Low Mars Orbit

Nate had been aboard the ore carrier for eighteen hours. Not stowed. Not strapped in. Just contained.

The passenger section sat directly behind the cockpit, a long, pressurized compartment that had been designed to carry a few dozen technicians and supervisors on short hops between orbit and surface. It had padded wall benches, fold-down jump seats, proper life-support hookups—and absolutely no expectation of comfort at scale.

Now it carried just over two hundred people.

The aisles were barely wide enough for two bodies to pass without turning sideways. People sat shoulder to shoulder on the benches, leaned against bulkheads, or sprawled on the deck with bags tucked under knees and arms looped around them. The air was warm and constantly moving, scrubbed hard to keep up with the load. It smelled like plastic, sweat, recycled water, and the faint metallic tang that everything in space eventually picked up.

There were bathrooms—four of them—set into the aft bulkhead, utilitarian and perpetually occupied. Water dispensers lined one wall, along with food dispensers that produced dense, flavorless nutrition bars and electrolyte paste on demand. Nobody complained. Complaining implied expectation, and nobody here had any.

There were no windows. Modern space vessels never wasted hull integrity on windows. Instead, view screens lined both sides of the compartment, rectangular, wider than tall, framed to resemble windows for people who liked the illusion. Right now they showed Mars—dark, silent, almost unreal. The night side. No lights. No surface detail. Just a black curve swallowing stars.

New Pittsburgh was on the far side of the planet, 48 degrees north of the equator, 0 degrees longitude since the prime meridian ran right through the middle of it, already in daylight. Just after dawn, according to the ship clock. Nate imagined the covered streets lighting down to night mode, streetlights clicking off as the sky brightened above the plexiglass roofs. He tried not to think about how close it was and how long this last leg felt.

Dedicated passenger service orbit to surface craft made fast, clean ascents and descents—tight burn profiles, minimal time in transit, schedules built around convenience. Ninety minutes from Triad to NP. Thirty minutes longer for the return trip. Earthlings rode those. Management rode those. Anyone whose presence was considered time-critical rode those.

Former vermin who were now greenies were told that a shuttle was what would take them down to the surface. That was not untrue as long as you expanded your definition of “shuttle” a bit. What they actually were riding were massive ore carriers. Twenty-three hours to bring one down. Nearly twice that to put a loaded carrier back up. The ore ships did the heavy lifting. Loaded on the surface, they blasted upward on raw thrust, punching through the thin atmosphere like stones thrown hard enough to escape. Once in low orbit, they took their time—slow, fuel-efficient transfer arcs up to Triad’s areostationary ring. Empty ships came back down the same way, falling toward Mars like rocks and letting the atmosphere do the braking, thrusters only waking late to control speed, descent, and landing.

Wingless. Unpretty. Built to survive abuse.

This ship had come up full of iron ore. It was going back down empty—empty of useful rocks, anyway. Nate and the others were just ballast that breathed.

There was inertial dampening. No one needed to be strapped in. You could walk around freely even during burns or maneuvers, though most people didn’t. The vibration during engine activity rattled teeth and made conversation pointless, and the noise lived in your chest more than your ears.

Nate shifted his position on the bench, stretching his legs into the aisle for a moment before someone stepped around him. Across from him, a man thumbed through a clinker, scrolling out of habit more than purpose. Further down, someone slept sitting up, head tipped forward, hair falling into their face.

The rumor—passed quietly, seat to seat—was that they’d start the de-orbit burn soon.

No announcement confirmed it. Ore ships didn’t do friendly updates. There would be a change in vibration, a subtle shift in the way the sound settled into the hull, and that would be that.

Scheduled landing time sat solid in Nate’s head: 09:25 New Pittsburgh local. 13:47 universal.

He’d memorized it hours ago.

Time on Mars was its own problem.

Officially, nothing had changed. Every system that mattered to WestHem—contracts, shipping logs, payroll, compliance, liability—ran on Universal Time. UT was the only time that legally existed. It was the time WestHem understood, the time Earthling managers trusted, and the time the corporate suits insisted on seeing printed at the top of every form and schedule.

Practically, UT was almost completely useless to anyone who actually lived on Mars.

A Martian day—one full rotation of the planet—was longer than an Earth day by thirty-seven minutes. Not enough to feel dramatic, but enough to ruin any attempt at pretending the difference didn’t matter. Thirty-seven minutes a day accumulated fast. After only a few days, your sleep cycle drifted. After a few weeks, noon no longer lined up with the middle of the daylight period. After a year, you were permanently out of phase with the sun if you tried to live on Earth time.

