Nicholas sat down across from Kenzo Yamashiro at the long dining table, the clink of glassware and cutlery a quiet background to their conversation. The twins sat on either side of Kenzo, quiet and attentive, their eyes flicking between the two men as they spoke.
“So,” Nicholas said, lowering his glass. “How have they performed for you?”
Kenzo stopped cutting into his steak. “Better than I expected, honestly. We’ve had your chips running in Augusta’s systems since you gave us the sample. Processing throughput is up about fifty percent on our main sensor and control loops. That’s quite impressive, Nicholas.”
Nicholas allowed himself a small, satisfied smile. “I’m glad to hear it. We were confident in our product, but real-world deployment speaks for itself.”
“It does,” Kenzo agreed. “And Augusta noticed a few things your designers probably didn’t catch.”
Nicholas’s smile faded slightly, replaced by curiosity. “Such as?”
Kenzo glanced at Ray. “She can tell you better than I can. She helped build the AI.”
Ray set down her fork and leaned forward slightly. “The chips handle sustained computing well, better than the specs suggested. Under heavy concurrent load though. We hit a limit in the memory interface. When the ship runs a full sensor sweep on top of navigation and the drone network and security scanning. The cores start stalling. They spend more time waiting on the data than doing work.”
Nicholas frowned. “That shouldn’t be happening.”
“A ship like this pushes any module hard,” Ray said. “Life support and the control loops are fine. The problem shows up when the high-bandwidth jobs pile onto the same memory path. Augusta has been compensating with a scheduling layer that keeps non-critical traffic off the bus during those windows. She’s very good at that. But if several critical workloads contend with each other, software can only do so much.”
