James’ House

James’ phone rang insistently as he lay sprawled face down across the bed, his bare torso exposed above the rumpled sheets and his boxers askew. Slowly, his body stirred; he lifted his head with a groan, arm extending to snatch the buzzing device from the nightstand. “Yeah, what?” he grumbled into the receiver, his voice thick with sleep.

Evelyn’s voice pierced the morning silence, firm and insistent through the phone. “James, get up! You need to get to the office,” she commanded as he frowned, his confusion evident in his raspy reply. “What, ma?” he mumbled, struggling to clear the fog from his mind. “There’s a meeting,” she explained, her tone brooking no argument. James let out a bitter chuckle, shaking his head at the absurdity of it all. “Have you forgotten?” he shot back sarcastically. “Naomi fucked me over—I’m not part of that shit anymore.”

“It’s for everyone, James—you have a lot to lose if you don’t show up,” Evelyn insisted firmly. James scoffed bitterly, replying, “I’ve already lost everything.” Evelyn paused before delivering the crucial blow: “Not yet. Naomi couldn’t strip you of your shares in the company.” At those words, James bolted upright on the bed, his gaze sharpening with sudden interest. “You mean I still own my shares?” he pressed urgently as Evelyn confirmed.

“I’ll be there, ma,” he said, ending the call. Sitting motionless on the edge of the bed, he nodded slowly as a smirk spread across his face. “You had me fucking fooled, you bitch,” he muttered under his breath.

Chanelle’s Apartment

Chanelle leaned toward the mirror near her front door, carefully applying her lipstick. Straightening up, she smoothed the color by pressing her lips together. Turning sideways, she admired her new outfit—a sleek white blouse paired with a purple skirt and matching jacket—before slipping on her heels. Just as she finished the final touches, a knock sounded at the door.

Chanelle moved to open the door and found Stephen standing there, looking dejected as he balanced on one crutch tucked under his right arm. With a sigh, he remarked, “You know how long I’ve been waiting?” Chanelle simply shrugged, flashing him a playful smirk as she replied, “I need to look beautiful.”

She grabbed her purse, slung it over her shoulder, and then Stephen offered his elbow. Chanelle looped her arm through his as he smiled warmly and murmured, “You’re always beautiful.” Leaning in, he brushed a light kiss on her cheek. They strolled along the apartment hallway together when Chanelle grinned playfully and added, “You know, you’ll have to start calling me ma’am from now on,” her eyes sparkling as she met his gaze.

“Yes, ma’am”

Raw Couture - Naomi’s Office

Seated at her desk, Naomi reviewed the documents in her hands while Kwame and Emily sat opposite her. The room remained silent until she flipped to the next page. Emily’s expression revealed a trace of concern as Naomi nodded thoughtfully. “We have quite a bit here,” she remarked. Kwame responded with quiet assurance, “The more, the better.” Shifting her gaze to Emily, Naomi asked pointedly, “What do you think?”

Emily exhaled slowly and answered, “I’m a little nervous about the whole thing.” She watched as Naomi glanced back at the papers in her hand. “I know,” Naomi acknowledged, “this is big and the shit will hit the fan, but we need to flush it out.” Kwame offered a quiet smirk. “So poetic,” he teased. Naomi shot him an arched eyebrow with a smirk of her own.

“We have many other statements from our previous employees; they have offered to help,” he said. Naomi looked at Emily, “Can you give us a moment?” she asked politely. Emily nodded and got up, exiting the office.

As Emily departed the office, Kwame shifted his attention back to Naomi. “What do you think—are we going too far with this?” she asked hesitantly. Kwame studied her with a knowing look. “It’s unlike you to second-guess yourself,” he remarked quietly. Naomi paused, her gaze drifting toward the window in contemplation. “Besides,” he continued gently, “you aren’t betraying anyone—you’re establishing the standard for basic human decency, no matter who they are.”

Chanelle stepped off the elevator onto the fifth floor, exhaling softly as she strode forward with purpose. Her head held high, each click of her heels echoed crisply down the corridor as she passed numerous offices. Through the transparent glass wall of her office, Evelyn observed Chanelle’s passage. Her eyes narrowed sharply, and she swiftly rose from her desk, moving toward the door and calling out in a firm tone, “Excuse me?” Startled by the abrupt summons, Chanelle paused mid-stride and turned to face Evelyn.

“Yes, Mrs. Sinclair,” Chanelle replied, her voice steady and assured as Evelyn approached. “What are you doing here?” Evelyn pressed sharply, her eyes narrowing at Chanelle’s unexpected presence on the executive floor. Chanelle blinked in confusion. “I’m sorry?” she asked, her brow furrowing slightly. With an impatient sigh, Evelyn clarified, “Shouldn’t you be down in reception?”