Human beings could not tolerate that.

So the people who lived on Mars adapted the clock instead of themselves.

The Martian clock kept the familiar twenty-four-hour structure—no new hours, no strange divisions—but it stretched the day where it could. The difference was handled minute by minute. From 0600 to 1700, each hour ran sixty-one minutes instead of sixty. From 1700 through the night to 0600, each hour ran sixty-two. Eleven slightly longer daytime hours and thirteen longer nighttime ones absorbed the extra thirty-seven minutes without disturbing the shape of the day. Noon stayed anchored at the center of daylight. Midnight stayed fixed in the middle of the night. The sun rose and set when people expected it to, and life kept its rhythm.

From the inside, it felt normal. From the outside, it looked insane.

Earthlings hated it. They called it inefficient, sloppy, indulgent. They complained that it made scheduling opaque and accounting messy. They insisted—loudly—that UT was the only real time and that anything else was a convenience layer at best and a labor conspiracy at worst.

And yet, every Earthling who worked on Mars learned very quickly that ignoring Martian time cost money.

People showed up late. Or too early. Or exhausted. Shifts drifted. Error rates climbed. Absenteeism soared. Productivity dipped in ways that showed up cleanly and mercilessly on spreadsheets. The planet didn’t care what time Earth thought it was. Human bodies didn’t either.

So WestHem adapted without admitting it was adapting.

Everything was still written in UT. Every schedule, every shift assignment, every meeting notice displayed neat, precise Universal timestamps. But no human being actually tried to reason them out anymore. Nobody could. The conversion was continuous, nonlinear, and unforgiving. There were no rules of thumb, no “about this many hours” shortcuts. Trying to do it in your head was a good way to miss work.

Instead, the AI handled it.

You told the system what you meant—Monday through Thursday, nine to five, Martian time—and it did the rest. The UT times on the screen changed every day, sliding rearward a little, adjusting silently to keep the lived schedule stable. Eight hours of work stayed eight hours of work. The sun stayed where it belonged. The body stayed aligned.

CEOs and CFOs stationed on Earth grumbled about it, but they didn’t fight it. They couldn’t. The AI would simply refuse to schedule people outside Martian working hours, no matter how clean the UT math looked on paper. Meetings got bounced. Shift requests were denied. The system wasn’t arguing. It was enforcing reality.

Nate knew he was going to have to learn all of it soon. Martian time, Martian hours, the way the day stretched and slid without ever quite matching Earth’s expectations. He’d heard people say you stopped thinking in UT after a while, that you stopped trying to reconcile the numbers and just trusted the system to tell you when to be somewhere. The computer would know. His body would learn. Universal Time would fade into background noise, something printed on screens for managers and accountants. He wasn’t there yet—but he would be.

The view screens flickered as the feeds adjusted, stars sliding as the ship’s orientation changed. They were slowly turning around, aligning the engines into the direction of their orbit. Mars still showed nothing—just darkness and curvature—but Nate knew they were already arcing toward the day side and would see orbital sunrise soon.

He closed his eyes and listened to the ship—machinery doing exactly what it was designed to do, indifferent to the people packed in behind the cockpit. They would land, unload them, take on another load of ore, and go right back up again.

He dozed.

Nate hadn’t slept properly in four days. Triad’s waiting area. The overnight queue. The transfer. The long, slow arc down. Sleep had happened in fragments—head tipped against a bulkhead, knees drawn up, mind slipping under just long enough to reset before noise or movement pulled him back out. It counted, technically. The body had closed down for minutes at a time. That was enough to keep him upright.

It wasn’t enough to feel rested.

He kept his eyes closed, chin lowering to his chest, the hum of the ship steady and almost soothing. Not enough to refresh him. Just enough to make him oblivious to the passage of time, Martian or UT.

The de-orbit burn woke him.

It wasn’t an announcement. It wasn’t a warning. It was noise and vibration—deep and immediate, rising through the deck and into his bones. A hard, sustained tremor that swallowed conversation and made the air feel dense.

Somewhere far behind them, ultra-high efficiency hydrogen-burning rocket engines had come alive, not screaming but roaring in a way that lived beyond hearing. The sound pressed inward more than outward. People stopped talking mid-sentence. A few hands went automatically to the benches. No one needed straps. The inertial dampening held the line. There was no stomach-dropping shift, no sensation of falling or being thrown backward. Just vibration. Just power.

