Chanelle sat at the reception desk, her gaze fixed on the monitor while her face betrayed a welling sadness, as if tears might spill at any moment. When she noticed Stephen standing in the doorway, her lips tightened with clear irritation. Avoiding his eyes, she deliberately turned away.
Stephen advanced toward the counter, his voice softening as he called out to Chanelle. Though she kept her gaze averted, he persisted gently, “Chanelle?” Her throat constricted visibly, while Stephen’s hand trembled slightly; he rubbed the back of his neck with restless fingers as he repeated her name once more.
“Nothing happened!” Stephen insisted, his voice quavering with desperation. Chanelle’s glare burned into him, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “I swear,” he pleaded softly. “Then why the fuck is everyone saying it did?” she retorted sharply, her words laced with bitter accusation.
“Naomi,” he began hesitantly, though Chanelle scoffed and returned her focus to the monitor. “You just couldn’t wait, could you? You wanted her from day one, and when she showed a little interest, you seized your chance, didn’t you?” Shaking his head vigorously, he countered with strained conviction, “Of course not. It never happened—none of that occurred. She was orchestrating something and manipulated me as part of her scheme; I simply don’t know what it was.”
He edged closer, lowering his voice to a hushed murmur. “This family—they’re fucked up. They used me as some kind of weapon, and you have to trust me on this.” His words tumbled out in a frantic plea. “I’m absolutely crazy about you, Chanelle. I would never risk ruining what we have—I had no say in any of it.”
Chanelle shifted toward him, her voice softening almost imperceptibly as she asked with cautious skepticism, “You didn’t sleep with her?” Stephen met her gaze directly, replying with earnest conviction, “Absolutely not.”
“Look who it is,” James announced with a mocking clap, just as Stephen straightened up, visibly flustered by Chanelle’s interrogation. With a malicious grin spreading across his face, James approached them. Chanelle kept her head lowered, eyes fixed on the monitor as she tracked his movements from the corner of her vision. “If it isn’t the playboy driver,” he drawled, slinging an arm around Stephen’s shoulders and leaning uncomfortably close to his face. “What the fuck were you doing at my club last night, bwoy?”
“Naomi ... Ms. Sinclair instructed me to take her there, sir” Stephen stammered, his voice trembling as James fixed him with a look of utter contempt. “What the fuck is that bitch of a sister scheming now?” he spat.
“I don’t know, sir, I was simply following orders,” Stephen replied, his composure wavering as James recoiled with disgust. “Following orders?” James mocked, his voice dripping with scorn as he glanced toward Chanelle incredulously. “Is sticking your cock up her pussy considered following orders now?” The crude remark hung in the air as Chanelle’s irritation became unmistakably evident. Stephen met James’ challenging stare without flinching. “Nothing like that occurred, sir,” he insisted firmly, his eyes locked on James’.
As James released his grip with a mocking sneer and sauntered away, Stephen’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. Chanelle turned to him, her gaze softening as she noticed his raw vulnerability. “Stephen,” she murmured quietly, prompting him to meet her eyes. He drew a deep breath before confessing in a trembling voice, “They’re going to ruin me, Chanelle.” With those words, he shook his head slowly, the weight of impending doom settling heavily upon him.
“Let’s discuss at lunch,” Chanelle murmured gently. Stephen offered a silent nod, gratitude flickering in his eyes before he turned away toward the exit, seeking solace in the open air.
Damien strode through the entrance, his presence immediately commanding the room. Stephen stiffened visibly, blurting out, “Mr. Sinclair!” in a strained voice. Damien fixed him with a steely glare before offering a curt, “Stephen.” Without further acknowledgment, he brushed past the driver and approached Chanelle’s desk. “Good morning, sir,” Chanelle greeted politely as Stephen lingered nearby observing their interaction. “Is Naomi in her office?” Damien inquired sharply. Before Chanelle could finish suggesting she locate Naomi for him—murmuring, “She’s around, sir; would you like me to...”—Damien cut her off abruptly and marched toward the elevators without waiting for a response.
