The fever came without warning.

One moment I was fine. The next, my bones were on fire. My skin was cold. My head was heavy. My stomach was empty and full at the same time.

I woke up in the sick bay. White walls. White sheets. The smell of Izal and antiseptic. The hum of the generator outside. I did not remember how I got there. I did not remember falling.

Sarah was there. She sat on a plastic chair by the window. Her phone was in her hand. Her face was tight. She looked at me when I opened my eyes. She did not smile.

“You’re awake,” she said.

“What happened?”

“Fever. Malaria, probably. You collapsed in the dining hall. They brought you here.”

I tried to sit up. My head spun. I fell back against the pillow.

“Don’t move,” Sarah said. “The nurse said you need rest.”

I closed my eyes. The room spun. My skin burned. My teeth chattered.

“Chi-Chi,” I whispered. “Where is Chi-Chi?”

Sarah did not answer. I opened my eyes. She was looking at the window. Her jaw was tight.

“She’s not here,” Sarah said. “She’s not coming.”

I closed my eyes again. I did not believe her.

The hours passed. I did not know how many. I drifted in and out. The fever took me. The dreams took me. I saw my mother. I saw the rosary. I saw Chi-Chi’s face. She was dancing. She was smiling. She was walking away.

I tried to call her name. My voice was gone. My throat was dry. My body was weak.

The door opened.

I heard footsteps. Soft. Measured. I knew them. I had memorized them.

“Amara.”

I opened my eyes.

Chi-Chi.

She stood by the bed. She wore a simple white blouse. Her hair was pulled back. Her face was tired. Her eyes were red.

“You came,” I whispered.

“Of course I came.”

She sat on the edge of the bed. Her hand found my forehead. Her palm was cool. Soft.

“You’re burning,” she said.

“I’m cold.”

She laughed. It was a small, hollow sound, like she had been holding it in for too long.

“That’s the fever.”

She reached into her bag. Pulled out a handkerchief. White. Clean. She wet it with water from the bottle on the table. She wiped my face. Slow. Soft. Gentle.

Her fingers traced down my cheek. Her thumb touched my lower lip. Checking my temperature. Checking my breath. Checking me.

She did not take her hand away.

I opened my eyes wider. I saw her face. Her dark eyes. Her full lips. Her jaw tight with worry. Her brow furrowed with fear.

She looked raw. Desperate. Like she had been crying.

“Don’t leave me,” I whispered.

She leaned closer. Her forehead touched mine. Her breath was warm on my lips.

“I won’t,” she said. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She brushed my hair back. Her fingers grazed my neck. Soft. Gentle. Like I was made of glass.

I shivered. Not from the cold. From her.

“Chi-Chi,” I said.

“Yes?”

“Stay with me.”

“I’m here. I’m not leaving.”

She pulled back. Looked at me. Her thumb traced my cheekbone. Her eyes searched mine.

“Sarah told me not to come,” she said. “She said I would make it worse. She said people would talk.”

“But you came anyway.”

She smiled. Sad. Tender.

“I don’t care what people think,” she said. “I only care about you.”

She reached down. Took my hand. Her fingers laced through mine.

“I was so scared,” she said. “When I heard you collapsed. I ran. I ran the whole way.”

“Chi-Chi—”

“I thought I lost you. I thought I would lose you before I even had you.”

I squeezed her hand. Weak. But I squeezed.

“You’re not losing me,” I said. “I’m right here.”

She lifted my hand to her lips. Kissed my knuckles. One by one. Soft. Slow.