It lasted maybe three minutes. Long enough to feel deliberate. Short enough to feel surgical.

Then it stopped.

The compartment exhaled. Conversations resumed in low murmurs. Someone laughed too loudly and then stopped. Nate blinked and straightened, rolling his shoulders as the deck settled back into its baseline hum.

He looked at the screen.

Mars was still there—bright now, fully in daylight. Rust and ocher and long shadows cut by low sun. The curvature filled the frame, slow and enormous. He searched for something—anything—that looked human. A grid. A scar. A straight line representing intercity mag-lev tracks. A hint of geometry.

Nothing.

From this altitude, there was only planet.

They did not appear to be getting closer. The surface didn’t rush upward the way it did in vids. It just rolled beneath them, patient and vast.

He let his head rest back again. The state of shitty sleep reclaimed him.

The second vibration was different.

Shorter. Rougher. Less controlled.

Nate’s eyes creaked open.

The compartment had gone quieter this time—not because the engines were louder—they were not firing at all currently—but because everyone had learned what the first tremor meant. He leaned forward, eyes locking on the screen.

Red. But not from the surface.

At first it was faint—thin threads streaking past the frame. Then it thickened. Plasma licked along the edges of the ship, bright and angry, flaring and curling in chaotic ribbons. The view screens adjusted automatically, dimming against the glare.

They were in the Martian atmosphere now. It was not even one percent of Earth’s atmosphere. Incapable of supporting even simple life on the surface. But enough to provide braking for spacecraft. Enough to slow them from suborbital speed to a much slower terminal velocity.

He felt no change in momentum. No falling sensation. No weight shift. The dampening held firm. If not for the vibration and the visual storm outside, he could have believed they were still coasting in vacuum.

The red glow intensified, then steadied into a constant flow. The plasma streamed upward along the hull, peeled away, and vanished behind them. The noise settled into a heavy, sustained shudder that rattled through the benches and into his teeth.

It went on like that for the better part of ten minutes.

Gradually, almost imperceptibly, the red thinned. The streaks broke apart. The glow faded.

When it cleared, the surface had climbed dramatically in the frame.

Craters were visible now. Ridges. Long, dry channels carved into the dust. Hills dotted the landscape below. A small mountain range, tall, sharp in definition. The color had deepened, less abstract and more textured. The horizon felt closer, heavier.

Still no sign of human presence.

Just Mars.

Nate kept his eyes on the screen, elbows braced on his knees, watching the red world rise to meet them.

The surface sharpened with every passing minute. Individual boulders stood out now—rocks the size of houses scattered like forgotten toys across the plains. Dust drifts curled in shallow channels, frozen mid-flow by the thin wind. A low escarpment rolled into view, its edge crumbled into talus slopes that caught the morning light in long, pale streaks. The horizon had flattened; the curve of the planet was no longer obvious. They were falling into it.

Occasional jolts rippled through the deck—short, sharp bursts of maneuvering jets firing in sequence. A quick lateral nudge here, a brief retro pulse there. The ship yawed a degree or two, corrected, steadied, slowed, sped up. No announcements. No voice from the cockpit. Just the faint hiss-thump of attitude thrusters doing their job, keeping the ore carrier aligned for the final glide path.

He scanned the view for anything artificial. A road. A power line. The glint of a solar array. Nothing. The landscape stayed empty, raw, indifferent. Even at five thousand meters the only marks were natural—crater rims, wind-carved ridges, the faint tracery of ancient outflow channels long since run dry. At three thousand meters the details grew brutal: individual rocks casting pinprick shadows, dust devils spinning lazy spirals across the regolith. Still no sign of humans. No high-rise clusters under their pressurized roofs, no greenhouse grids, no transport tubes glinting in the sun. Just Mars, vast and red and silent.

Below a thousand meters the ground seemed to rush up faster, though the descent remained controlled, almost gentle. The ship leveled out, skimming low across a broad plain. Then Nate saw it.

Runways.

Two wide, parallel strips of Martian made carbonized concrete, their surfaces dusted the same rusty color as everything else but marked by the faint, darker tracks of tire treads and landing gear. Red dust lay thin over them, blown into shallow drifts along the edges, but the geometry was unmistakable—straight, deliberate, human. The first real proof that people had ever set foot here.