Chanelle watched Damien stride away, his posture radiating authority even in retreat. Turning slightly, she cast a questioning glance at Stephen, whose furrowed brow mirrored her own bewilderment at the abrupt exchange.
Naomi’s office
Kwame sat in Naomi’s office, his laptop perched on the edge of her desk. Naomi reached for a box of white chocolate, plucked a piece, and placed it in her mouth. She extended the box toward Kwame, who declined with a polite shake of his head. “No thank you,” he said, “I’m watching my calories.” Naomi raised an eyebrow at his refusal before shrugging and replying, “Suit yourself.”
The heavy oak door swung open abruptly, and Damien stepped into the office with purposeful strides. Naomi glanced up from her desk just as her father entered, his commanding presence filling the room. “Naomi, a moment!” he demanded without preamble. With cool composure, Naomi replied evenly, “Dad! Have you met Kwame? He’s Tom’s replacement.” Kwame immediately rose from his seat and extended his hand in greeting. Damien accepted the handshake briskly before turning back to his daughter. “If you don’t mind, Kwame,” he interjected, “I need to speak with my daughter.” Nodding politely, Kwame gathered his laptop and excused himself from the room.
Damien stared hard at Naomi, his irritation palpable despite her apparent indifference. “Stephen?” he questioned pointedly, referencing her driver at the club. “What is this? From one white man to another?” he added with a cutting edge to his tone.
Naomi popped another chocolate into her mouth, her gaze fixed on her father. “I do enjoy my white chocolate,” she remarked casually, extending the box toward Damien. A knowing smirk played on her lips as she continued, “I know you prefer your dark ones, but I suspect you occasionally indulge in that naughty white chocolate on the side.” Damien’s eyebrows knitted together at the insinuation.
“Are you insinuating something?” Damien snapped, his voice tight with anger. Naomi feigned innocence and drew back slightly, offering a playful smile. “It’s just chocolate, Dad,” she said lightly, though her tone did little to ease the tension. Damien leaned forward, planting his palms firmly on her desk as he glared at her. “Don’t play games with me, girl!” he warned sharply. “You don’t want to make me your enemy.”
Naomi slowly rose from her chair, locking fierce eyes with her father. “Or what?” she challenged, voice edged with defiance. “Dad, will there be someone waiting to run me over?” Damien’s eyes widened in stunned disbelief as Naomi held his gaze, unshed tears glinting in her hardened stare.
Damien recoiled as he demanded, “What do you mean?” Naomi thrust out a trembling finger, jabbing it toward his face to punctuate each seething word. “You killed Tom,” she spat venomously.
Tears clouded Naomi’s vision as she choked out, “You looked me in the eyes and told me he was like a son to you.” Her lips quivered with each ragged breath. “My own father, took him away from me.” The words seethed through clenched teeth, her anguish palpable in every syllable.
“I believed you were the only one I could ever really trust and rely on,” Naomi declared, her voice trembling with betrayal. Turning away, Damien exhaled heavily before replying in a low tone, “There are things you simply don’t comprehend.”
“Don’t do anything stupid, Naomi,” he cautioned, his gaze boring into hers. She lowered herself gracefully into her chair, resting her elbows on the polished surface and intertwining her fingers. “It’s far too late for that now,” she retorted coolly, her composure unwavering despite the simmering tension between them.
Damien strode purposefully toward the door, pausing briefly to glance back at Naomi. Her gaze remained fixed on the polished surface of her desk, her posture rigid with unspoken resentment. With a final, heavy sigh, he turned and exited the room, leaving behind the suffocating weight of their confrontation.
With trembling hands, Naomi reached for the sleek office phone and swiftly dialed Kwame’s extension. Her voice, though strained from the recent confrontation, carried a decisive edge as she commanded, “Kwame! Let’s head out to lunch—bring your laptop.” Without waiting for a response, she firmly replaced the receiver.
