As a degree of calm returned, A breath of soothing quiet settled over me. I blinked. Hairs at my nape rose. An eerie sensation registered. My body stiffened. A hand patted my shoulder. Unfortunately, it sent an icy chill through my chest. Like a gentle breath of wind, tinkling, unearthly words brushed thoughts.
:Don’t worry, I’m here. I’ll take care of you.:
My whole body jumped. Startled, I turned, blurting, “why in fuck did you do that! Shit! You blew out his brains!”
For an instant, the presence recoiled and withdrew. Silvery motes sparkled and shimmered above and around the passenger seat. Frosty patterns formed on the window and swirled in the air, then my breath was curling into a visible fog. Sweetly feminine and not a little sarcastic, a distinct, ghostly voice swept through my head.
:Actually, he shot himself ... instead of you ... and, you’re welcome!:
“You can talk!”
:Well, duh?: she answered with youthful disdain.:I’m not talking. It’s called telepathy.:
I frowned, startled by the mockery, blurting, “I know what it is!” Then, catching myself, I remembered my reaction and felt shame. That touch on my shoulder and her words gave me pause. This ghost girl had saved my life. In seconds, I calmed, That, in itself pretty unusual. After my tour of duty and the wreckage to mind and body caused by Afghanistan, I was constantly jittery. I searched for a shape in the wavering distortions of light, then grudgingly admitted to myself that this impossibility had saved my life.
“okay, you saved my ass back there!. Thank you.”
:Like I said, you’re welcome.: The frosty glimmer coalesced, then she appeared. Suddenly, she was there, making my heart skip. A good thing I’d parked the Expedition, or else I really would be in the ditch. I wasn’t exactly frightened, more like struck dumb with awe.