The carrier drifted over the near runway, slow and steady. No flare. No dramatic slam to the surface. Just a soft settling as the landing struts extended with a mechanical whine. The main gear kissed the surface first—three jolts in quick succession as the ship settled its weight. Then the nose gear touched. A final, gentle rock, and they were down.

Maneuvering thrusters fired again—short, precise bursts that pushed them forward along the runway. The ship taxied slowly, wheels rumbling over the uneven regolith, dust kicking up in thin plumes that hung in the low gravity before drifting back down. Through the view screen Nate watched the spaceport infrastructure come into focus: squat service buildings half-buried in berms, fuel depots ringed by blast walls, clusters of cargo handlers standing idle like giant insects. Everything low and functional, painted in the same muted reds and grays to blend with the desert.

They rolled on for what felt like forever—nearly thirty minutes of slow, deliberate taxiing. The carrier was heavy even empty. Even in Mars’s reduced gravity, the ship’s momentum took a while to kill. Ahead and to the side, another ore carrier stood on its launch platform. Like all ships that operated in the Martian atmosphere and carried the potential of crashing on the surface, it was bright green in color—the best shade to stand out on the Martian surface.

The outbound ship rested horizontal, engines parallel to the ground, cradled in a massive articulated frame that ran along a wide rail bed. As Nate’s carrier drifted past, the platform machinery stirred. Hydraulic arms engaged with a low groan audible even through the hull. The cradle tilted upward in a slow, deliberate pivot—lifting the entire vessel from horizontal to vertical in one smooth, forty-five-second arc. When it locked, the engines pointed straight at the ground, ready for the burn that would haul another load of iron ore back to Triad.

Nate had read about this setup months ago on the welfare net. The horizontal cradle let them load cargo and propellant safely on the ground without fighting gravity the whole time. Once everything was secure, the platform raised the ship to vertical for launch. Simple. Efficient. And safe. The spaceport sat due west of New Pittsburgh; the standard launch trajectory would arc away from the city, never overflying the high-rise clusters or the enclosed streets beneath their pressurized roofs. No one wanted a fully-loaded ship with thousands of tons of hydrogen, oxygen, and iron ore dropping from the sky over populated areas if something went wrong during ascent.

The outbound carrier hung vertical a moment longer, engines silent but primed.

Then the view screen dimmed slightly as the gate mechanisms began to align with their own ship. The carrier settled the last few centimeters with a muted metallic thud. A second later, a heavier clank reverberated through the hull as the docking collar locked into place.

The engines wound down in stages. The vibration bled out of the deck. Air systems shifted pitch. A faint pressure equalization hiss whispered through the bulkheads.

No applause. No announcement. Just arrival.

The view screens remained active, but there was nothing to see beyond the docking lane—just a broad expanse of red-dusted tarmac stretching outward under the pale sky. Other green ore carriers sat at distant gates, their hulls stained with red dust, angled slightly as if caught mid-motion. Ground crews moved in deliberate patterns between them, vehicles gliding low and slow across the open concrete.

Nothing ornamental. Nothing welcoming.

The hatch cycled open with a soft mechanical click.

Everyone stood at once.

Two hundred people shifting weight in a confined space made its own sound—fabric, mocks, bags being pulled free from under benches. Nate slung his bag over one shoulder and stepped into the aisle. No one spoke much. There was nothing to say. They were all new here. All equally worthless. All equally surplus until proven otherwise.

They formed a line without instruction.

One by one, they filed through the forward hatch and into the jetway.

It was long and narrow, metal-sided, the floor vibrating faintly from the machinery that held it sealed against the carrier’s hull. The air inside was cooler than the compartment behind them. Cleaner. Less human.

They walked.

No one greeted them.

The jetway fed directly into a large terminal chamber—functional, high-ceilinged, lit in bright industrial white. The walls were reinforced composite. The floor polished but scarred from traffic. Cameras tracked their movement silently from recessed housings near the ceiling. Indoor security drones, each with an arm span of only thirty centimeters, cruised here and there, likely fully under the control and discretion of an AI computer.

New Pittsburgh police stood at intervals along the perimeter. Dark uniforms. Sidearms visible but not dramatic. Airport security personnel in lighter tones moved in slow, watchful arcs.

This was not the main passenger terminal.