Crimson Leaf Cafe: 12:30 PM
Stephen waited alone until Chanelle approached. He offered a tentative smile as she settled into the seat across from him, placing her handbag beside her. “Are you alright?” he asked gently. Chanelle nodded, her gaze drifting downward as she avoided meeting his eyes. “I’m fine,” she replied softly.
She looked up and said, “Tell me what happened.” After a brief nod, he explained how Naomi had been behaving strangely. He recounted how she had insinuated that something improper was happening between him and Naomi, seemingly to provoke Daryl at the Velvet Den. The conversation ended with Naomi’s unsettling comment about expecting everyone at work to hear the news soon, as if the entire situation had been carefully orchestrated.
He recounted how on the drive back, Naomi had reverted to her normal self. “It was all an act,” he insisted, his voice tinged with bitterness. “I was just cannon fodder in whatever game she’s playing.” He extended his hand toward Chanelle’s, hoping to offer comfort. But she flinched away from his touch, leaving him bewildered. “Don’t you believe me?” he asked quietly, searching her face for any sign of trust.
She shook her head slowly, her brow furrowing with uncertainty. “I honestly don’t know what to think anymore,” she admitted, her voice laced with confusion. “Everyone’s whispering about it, and just before I arrived here, Naomi passed me in the hallway with her attorney. She gave me this strange, knowing look—almost like she was mocking me.”
Stephen’s voice softened, heavy with vulnerability. “We’ve only just begun to know one another,” he admitted, his words measured yet earnest. “Yet yesterday held both the most wonderful and the most dreadful moments of my entire life. I can’t bear the thought of abandoning what we might have—before it’s even truly started.”
Chanelle offered a strained smile. “I don’t either—I truly enjoyed our time together—but you’re her driver,” she said, her voice edged with resignation. “She’ll always be summoning you.” Stephen acknowledged the painful truth with a slow nod, his expression mirroring her conflicted emotions.
He paused, his gaze steady and resolute. “I’ve considered every angle,” he murmured, “and I’ve made up my mind—I will resign.” Chanelle’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What?” she exclaimed softly as he continued, his tone grave and deliberate. “The events of last night felt too calculated to be mere coincidence; Naomi had never behaved that way until I met you.”
Chanelle protested, her voice trembling with concern, “I don’t want you to do that.” Stephen shook his head firmly, his resolve unwavering. “It doesn’t matter,” he insisted softly. “Even if things had been different, I wouldn’t change my decision. I’ll find other work, but I still want to see you—if you feel the same way.”
Stephen kept his gaze fixed on the table as Chanelle leaned forward and gently rested her hands atop his. He lifted his eyes to meet hers, and she whispered with quiet sincerity, “I do.”
Raw Couture: 2:00 PM
Stephen entered the elevator, releasing a weary exhale as the doors closed. He pressed the button for the fifth floor with determination and watched the numbers light up one by one. Upon reaching the upper level, he exited and proceeded briskly along the corridor when James suddenly stepped into his path. “Motherfucker, what are you doing here?” James demanded. Stephen attempted to continue past him without acknowledgment, but James blocked his way again. “Are you fucking ignoring me?” he challenged. Stephen paused briefly before responding in a measured tone, “Yes, I am.”
“You know I could fire your white ass,” James snapped as Stephen closed the distance, his voice dripping with contempt. “Then do it,” Stephen retorted coldly, stepping nearer still, “so I could be done with your family bullshit.” James’ brow knotted in anger as he absorbed the defiance in Stephen’s tone.
James smirked, his lip curling with disdain. “Oh, the tough n**** are we?” he taunted. Stephen rolled his eyes dismissively and retorted in a cold tone, “Are you going to fire me or what, James? Where’s the action?”
James shoved his palm against Stephen’s chest, holding him in place as he sneered. Stephen met James’ glare without flinching, his jaw tightening as James continued with a vicious edge to his voice. “You know what? I never bought that shit about you fucking my sister—but what about that sweet piece of ass down at reception? Bet she’d make a fine addition to my club.” Rage flashed in Stephen’s eyes at the crude remark.
