“What do you want?” I asked, looking up at him.
“I want to join you,” he said, and the words shocked me more than any accusation could have. “I want to share in what you have created. I have grown tired of Priya’s submission she gives it too easily now. I want fresh territory. I want my daughters. And in exchange, I will give you my blessing. I will legitimize your rule. We will rule together, father and son, as the ancient kings did, with our women between us.”
I stood, facing him, feeling the weight of the moment. This was the crossroads. If I refused, he would destroy me. If I accepted, I would be sharing what I had come to think of as mine alone.
But I was his son. And I recognized in him the same darkness that lived in me.
“Agreed,” I said. “But on my terms. The women belong to both of us, but I am the first among equals. I have earned their love. You will have their obedience, but I have their hearts.”
