The confessional smelled like wood polish and old incense.
I knelt on the hard wooden kneeler, my palms pressed together, my eyes fixed on the lattice screen that separated me from Father Michael. Behind it, I could hear him breathing. Slow. Steady. The rhythm of a man who had heard every sin imaginable.
“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,” I whispered. “It has been three weeks since my last confession.”
“Go on, my child.”
I opened my mouth. Closed it. The words were stuck in my throat like fish bones.
“Father, I...” I swallowed. “I think of a girl too much.”
Silence. Then his voice, calm and measured. “A girl?”
“Yes, Father. I can’t stop thinking about her. I see her in chapel. I see her in the dining hall. I see her when I close my eyes.”
“Is she a temptation to you?”
I almost laughed. Temptation. That word was too small. Too gentle. What I felt for Chi-Chi wasn’t temptation. It was a flood. A fire. A force that had taken over my body and refused to let go.
“Yes, Father,” I said. “She is a temptation.”
“Pray,” he said. “Fast. You are young. These feelings will pass.”
Will they? I wanted to ask. Will they pass when I can still feel her fingers on my skin? Will they pass when I wake up with her name on my lips?
But I didn’t ask. I just nodded. “Yes, Father.”
“For your penance, say three Hail Marys and three Our Fathers. And avoid occasions of sin.”
“Yes, Father.”
I crossed myself. Stood. Walked out of the confessional.
The chapel was empty. The candles flickered. The afternoon light streamed through the stained glass, painting patterns on the stone floor.
I knelt at the altar. Closed my eyes.
Hail Mary, full of grace...
But the words wouldn’t come. Behind my eyes, I saw her. Chi-Chi. Her dark eyes. Her full lips. The way she’d looked at me in the library. The way her hand had found mine under the table.
Hail Mary, full of grace...
I saw her in her office. Her hand on my waist. Her breath on my neck. The almost-kiss that had left me burning for days.
Hail Mary, full of grace...
I saw her in the chapel. The night study. Her mouth on mine. Her hand under my blouse. Her fingers on my breast.
My thighs pressed together. A familiar heat bloomed between my legs.
I opened my eyes. The crucifix stared down at me. Jesus hung there, eyes closed, body broken. He knew. He knew everything.
I finished the prayer. My voice was steady. My body was not.
Amen.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
Sarah was snoring. The generator hummed. The window was open, and the night air was cool on my skin.
But inside me, I was burning.
I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling. My hands were at my sides. My thighs were pressed together. I could feel my pulse between my legs.
I thought of her.
I thought of her smile. Her laugh. The way her eyes darkened when she looked at me.
I thought of her hand on my waist. Her thumb tracing circles on my hip.
I thought of her mouth. The way she kissed me. The way she tasted.
My hand moved.
It was slow at first. Tentative. Like I was testing something I wasn’t sure I should touch.
My fingers found the edge of my underwear. Slid beneath.
I was wet. So wet. I could feel it on my fingers. The slick heat of my own wanting.
I thought of Chi-Chi’s hands on my knees. Her mouth on my thigh.
I thought of her fingers tracing the edge of my underwear. The way she’d looked at me. The way she’d said “Tell me what you want.”
My fingers found the place that ached. The place that had been aching since I first saw her in the chapel.
I pressed. Circled. Slow at first. Then faster.
I thought of her mouth on my neck. Her teeth grazing my skin. The low sound she made when I kissed her back.
