Chapter 1: The Rosary and the Torch

Romance Sex Story: Chapter 1: The Rosary and the Torch - Amara, 19, arrives at St. Catherine's Nursing Institute with a Bible and a Ghana-must-go. She wants to be a good altar girl. Chi-Chi, 21, final year Hostel Rep, has other plans. She stares too long. Stands too close. Knows exactly when Amara's breath catches. In a hostel where Warden Agnes watches everything and NEPA takes light every night, Amara is trying not to sin. But some sins feel like prayer.

Mama pressed that rosary into my palm like she was transferring her own heartbeat. “Amara, you are going to St. Catherine’s to read, not to be read. Keep your knees closed and your eyes on God.” She kissed my forehead three times — one for each person in the Holy Trinity — and then she waved me off at the park like I was going to war.

Maybe I was.

The Ghana-must-go bag sat on my lap the entire six hours from Enugu to Ibadan. Blue and red stripes, zipper that sticks at the corner. Inside: three wrappers, two pairs of jeans, my Bible with the cracked leather spine, and a small pouch of groundnuts Mama said would “keep the hunger away.” It didn’t. By the time the rusty bus coughed into St. Catherine’s gate, my stomach was singing highlife.

St. Catherine’s Catholic University. The name sounds holy. It looks holy too — white walls, a giant crucifix at the entrance, and the chapel rising in the middle like God himself dropped it there. But the air? The air smells like girls. Perfume, sweat, pressed powder, and the unmistakable sting of Izal disinfectant that every boarding school in Nigeria knows by heart.

Hostel B. Room 12.

I pushed the door open and there she was — Sarah. My roommate. She sat on the lower bunk like a queen on a throne, legs crossed, Agege bread in one hand, phone in the other. Her hair was packed high, edges laid like she was going to a wedding.

“Ah, so you’re the village girl they sent,” she said, chewing loud. “Welcome. Your bed is the one with the sagging mattress. The cockroaches there know me already, so they’ll be happy to meet you.”

I didn’t laugh. I just dropped my bag and started unpacking, my fingers trembling. She watched me like I was a documentary.

Where are you from?

Enugu.

“Ah. Coal city girl.” She bit her bread. “You look like you pray a lot.”

“I do.”

“Good. You’ll need it here.”

That night, I went to evening mass. It wasn’t a choice — the school rules said every fresher must attend for the first two weeks. I wore my best blouse, the white one with the small lace collar, and I sat in the third row from the back so nobody would notice me.

But somebody noticed.

I felt it before I saw it. A heat. A pressure on the back of my neck. I turned slightly — just enough to see the second row on the left. There was a girl. Tall. Dark in a way that made you remember night. She wore a black turtleneck under her cardigan, even though Ibadan was boiling. Her hair was twisted back, and her lips were full and parted like she’d just stopped mid-sentence.

She was staring at me.
