Sunday 8/2

The Matthews girls had a tradition of having a swim party with all their friends on the day before school starts. So when Heather and I rolled out of bed shortly before noon, there was a huge gaggle of girls clustered around the pool and going in and out of the kitchen.

It appeared, that in this case, a gaggle equaled about 20 or so teenaged girls in skimpy bikinis, without a guy in sight. That is until I walked in. Then there were screams and excited chattering as the kitchen quickly cleared.

“That’s just our new step-brother,” I heard the twins saying as they tried to calm their friends down. I could tell from the looks I was getting that my step-sisters were now busily trying to explain who I was to all their friends they hadn’t seen since the end of school last year.

Since Eva, the cook, didn’t work weekends, Crystal had kitchen duty and had whipped up a bunch of her egg salad sandwiches. They were excellent! Heather and I sat there at the kitchen table gouging ourselves on the sandwiches and sides. Her on chips and me on vegetables and dip.

Then Heather had a big slice of the sheet cake while I had strawberries and blueberries in a compote. Sometimes I really didn’t like my new diet.

It wasn’t long until I had a pair of twins perched on my legs, as their friends approached slowly. Since the twins were touching me, their friends slowly followed. Eventually, I had half dozen fifteen year olds surrounding me, and touching me lightly. When Ash and Em finally left, their posse followed them back to the pool.

Crystal sat down and explained that this was fairly normal at that age, so I didn’t worry about it.

When Madison came in, she claimed my lap like a queen claiming her throne and began giving orders to her friends as if they were minions at her high court.

I immediately picked her up and stood her beside my chair.

“These are your friends. Not your subjects. If you love me, share your love for me,” I told her.

Her lips began to quiver and tears came to her eyes.

“You do love me, don’t you?”

Madison nodded.

“And you know I love you, right?”

Again she nodded.

“Then why don’t we both share our love with your friends?”

Soon, we had a huddle of 5 or 6 girls hugging with me in the middle.

Madison pulled back for a moment and then leaned forward in front of all her friends and kissed me on the lips.

“I love you, Ryan,” she sighed. Then she left for the pool. Her friends all stared at her for a moment and then quickly followed.

Later in the afternoon, as most of the girls had dressed and left, A pair of older girls entered the family room just off the kitchen.

“Hi. Do you remember us?” one of the girls asked.

“Should I?” I asked.

“We were here when Peyton tried out for the squad,” she explained.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t think that we were properly introduced that day.”

“I’m Tracy.”

“And I’m Carrie.”

“And we were wondering if you really told Peyton that you’d take Melissa Sexton to the homecoming dance?” Tracy finished.

“I think I told Peyton that I’d take Miss Sexton on a date, but I don’t think a destination was specified.”

“How old are you, anyway?” Carrie asked.

“I’m eighteen. How old are you?” I asked Carrie.

“We’re both seventeen, but I’ll be eighteen in November. Tracy won’t be eighteen until January.”

“Well, I’m glad we got that settled,” I told them as I turned back to the magazine I had been looking at.

“The dance is in three weeks. Do you know what you’re going to wear yet?” Carrie pushed.

“Look. I haven’t even met Miss Sexton yet. And I’m not sure if I’ll even be in town that weekend.”

Tracy ran out of the room while Carrie continued to stand beside the recliner and look at me. I was hoping for Heather or even Crystal to come in about now.

“He’s in here,” Tracy was talking as she came in almost dragging a stumbling teenage girl behind her.

At the door, Tracy got behind the girl and pushed her up to the recliner.

“That’s Melissa,” Carrie announced.

I slowly got out of the recliner and stood straight and offered the girl my hand.

“My name is Ryan and I’m Peyton’s new step-brother. Peyton has informed me that you might do me the honor of a date sometime in the future. If you will go out with me, I thought we could maybe get a pizza and see a movie. And if we hit it off, maybe we could attend the dance they mentioned.”

“Oh. That sounds nice,” she said breathlessly.

“I must warn you that I have to work after school almost every day and that I have a very close friend that spends a lot of time with me when I’m home, and another friend that lives in Las Vegas that I often visit on the weekends. So any relationship we might have will not be totally exclusive, okay?”

Peyton looked at me with a big grin on her face. Tracy looked like she had bitten into a lemon and Carrie had a very strange gleam in her eye.

As for Melissa, she had a variety of looks on her face, so I couldn’t really tell what was going on.

“Peyton, I’m sure that your friends must be cool in here in the air conditioning, would you see them back outside where they can be more comfortable?”

Peyton just turned and headed outside, the other girls followed.

Peyton wandered into my room and closed and locked the door, then she shut the bathroom door and then she slinked over to my bed and slithered under the covers to snuggle up next to my ear.

“You were fantastic! You blew Melissa away and you put that bitch Tracy in her place like wow!”

“So I did what you wanted?” I asked.

“I told you that I didn’t care if you dated her, just so you ask her out. You did that tonight, so I did what Melissa wanted and now she owes me ... big time.”

“And what was I supposed to get out of this deal? Oh yeah. I get to fuck your ass!” I said as I lunged at her. Peyton screamed and jumped out of bed. “I never agreed to that!” she cried.

“In the future you should be much more careful about the deals you make,” I warned her. “Now kiss me goodnight and go to bed. I’m counting on you to help me get through tomorrow.”

“Ryan?” she whispered in my ear as she hugged me. “I think I love you too.”

Being the first day of school, the place was a madhouse. Peyton walked me from the parking lot to my first class, Spanish II. I had discovered I needed a second year of a foreign language to graduate.

