Over the following weeks, Sanju and Kamlesh continued their affair. She came over more frequently, always under the pretext of visiting his mother, but spending most of her time in his bedroom. His mother, true to her word, never interfered, never judged. She simply smiled knowingly and busied herself elsewhere.

But there was a problem. Kamlesh wanted more than just an affair. She wanted permanence. She wanted a place in Sanju’s life, in his home. But he already had four women he planned to marry. Adding Kamlesh would bring the total to five-- over the legal limit.

It was Nancy who came up with the solution. She had been talking with the other women--Harleen, Anveshi, Sushma--and they had all agreed that Kamlesh deserved to be part of their family. But how?

“Your mom,” Nancy said one evening, her brilliant mind working overtime. “Polygamy is legal for everyone, not just men. A woman can have up multiple spouses too. Your mom isn’t married. What if she married Kamlesh?”

Sanju stared at her. “My mom marry Kamlesh? But they’re both ... I mean, Kamlesh likes men.”

“She likes you,” Anveshi corrected. “They’re already best friends. And this would give her a legal reason to live here, to be part of the household. She’d be your mother’s wife in everyone’s eyes. And your lover. Everyone wins.”

It was unconventional, even by the standards of a society that accepted polyamory and polygamy. But it was also brilliant. His mother, when consulted, laughed for a full minute before agreeing.

“I’ve always loved Kamlesh,” she said, a twinkle in her eye. “As a friend, and maybe as more. I never acted on it because ... well, because I didn’t think it was an option. But if this is what it takes to keep her in our family, I’m willing.”

Kamlesh, when Sanju proposed the idea, was initially hesitant. “I’m not ... I’ve never been with a woman. I don’t know if I can...”

“You don’t have to be with her physically if you don’t want to,” Sanju assured her.

“This is a legal arrangement. A way for you to be here, officially. What you and my mom do in private is entirely up to you.”

But Kamlesh surprised him. “Your mother is a beautiful woman,” she said, her cheeks flushing. “I’ve always thought so. And I’m not ... I’m not opposed to exploring that side of myself. I’ve just never had the opportunity.”

And so, in a quiet ceremony attended by Sanju’s growing family of lovers, Kamlesh and his mother were married. It was a lesbian wedding, legally recognized and celebrated with joy and laughter. That night, Sanju’s mother and Kamlesh retired to the master bedroom, and the sounds that emerged suggested that their marriage would be far more than just a legal formality.

Sanju smiled as he lay in his own bed, surrounded by his four lovers. His family was growing, in the most beautiful and unexpected ways.

Sumitra lived in the flat opposite Sanju’s, next door to Sushma. She was thirty-three, recently divorced. She was a MILF in the truest sense of the word. Her face was classic and beautiful, with high cheekbones and full, pouty lips. Her breasts were enormous, heavy and round, with wide, dark areolae that were always visible through her thin blouses. She had a son, eight years old, who lived with his father in Pune, and she worked as a freelance graphic designer from home.

Sanju had known Sumitra for years. They had often joked and flirted harmlessly, with Sanju telling her that if she weren’t married, he would have married her on the spot. She had always laughed, never taking him seriously. But after her divorce, she had started looking at him differently. There was something in her eyes, a hunger that she tried to hide.

And then she noticed Kamlesh.

Sumitra was observant. She saw Kamlesh coming and going from Sanju’s flat at odd hours. She saw the glow on Kamlesh’s face, the satisfied smile, the way she walked slightly differently after her visits. And she knew.

The knowledge ate at her. She had thought Sanju was just a harmless flirt. She had thought she had time to make her move, to see if there was something real between them. But now Kamlesh, a widow, a woman closer to her own age, had swooped in and taken him.