Stephen seized James by the collar, twisting fabric fiercely as he propelled him backward. The glass partition shuddered violently from the impact, a thunderous crack reverberating through the hallway. James snarled, his face contorting with rage, “Get your cracker ass hands off me.” Witnesses froze mid-step as the commotion erupted around them. Stephen’s fury burned brighter than ever as he bellowed, “You fucking touch her, you’re dead!”
Naomi stepped forward, her sharp cry cutting through the chaos “Stephen!”. She had just emerged from the elevator with Kwame at her side when she spotted Stephen’s confrontation with James. Turning toward the fracas, bewilderment etched itself across Naomi’s face as she struggled to process the scene unfolding before her.
Kwame stepped between them, firmly placing a hand on Stephen’s shoulder. “Let him go,” he urged calmly, locking eyes with Stephen as he detected a flicker of reluctant comprehension. “We can discuss this privately in my office.”
James spat out, “That’s assault caught on camera, motherfucker.” Stephen released his grip on James’ collar and strode past Kwame and Naomi, who still wore a bewildered expression. She turned to James and demanded sharply, “What the fuck did you do?” James adjusted his collar as he retorted, “I’m going to kill that fucker.” Naomi closed the distance between them and warned icily, “You touch him, James, and you’ll regret it.”
Stephen marched toward the elevator, his movements stiff with barely contained fury. Naomi bolted after him, heels clicking rapidly across the polished floor. She reached out just as the doors slid shut with a decisive hiss, her fingertips grazing cold metal. Through the narrowing gap, she glimpsed the hollow vacancy in his gaze—a chilling emptiness that sent a jolt of unease through her chest. Fumbling with her phone, she jabbed at his number. It rang once, twice, then clicked to voicemail. “What the fuck is going on?” she muttered under her breath.
Naomi descended to the ground floor, her heels clicking sharply against the marble as she approached the reception desk. Chanelle watched intently as Naomi rushed toward the exit, stepping briefly outside to scan the area for Stephen before returning inside. Striding purposefully toward Chanelle’s station, Naomi demanded tersely, “Where did he go?”
“He went to see you, ma’am, to hand in his resignation,” Chanelle explained calmly as Naomi’s expression twisted with frustration. “Obviously you two discussed it—did you convince him to quit?” Naomi pressed accusingly. Chanelle shook her head firmly. “It was entirely his choice,” she clarified.
Naomi shook her head vehemently. “This all started because of you,” she accused, thrusting a finger toward Chanelle’s face. The sudden accusation struck Chanelle speechless; her mouth fell open in disbelief. “Ma’am?” she managed weakly, utterly bewildered by the unjust blame.
“Stephen has never once abandoned his post like this before,” Naomi spat, her voice trembling with outrage. “Something set him off, and coincidentally, you’re suddenly in the middle of it all when he starts attacking people.” Chanelle stared back in stunned disbelief. “Attacking? What are you talking about?”
Naomi’s voice crackled with fury as she snapped, “Call him back—he obviously won’t listen to me!” Before Chanelle could respond, Naomi cut her off, her tone turning threatening. “Get him back here and make it clear that your job depends on it.” Chanelle recoiled slightly, inhaling a sharp breath at the unprovoked ultimatum.
Stephen sat on the bus, its gentle sway lulling him into a quiet reverie. His phone vibrated in his pocket. Pulling it out, he saw Chanelle’s name flash across the screen and smiled softly. Answering with a calm “Chanelle,” he was met with her voice, strained and frantic as she cried out, “Stephen!” His brow furrowed at her panic. “What’s wrong?” he asked urgently. Chanelle paused for a tense moment before replying, her words clipped and fearful. “It’s Naomi—she wants you to come back ... or I’m fired.”