“Mr. Gonzales welcomed everyone to class with a Spanish greeting, which I remembered from Spanish 1, last year and we were off. He seemed to have a story for everything he was trying to teach, and without realizing it, I had absorbed a lot more Spanish than I remembered from last year.

For instance he told about losing his dog in the market and actually taught us the names of a large assortment of fruits and vegetables. When he used them in a sentence later, I recognized each one. I decided I was going to enjoy this class.

My American History class was right next door, but it was not my next class. I had Statistics next. And I ended up asking a teacher where it was. The subject was dry, and the teacher was drier. But I knew I would need this in the near future, so I tried to pay attention.

I went back to my American History class and the teacher just covered what we would be studying. He was very political and a liberal democrat. I knew we would never see eye to eye, but I could listen to him and then regurgitate it back on the test. My goal would be to get out of that class at the end of the semester with a passing grade.

My last class of the day was my English requirement and I had chosen ‘Creative Writing’. But it seems the expected teacher had retired within the last two weeks and a replacement had not been found. The assistant principal was the substitute teacher and explained this to us before having us write a short story on anything. I started to write about Madison and the shower, but scrapped that and wrote about my grandfather losing his gold watch.

I then stopped by the office and signed out. It turned out to be fairly painless. The surprise was how many other students were signing out to go to work.

As I drove to the studio, I thought about how the day had gone. I would probably enjoy Spanish II, hated American History, decided Statistics would be tough but doable and the jury was out on Creative Writing. I had not made any new friends, but hadn’t tried to. I barely even spoke to anyone, electing to focus on getting the lay of the land. Although I did see Carrie in my American History class, but didn’t speak.

My final judgement was that I could handle it, but I wasn’t looking forward to it.

“Eric wants you to call him,” Don told me when I walked in.

“Now?” I asked. Don just nodded his head and went back to talking to one of the directors. So I went to Lorena’s office and sat in her reception area and used my new iPhone.

“The Ukrainian group will be here late Wednesday night. They plan on a jet-lag day to get their American medicals and get settled in on Thursday and then get to work on Friday. We’ll film on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Then they’ll fly out to LA on Monday,” Eric explained. “You guys will get them Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.”

“Now, I know you have school, but I need you. What would you say if we hired you a tutor to help you get your G.E.D.?”

He shut up. But I knew this tactic. First one to speak, loses. So I just thought about what he had offered. Finally I said, “I’ll get back to you.” And hung up my iPhone.

I knew that this was a big decision. Too big to make by myself. So I headed for the house. Neither Dad nor Crystal were home. In fact, no one but Eva was there. So I asked Eva for a sandwich and got a salad instead. Then I walked out to the patio and ate alone as I considered everything.

It wasn’t like I was going to miss going to my four classes, and I certainly didn’t have anyone at the new school I would miss. Socially, I didn’t fit in. Not because I was new, but because of what I did for a living. Of course, no one knew that yet, but how long would it take for word to get around?

My work provided me plenty of social interaction, and my family was mostly responsible for my base. I thought that a G.E.D. would allow me to go to college, but I wasn’t really committed to that option at the moment and didn’t see spending that much money to go. So overall, I couldn’t think of a single reason to stay in school.

I finally decided to just lay it out there for my Dad and Crystal and see what they had to say. However, I did call my second cousin attorney and checked on the legality of dropping out of school.

Finally, I went up and took a nap.

“ ... and based on my bank account as of this morning, I have earned over $34,000 in the last two months, a commission of $18,000 is coming and a contract for another $50,000 by December if I can produce the feature they want,” I explained to them.

Dad and Crystal just looked at me without saying anything. At first, Crystal thought I was joking, and when she realized I wasn’t, began to get upset. But when Dad just kept asking me, “Anything else?” she calmed down. When I finished, he stood and offered Crystal his hand.

“If you’ll excuse us, Crystal and I need to talk this over,” he said as they left the table. “We’re going to take a little ride. We should be back in a while.”

This was the engineer in my Dad taking over. I knew he would listen to me, mull it over pretty thoroughly, then question me again. Only then would he make a decision. I don’t know when he started going for a drive to sort things out. It must be a thing he got from Crystal now that they had five kids in the house.

I went outside and joined the twins in the pool.

“I want you to know,” my Dad started when they returned, “that this decision is going to be yours. Crystal and I will support whatever you decide.”

Well ... that floored me! It wasn’t at all what I expected.

“However, we’d like to point out a few things we want you to consider. High school is one of the first things that you commit to as a teenager, and if you fail to finish, it may cause you to think of yourself as a quitter. By that, we mean that if something comes up later in your life that is difficult, it might be easier to quit that as well.”

I’ll admit that I hadn’t considered that before. I’d need to think on it some more.

“Second, a high school diploma will open a lot of doors that a G.E.D. certificate might not,” he continued. “Now in your current profession, those doors might not be necessary, but you need to consider just how long being a male porn star might last. Will there come a time when you want or need to look for something else? And if so, will you need a high school diploma at that time?”

“We’re not saying you should give up what you’re doing for now. And based on what the Nobles are saying, I’m sure that they are envisioning a long and profitable career for you with their company. But is that the life that you want to live?” he asked. “And so I guess what we’re trying to say is that we think you have a lot of decisions concerning your future that you are going to have to make, and maybe you don’t have to make all those decisions right now. Of course, that means that it might be wise to keep going to school until you can decide all these things for sure.”
