The drums started at noon.
I heard them from my hostel room. The low thud of the talking drum. The sharp bite of the sekere. The whistle of flutes cutting through the Harmattan air. Cultural day. The one day of the year when St. Catherine’s remembered it was Nigerian.
I didn’t want to go. Sarah had been giving me that look all morning. The look that said I know what you did. I know who you are. Chidi had stopped speaking to me entirely. He crossed to the other side of the dining hall when he saw me coming.
But the drums pulled me. The way they always pulled me. The way they pulled everyone.
I walked to the field. The grass was brown from the dry season. The sky was a pale blue that hurt to look at. Students everywhere. Some in traditional attire. Some in jeans and t-shirts. Some holding phones. Some holding plates of jollof rice.
I found a spot near the back. Away from Sarah. Away from Chidi. Away from the whispers I could feel crawling up my spine.
Then I saw her.
Chi-Chi.
She was on the field. In the center of the circle. She wore a wrapper tied low on her hips. A blouse that left her shoulders bare. Her hair was loose. Her neck was long. Her arms were open.
The drums changed. Slower. Deeper. The beat settled into her bones.
She moved.
Her hips rolled. Slow. Controlled. Deliberate. Each movement a question. Each sway an answer. Her waist curved like water. Her lower back dipped like a valley. Her chest rose and fell like she was breathing for both of us.
I couldn’t look away.
My eyes followed her. The curve of her waist. The dip of her back. The way her shoulders moved when she turned. The way her feet planted on the ground like she owned it.
The other dancers moved around her. They were good. But they were not her. They were background. Shadows. She was the sun.
Her hips moved lower. Slower. The crowd cheered. I did not cheer. I could not speak. My throat was dry. My mouth was open. My breath was shallow.
My thighs pressed together. A familiar heat bloomed between my legs. I could feel it spreading. Warm. Wet. Unstoppable.
My nipples were hard under my uniform. I could feel them pressing against the thin fabric. I crossed my arms over my chest. Too late. The damage was done.
A girl next to me noticed. Her eyes dropped to my chest. Then to my face. She leaned toward her friend. Whispered something. The friend looked at me. Her eyes were sharp. Judging.
Another girl. Another whisper. Another look.
I heard them. Not the words. The tone. The accusation. The disgust.
I didn’t care.
I could not look away.
Chi-Chi turned. Her eyes found mine. She did not smile. She did not wave. She just looked. Her hips still moving. Her body still swaying.
She knew I was watching. She knew what she was doing to me.
She did it anyway.
The drums built. Faster. Louder. The crowd clapped. Chi-Chi moved faster. Her hips spinning. Her arms reaching. Her head thrown back.
I felt it in my chest. In my stomach. Low. Deep. A pulse that matched the drums.
I wanted to touch her. Hold her. Pull her off that field and into the dark where no one could see.
The drums stopped.
The crowd cheered.
Chi-Chi bowed. Her chest rose and fell. Her skin was wet with sweat. Her hair was stuck to her forehead. She was beautiful. She was devastating. She was mine.
She walked off the field. The other dancers followed. The crowd dispersed. The chatter rose.
