-Chi. I want you so much I can’t think straight.”
She smiled. Slow. Dark.
“Good. Because I can’t think straight either.”
Her hand slid down my stomach. Her fingers found the edge of my underwear—the same pair from last night. She pulled it aside.
Her fingers found me. Warm. Wet. Slippery with wanting.
I cried out. My hips bucked. She covered my mouth with hers, swallowing the sound.
“Shh,” she breathed. “We’re alone. But still. Be quiet for me.”
I nodded, my eyes wide, my body trembling.
She moved her finger slowly. In. Out. In. Out. Her thumb found something that made stars burst behind my eyes.
“Chi-Chi—”
“I know,” she said. “I know. Let go. I’m here.”
I came apart. Right there in her hands. My body arching off the mattress. Her name on my lips like a prayer.
We lay there after. Breathing hard. Tangled in each other.
She kissed my forehead. My nose. My lips.
“That,” she said, “was the first time.”
I looked at her.
“First time for what?”
“First time I’ve felt this.” She touched her chest. “First time I’ve felt like I wasn’t broken.”
I reached up. Touched her face.
“You’re not broken. You’re just afraid.”
She looked at me. Really looked. Her eyes glistened.