Naomi’s Office: 4:00 PM
Kwame frowned, his voice measured as he posed the question. “What are we going to do about this assault on James?” Naomi dismissed the concern with a casual flick of her wrist. “We don’t do anything—knowing James, he probably deserved it.” Kwame pressed further, uncertainty coloring his tone. “Are you sure?” Just then, Naomi’s phone buzzed insistently. She raised a finger to still Kwame’s inquiry and answered in a calm, controlled tone. “Stephen?” On the other end, Stephen’s voice came through tense and accusatory. “You threatened to fire Chanelle?” Naomi brushed off the accusation with a dismissive wave. “Oh, it was just an empty threat—I wasn’t really going to do that. But what I really want to know is what the fuck happened to you.”
Stephen’s voice carried a quiet resignation as he explained, “I was coming to you to tell you I was going to resign.” Naomi regarded him coolly before responding, “Why?” He paused briefly, choosing his words carefully. “Because of yesterday—at the club and all the gossip—and James taunting me.”
Naomi questioned sharply, “Why did you attack James?” Stephen hesitated, his voice laden with remorse. “It was pure impulse,” he admitted. “He made a crude remark about Chanelle being an addition to that club ... I simply lost control.” He paused, struggling to compose himself. “I never intended for this to happen.”
“Just get back and we’ll talk,” Naomi commanded. Stephen’s voice trembled as he countered, “I can’t come back now, I went too far.” He swallowed hard, adding softly, “I don’t want Chanelle punished for my actions.”
Naomi replied with cool assurance, “She won’t be punished, and I’m not releasing you—Stephen, I need you. Don’t worry about James; he can’t touch you.” A heavy silence stretched across the line before Naomi continued firmly, “Be waiting by the car at the end of the workday.” With that, she ended the call.
Naomi exhaled with a satisfied breath as she turned to Kwame, her tone brisk and assured. “Now, regarding our earlier discussion at lunch,” she prompted, and Kwame responded with a deliberate nod of agreement.
Damien sat fuming in the back of his car as Jacob steered through traffic. In the rearview mirror, Jacob glimpsed Damien’s simmering anger before returning his focus to the road ahead, maintaining a cautious silence.
Raw Couture: Entrance 7:00 PM
Stephen lingered near the Mercedes, his gaze tracking Naomi’s expected arrival. Employees streamed out from Raw Couture, their figures blurring in the fading evening light. As Chanelle emerged, Stephen drew in a sudden, sharp breath. She moved toward him with purpose, her jacket neatly secured and her bag slung securely over one shoulder.
Chanelle smiled warmly as she approached, her voice soft. “You’re back,” she observed gently. Stephen gave a slow nod, his expression subdued. “She didn’t give me much choice,” he murmured quietly. Reaching up, Chanelle tenderly brushed her fingers along his cheek before leaning in closer; her lips grazed his lightly as his eyes fluttered shut.
Stephen opened his eyes, his whisper barely audible. “I’m so sorry, Chanelle,” he murmured. She offered a gentle shake of her head, her tone soothing yet firm. “Don’t worry about it—just be careful,” she advised before adding softly, “Call me when you finish your shift.” A grateful smile touched Stephen’s lips as his eyes glistened faintly with emotion. “You can count on it,” he promised.
As Stephen’s gaze drifted beyond Chanelle, he noticed Naomi approaching in the distance. Sensing his distraction, Chanelle turned and followed his line of sight toward Naomi, who glanced briefly at Stephen. With a final gesture of reassurance, Chanelle leaned close to whisper in his ear, “I believe you 100%,” she murmured before pulling away. Stephen nodded gratefully in response. Chanelle then turned and walked off into the evening, heading home.
Stephen moved to open the rear door, his voice steady as he addressed her. “Ma’am.” Naomi approached with a detached air. “Thank you, Stephen,” she replied crisply as she settled into the plush leather seat. With a curt nod, he closed the door and made his way around to the driver’s side.
The Velvet Den: 10:00 PM
In the hidden chamber at the back, a circular table dominated the space. Smoke from cigars lingered in the air, drifting lazily between the seated members. James studied his cards intently while sliding a stack of bills into the growing pile at the center of the table.
