Venus smelled like sulfur, ancient rain forests, and the distinct, metallic tang of Vex milk.

“I hate this planet,” Kira grumbled, squeezing a handful of thick, glowing blue sludge out of her boot.

“It’s humid. My cloak is sticking to places a cloak has no business sticking to, and these stupid robot-goblins don’t even have pockets to pick.”

“They don’t have pockets because they are a hyper-intelligent, cross-temporal algorithmic collective, Kira,” Vane sighed, checking the holographic readout on his gauntlet.

He was still sporting a distinct lavender blush under his helmet from his encounter with the Awoken Queen.

“They don’t need ‘loot.’ They need to rewrite reality into a cold, unfeeling geometric perfection.”

“Well, they could do it with a little more style,” Kira shot back, leaning against a crumbling Ishtar Academy wall.

She looked Vane up and down, her eyes lingering on the way his starlight robes hugged his frame.

“Speaking of unfeeling geometric perfection ... you’ve been awfully quiet since Her Royal Highness touched your lapels.

Did the Void finally swallow your dignity, or are you just fantasizing about being a footnote in her next grimoire entry?”

Before Vane could formulate a suitably pompous retort, a massive THUD shook the jungle floor.

Jax-7 marched past them, dragging the severed leg of a Vex Hobgoblin behind him like a toddlers’ pull-toy.

His chassis was covered in bright pink moss, and his Exo optics were cycling through colors like a broken disco ball.

“Guys,” Jax rumbled, his metallic voice box crackling. “I found the Gatelord. Or, well. I found his front door. And I tried to knock.”

“Jax,” Vane said, rubbing his temples. “Please tell me you didn’t just punch a Vex transit node.”

“I didn’t punch it,” Jax said defensively. “I headbutted it. It was a tactical assessment of structural integrity. Anyway, the sky is turning purple and the ground is vibrating. Is that normal for a conversation with the universe?”

A deafening, digital shriek rent the air. The sky above the Endless Steps fractured, reality tearing open in a grid of harsh, red lasers.

Emerging from the chronological rift was a Vex Gatelord—a towering, three-story monstrosity of brass and churning white fluid, with a single, unblinking red eye that locked directly onto the fireteam.

“Hide!” Kira yelled, grabbing Vane by the front of his robes and pulling him violently downward into a hollowed-out, mossy stone alcove.