Chanelle smirked, “Do you even know my name?” she challenged. Evelyn retorted coolly, “Who the fuck cares,” before Chanelle countered, “Well, you should.” Evelyn’s eyes narrowed as Naomi’s voice suddenly cut through the tension from behind. “Is there a problem?” Naomi interjected smoothly as Chanelle turned to face her with a knowing smile. “No problem,” Chanelle explained calmly. “Mrs. Sinclair is unaware of my promotion—she was just telling me that I should know my place.”

Evelyn shot back indignantly, “I never said that! How dare you twist my words!” Chanelle remained unflappable, replying evenly, “You didn’t need to,” as Evelyn pivoted toward Naomi. “Are you simply going to stand by while she speaks to a board member with such insolence?” Naomi interjected calmly, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Chanelle,” she instructed smoothly, “why don’t you proceed to my office—we have much to discuss.” With a curt nod, Chanelle continued on her way.

Naomi glanced at Evelyn, her lips parting as if to speak, but then abruptly turned on her heel and strode toward her own office, leaving Evelyn to ponder the exchange with a troubled frown.

9:30 AM
Raw Couture - Lobby

James strutted into the lobby, his gaze locking onto the security guard stationed nearby. The guard watched him but made no move to intervene. A smug grin spread across James’s face as he muttered under his breath, “That’s right, bitch. I’m still here.”

Passing the reception area, James flashed a flirtatious wink at Tiffany. Her warm smile lingered as he strolled confidently toward the elevators.

Evelyn’s Office

“She’s up to something, Damien; I can feel it,” Evelyn murmured over the phone. “I’ll be at the meeting, Evelyn—we’ll know soon,” he responded, his voice edged with resolve. After a brief pause, Evelyn asked cautiously, “Have you heard from Jacob yet?” Damien hesitated before replying quietly, “No—and Maria hasn’t either. Something must have happened to him. I’ll see you at the office,” and with that, he ended the call. Evelyn set her phone on the desk and released a heavy sigh as her gaze drifted into empty space.

The door creaked open unexpectedly, and James swaggered in. “Hey ma,” he greeted casually, dropping into the seat opposite Evelyn. She turned her attention from the desk as he settled in with a satisfied smirk, his hands landing firmly on his knees. “So, what are we going to do?”

Naomi’s Office

Chanelle jotted notes in her notebook while Naomi spoke, pausing as her phone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at the screen, then lifted it to answer. “Well?” she demanded, listening intently before a slow smile spread across her face. “Good,” she said crisply, “I want you in as soon as possible.” With that, she ended the call and resumed her discussion with Naomi.

12:00 PM
Raw Couture - Conference Room

Evelyn, James, Kwame, Priya, and Damien were already seated around the long oval-shaped glass table when twelve noon came and went by a few minutes. Damien shifted restlessly in his chair as he glanced repeatedly at the clock ticking past the hour.

James spun idly in his leather chair, his restless movements betraying his impatience. Across the table, Kwame kept his forearms planted firmly on the polished surface, a closed file resting beneath them as he surveyed each attendee with a watchful eye. Evelyn sat rigidly, her arms folded tightly over her chest and her expression taut with irritation. Meanwhile, Priya fidgeted quietly in her seat, her nerves evident in the way she shifted uncomfortably amidst the charged atmosphere.

The heavy conference door swung open unexpectedly, drawing every gaze in the room to the imposing figure who strode inside. The man towered over six feet, his broad shoulders and thick arms straining against a suit that seemed two sizes too small for his muscular frame. He positioned himself near the corner, hands clasped formally in front of him, his presence instantly altering the room’s tense atmosphere.

“What the fuck is this?” James spat, his voice dripping with venom. Confusion rippled through the room as all eyes snapped toward Tyler, who stood silently in the corner. A moment later, Chanelle entered and settled into a chair near the head of the table. Evelyn’s face tightened with disdain; she shook her head sharply and let out a loud, disapproving sigh.

James’s face contorted in bewildered disgust as he leaned forward, fixing Chanelle with a hard stare. “That’s the bitch from reception,” he spat, while Chanelle coolly ignored him. Kwame interjected calmly, “Let’s maintain some decorum here.” James glared at him and snarled, “Go fuck yourself, n****,” prompting Kwame to respond with a derisive smirk.

Finally Naomi entered, closing the door with deliberate calmness. She strode purposefully to her chair as Tyler stepped forward, smoothly pulling it out for her. With a gracious smile, she murmured, “Thank you Tyler,” before taking her seat. He acknowledged her with a silent nod and returned to his position near the wall.

Naomi drew in a slow breath, letting an audible “Ahhh” escape as she settled her elbows onto the glass table and laced her fingers together. Leaning forward slightly, she met the expectant gazes around the table. “I’m certain everyone here is eager to understand why they’ve been summoned,” she said, her tone measured and deliberate. “So let us dispense with formalities and begin.” Looking towards Kwame with a faint, encouraging smile, she added, “Kwame, if you would?” He nodded crisply in acknowledgment, replying simply, “Of course.”

