Ella stood barefoot in the kitchen, slowly wiping down the counter after dinner. The cool tile felt grounding beneath her feet, a small, familiar reminder of the life she had stepped into four years ago. The apartment was quiet, the kind of comfortable hush that came after a shared meal. Serge was in the living room, reading, his presence steady and unobtrusive in that way she had come to rely on.

She set the cloth aside and walked toward him, her steps quiet. He looked up as she approached, his gaze meeting hers with that calm, unhurried focus. Ella curled onto the couch near him, tucking her legs beneath her. The oversized sweater slipped off one shoulder. She left it.

“You okay?” he asked, voice low.

Ella nodded, then gave a small, almost shy smile. “Just thinking ... about the future. About being a mom someday.”

The words hung between them, gentle but deliberate. She had brought this up a few times in recent months — never as a direct demand, just soft mentions that let the idea breathe. Serge’s responses had always been positive in their own measured way. He had told her she would make a wonderful mother. Each time he said something like that, something warm and hopeful expanded in her chest, even as uncertainty lingered underneath.

Serge set his tablet down and rested his hand on her knee, his thumb tracing a slow, absent circle against her skin. The touch was simple, but it anchored her.

“I think about that too,” he said after a moment, his tone even and sincere. He didn’t elaborate, but he didn’t pull away either. His dark eyes held hers, and for a moment something moved behind them—something she couldn’t name but felt answered by.

Ella felt a flutter low in her belly — part nervousness, part deep longing. She wanted this with him. A child. Their child. The image of it had been growing stronger lately, especially in quiet moments like this. She hadn’t asked the harder questions yet: how involved he saw himself being, whether fatherhood fit into the independent life he had built. Those words still felt too heavy to speak aloud. For now, she let herself sit in the possibility his calm responses had opened.

Later that evening, as part of her usual wind-down routine, Ella moved to the small landing by the front door. She liked tidying this space before bed — straightening the shoes in the wooden holder, making sure everything felt ordered and welcoming. It was a small ritual of her own.
