The knock changed everything.

I sat on that couch for what felt like hours, my skirt still bunched around my hips, my thighs still warm from her mouth, my heart still hammering against my ribs. I could hear Chi-Chi’s voice through the door—low, calm, professional. Discussing budget forms. Deadlines. The Dean’s expectations.

She sounded like a different person. Like the girl who’d just had her fingers on the edge of my underwear had evaporated into thin air.

When she finally closed the door and turned back to me, her eyes were different. Softer. Almost apologetic.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “That was ... bad timing.”

I pulled my skirt down. My hands were shaking.

“It’s okay,” I lied.

She walked over, knelt in front of me again. Took my hands.

“It’s not okay. I don’t want our first time to be interrupted by some lecturer’s errand boy. I want you to have all of me. Undivided.”

I looked at her. At the sincerity in her eyes. At the way she was still holding my hands like I was something precious.

“When?” I asked.

“Tomorrow. After your last lecture. My place.”

She kissed my forehead. Gentle. Then she stood and helped me up.

“Go,” she said. “Before someone sees you leaving my office at this hour.”

I walked out into the evening air. The campus was quiet—students heading to the cafeteria, the library, the fellowship hall. I passed them like a ghost.

My body was still buzzing.

The next morning, I walked into the dining hall and found Sarah already seated, her tray piled high with fried yams and a plastic cup of Milo. She waved me over with the kind of enthusiasm that made me suspicious.

“Amara! Come, come. I have something to tell you.”

I sat down slowly. My appetite was gone. I pushed my tray aside.

“What is it?”

Sarah leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

“Chi-Chi. You know she’s been here since her first year, right? Hall executive, top of her class, everybody respects her.”

I nodded, my throat tight.

“Well,” Sarah continued, “she had a girlfriend before. Final year student. Economics. Beautiful girl. They were ... you know. Together.”

My stomach clenched.

“When the girl graduated, she left. Just like that. Didn’t even say goodbye properly.” Sarah shook her head. “Chi-Chi cried for two weeks. Two weeks, Amara. I heard she locked herself in her room and didn’t come out. People were worried.”

I stared at my untouched food. Something cold was spreading through my chest.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

Sarah shrugged, but her eyes were sharp.

“Because you look at her the way she used to look at that girl. And I don’t want you to be the next one she cries over.”

She stood, picked up her tray, and walked away.