Kwame methodically opened the folder, drawing every eye in the room to him as he began speaking. “I’ve been looking into a case that came to my attention some time ago—a matter that troubled me considerably. It pertains to numerous allegations and lawsuits filed against Raw Couture regarding discrimination.”

James interrupted, a cynical smirk twisting his lips. “Sexism?” he scoffed. “That’s how the business world works, bitch.” Kwame gave a curt shake of his head. “I haven’t even touched on sexism yet, James,” he replied, his tone cool and deliberate. “But I didn’t need to.” James narrowed his eyes, suspicion hardening his expression.

Kwame continued gravely, “This goes beyond mere corporate misconduct. It stems from something far more insidious—the very culture cultivated within this family.” Evelyn recoiled, her voice dripping with disdain. “And just what exactly are you implying?” Kwame fixed his gaze on her, his tone unflinching. “Racial discrimination, Mrs. Sinclair.”

Damien pursed his lips, tilting his head slightly to one side as discomfort flickered across his features. “Those cases have been dealt with,” he said firmly. “They were investigated and resolved.”

Kwame shifted his focus to Damien, his tone steady and resolute. “You’re right, Mr. Sinclair,” he conceded, “but the pattern I uncovered was impossible to ignore. While reviewing old archives, I found a disturbing trend—case after case alleging racial discrimination, all swiftly settled before reaching trial, with payouts quietly silencing the accusers.”

Evelyn’s words cut sharply through the air. “Let’s just say what this is,” she hissed, turning to Kwame as he met her gaze. “You’re talking about discrimination towards the white folks.” With a sneer of mock surrender, Evelyn tossed her hands upward. “Oh, that’s just great,” she exclaimed bitterly. “God forbid the white folks would let us be and have a black-owned company.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm as she slammed a finger onto the polished table. “All those cases? Those white people were trying to undermine us.”

Kwame pressed on, his voice edged with reproach. “These individuals were your employees, Mrs. Sinclair—they worked for you under your authority. How could they possibly undermine you when you held all the power?” Naomi remained silent, her gaze fixed ahead as Damien turned to her, his tone laced with irritation. “We’ve already addressed these issues, Naomi. Why dredge them up now? The matter is resolved.”

Naomi leaned forward, her voice measured. “Kwame first raised these concerns,” she acknowledged, “and initially I dismissed them, convinced we occupied the moral high ground. Being black and a minority seemed to make us immune to accusations of discrimination.”

Kwame then spoke as Damien turned to him with an intense expression. “As an attorney,” he began, his voice resonating with conviction, “we take an oath to protect people from all walks of life—we treat everyone as human. At first, I was willing to dismiss these concerns, but God knows how many times I’ve faced racism myself. It’s ugly; it’s abhorrent. And I refuse to be someone who supports it.”

James shook his head. “This is all fucked up,” he declared bitterly. “Hell, I think I liked Tom better—he never complained.” Naomi shot him a fierce glare. “Really? I seem to recall you gave Tom a fucking hard time from the very beginning,” she spat back. James leaned forward with a smug grin, his voice dripping with malice as he added, “Oh yeah, did he mention that little detail when you were fucking him?” Naomi forced a tight smile and refused to answer.

In the corner, Tyler observed the meeting intently. His gaze shifted between Naomi and James, taking in every nuance of their bitter exchange as he gauged the palpable rivalry that charged the room.

Damien fixed his gaze on James and commanded firmly, “Shut up, James,” enunciating each syllable deliberately. Naomi pivoted toward her father, her eyes narrowing in contempt. Evelyn interjected abruptly, “Alright,” she said, swiveling to address Kwame directly. “You keep bringing this up—so what exactly are you trying to prove here? Are you implying we’re racists? Honestly, I couldn’t care less about what white people say to me—they can all go straight to hell. Power or not, I’ve endured that ugliness far too many times myself.” Priya’s unexpected remark cut through the tension as she added softly, “We all have.” Every head in the room snapped toward her in surprise.

Naomi smiled as Kwame said, “Priya’s right—we all have. And we definitely haven’t seen the last of it, but...” he paused before continuing with renewed conviction, “We have the power to make this company a safe and secure place free of prejudice where employees should be able to work without fear.”

James let out a mirthless laugh, his tone laced with venom. “So we’re the bad guys?” he mocked, leaning forward and fixing his glare on Kwame. “Who’s side are you on, n****?” His words hung in the air like a toxic cloud. Before anyone could react, Damien’s fist came crashing down on the table with a resounding thud that silenced the room. James recoiled, his bravado crumbling under Damien’s furious gaze. He shrank back into his chair, eyes darting away.
