We approached Phylis with the idea of her joining our family, and she asked for time to consider her options.
What suddenly became a serious issue was the intelligence Gorky’s computer provided: a biological weapon deal he had been expected to protect—and possibly bid on. An auction was about to take place, and several dangerous actors were positioned to gain access to the weapon.
ABLE Team had been wiped out, and BAKER Team was still cleaning up stragglers from Gorky’s group. Naturally, we were called upon to locate and either seize or destroy the biological weapon.
Phylis explained that she was in the process of confirming what additional protection was required and what qualifications were needed to be allowed to bid at the auction. We allowed her to continue, instructing her to remain honest. She told us that Gorky had recently suffered a run‑in that damaged his carrier, and this latest attack had made him more interested in the biological weapon—something he believed would allow him to exact retribution.
We were fortunate. Whoever was orchestrating the auction responded with sympathy for the attack and requested one or two of his military ships to protect the island where the auction would be held.
Since we had total control of all his military ships, we replied that one ship would be provided. Two might be difficult due to “current issues.” We added that, because of the situation, Gorky requested permission to send a representative, as he was busy dealing with the aftermath.
Monica suggested we ask about the estimated highest bid so he could ensure he had sufficient funds. It sounded arrogant, but arrogance combined with large sums of money often made offers more appealing.
Phylis and Monica were shocked when a reply arrived almost immediately. The organizers emphasized the need for two ships to complete the protective circle around the island and stated that bids would start at $250,000. Depending on attendance, bidding could easily exceed two million dollars.
Deciding to lean into arrogance, Monica replied that two ships would be provided and that they would bring $20 million—”just to be safe.”
Zac and Carl thought she was pushing it too far and that bidders might become suspicious. Monica and Phylis disagreed, arguing that the immediate reply showed a serious need for the second ship. Not providing it would break their protection plan entirely.
Phylis added that Gorky had bragged more than once that money was no object. She initially thought he was being arrogant, but after reviewing his financial information, she found he had close to a billion dollars spread across various European and Caribbean banks. He could realistically assemble $20 million with some effort.
Anna and Juan began gathering as much of the $20 million as possible—Bank Certificates, gold, and cash.
Almost instantly after Phylis confirmed two ships for protection, the final auction instructions arrived. Everyone was required to arrive via yacht or boat; no aircraft would be allowed into the airspace. A no‑fly zone would be in effect.
Gorky had a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) that was fully operational and armed. Its crew quarters had been remodeled, combining three rooms into a luxurious personal suite similar to a yacht’s master bedroom. The official crew complement was 35, but the actual number was 50, with most sharing quarters and higher‑ranking personnel occupying private rooms.
We would use this ship—renamed Luckies—along with a Kidd‑class destroyer, Hammer, which was also fully operational and armed. Additionally, we had a Fast Combat Support Ship (T‑AOE) called Store to handle logistics.
Phylis, working with Monica and Anna, finalized all arrangements and informed the organizers that I would be representing Gorky. I was described as his number‑one, most trusted business partner—someone who cared only about making money and didn’t worry about legality. I supposedly had contacts to handle any legal issues so I wouldn’t have to.
We were frustrated that we couldn’t determine who organized the auction or who was responsible for the biological weapon. We hoped it was a scam that would backfire on the perpetrators.
Since Luckies had two helicopter pads, we prepared an AH‑64 attack helicopter and an SH‑60 transport helicopter. Hammer carried two AH‑64s, and Store transported one CH‑46 and one SH‑60.
This fleet provided more than enough support for the limited intelligence we had. We weren’t happy with the lack of information, but we’d been on missions with even less, so we would adapt.
