Sunday morning came with the prep bell and the smell of boiled eggs from the tuck shop. I woke up with my rosary tangled in my fingers and a strange ache between my thighs that I refused to name.
Sarah was already up, her blue bucket clattering as she headed for the bathroom.
“Village girl,” she called over her shoulder, “you better hurry. Sunday inspection is at eight. Warden Agnes will eat you alive if your bed isn’t straight.”
I scrambled. I folded my wrapper the way Mama taught me. I arranged my Bible and notebook on the small shelf. I checked the corners for dust—none. The Izal smell from the corridor was already seeping in, that sharp clean sting that meant the cleaners had passed.
Then the knock came.
Not Chi-Chi’s heavy rap. A soft one. Two taps.
I opened the door.
She stood there in her hostel president uniform—white polo, blue skirt, a plastic badge pinned to her chest that said: HEAD GIRL: HOSTEL B.
Her hair was pulled back tight, and she looked like she hadn’t slept. There were shadows under her eyes.
But her mouth curved when she saw me.
“Good morning, fresher.”
“Good morning, Chi-Chi.”
She stepped inside like she owned the room. Sarah was still in the bathroom, singing some gospel song off-key. Chi-Chi walked to my bed, ran her hand over the sheets, nodded.
“Passable,” she said. “But Warden Agnes is a demon. She’ll check the corners. The edges. The way you fold.”
She grabbed the corner of my sheet, pulled it sharp, tucked it under the mattress with one swift movement. Her arms flexed. I watched the muscles move under her skin.
“She also checks lockers,” Chi-Chi continued, opening mine without asking.
Inside: my wrappers, my jeans, the small pouch of groundnuts, Mama’s Bible, and a packet of Bournvita I’d smuggled in.
“Not bad,” she said. “But this locker”—she tapped the back panel—”comes loose. You can hide things here.”
She pulled the thin wood. It gave way easily, revealing a small hollow space.
“Every girl knows this,” she said. “But freshmen don’t. Now you do.”
She pushed it back into place. Her hand lingered on the metal edge, then dropped.
“You don’t wear perfume,” she said. “Good. I hate perfume. Smells like the girls who try too hard.”
She turned to face me. Her eyes scanned my face slowly, deliberately, like she was reading a text she wanted to memorize.
“I like how you smell.”
Her voice dropped. Low. Private.
She leaned in.
Just slightly.
Her nose almost touched my neck. I felt her breath—warm, soft, a small puff against my skin. She inhaled. A long, slow breath. Like she was drinking something expensive.
I froze. My hands clenched at my sides.
She stayed there for three heartbeats. I counted them. Then she stepped back.
“Your bed is near the window,” she said, her voice normal again, like nothing had happened. “That’s good. The moon will wake you.”
She moved to the window, pulled the curtain aside. Morning light flooded in.
“And I visit at night.”
She looked at me over her shoulder. A slow smile spread across her face.
“So keep the window slightly open. And don’t lock the door.”