It was newer. Sharper-edged. Built within the last few years when the influx from Earth had stopped being theoretical and started being logistical. It lacked the restaurants and retail storefronts of the primary terminal. No kiosks. No lounges. Just signage, directional lanes, and controlled flow.

No one waited here to greet them. No desks. No welcome counters. No orientation briefings. Only uniformed personnel whose only instruction seemed to be: “Keep moving.”

They kept moving.

The line funneled forward under overhead signs printed in clean, block lettering:

THIS WAY TO SPACEPORT EXIT

TO NEW PITTSBURGH PROPER

Nate followed the crowd through another corridor, past reinforced doors, past more cameras, past a final checkpoint where security personnel scanned them without comment and waved them onward.

The space opened abruptly.

They stepped through a wide threshold and into the main passenger terminal.

The difference was immediate.

Noise. Conversation. The smell of real food drifting from somewhere out of view. Families seated in orderly clusters near boarding gates. Employed-class travelers with rolling cases and clean clothes, glancing up briefly as the line of greenies entered and then looking away just as quickly.

This was the terminal Earthlings used. This was the one with options.

At the far end of the hall, a massive window stretched from floor to ceiling, facing southeast. Nate followed the line toward it almost without meaning to. The first glimpse of the city came all at once.

Beyond the glass, a few kilometers away across open ground, New Pittsburgh rose out of the red landscape like something assembled rather than grown. There was no sprawl. No creeping suburban ring. No scatter of low structures feathering outward into the dust.

The city sprawled upward, not outward.

Tower after tower thrust straight out of the regolith, most of them between a hundred and a hundred and fifty stories tall. Slender. Narrow. Many rectangular, some triangular, a few tapering slightly toward their tops as if gravity had been negotiated rather than obeyed. The skyline was not a single cluster but a dense forest of vertical forms packed tightly together, steel and composite catching the low morning light in muted grays and dark reds.

Mars allowed that.

At thirty-eight percent of Earth’s gravity, the loads were different. Columns carried less weight. Foundations could be shallower. Structural members could be thinner without compromising safety. And once the towers were sealed and occupied, artificial gravity kept the interior spaces familiar and stable for the people who lived and worked inside. The buildings themselves, though, stood in Martian gravity—tall, narrow, daring in proportions that would have been reckless on Earth.

There were no earthquake concerns to account for. Mars was only barely active tectonically, the last gasp of its original heat and energy nearly exhausted. It did not shake the way Earth did. It did not spew vulcanism into the pale sky. No damaging tantrums waiting beneath the crust. No fault lines threatening to shear steel and concrete apart. And the wind, though constant, moved through an atmosphere too thin to do real harm. It carried dust, not force.

So the architects and engineers had taken liberties.

Bracing that would have been mandatory on Earth became optional here. Setbacks gave way to sheer vertical faces. Triangular cross-sections appeared in places where engineers had discovered they could save material without sacrificing strength. The skyline looked efficient rather than ornamental—each building shaped by physics and budget more than by ego.

And they were close together.

He could see it now—the faint line of the street-level roof stretching between structures, a continuous plane of reinforced transparency linking building to building. The entire city was interconnected at that level. No isolated blocks. No dead ends. Once you were inside, you could get anywhere from anywhere without stepping into the open.

It was dense, but not endless.

For a planet with as much dry land as Earth, this was a small footprint. One point two million permanent inhabitants called New Pittsburgh home—less than most mid-sized Earth cities held—but they lived stacked instead of spread. Walking distance was measured vertically and horizontally in manageable increments. The city was tall, but not so wide that it required subways or mag-lev lines to function. People moved on foot beneath the canopy and between towers. Elevators carried them up and down; their own legs carried them across.

It was compact enough to be knowable.

He kept looking. Now that his eyes knew what to search for, the edges of the skyline sharpened. Between the completed towers, he spotted skeletons—open frameworks of steel and composite rising in deliberate grids. Several stood clustered toward the north side of the city, their upper levels unfinished, cranes perched like thin, patient birds along their crowns.

Construction.

Not one or two towers, but dozens. The north side looked newer. Taller in places. Raw.

He wondered if he was going to be working on one of those sites—maybe hauling beams, guiding deliveries, moving materials from ground staging to wherever they needed to go. His job description had been vague enough to cover almost anything: Junior Beam Erection, Alignment & Seating Technician, Level 1. That could mean standing on a crew and doing what you were told. It could mean tightening bolts. It could mean running parts from one place to another until someone trusted you with something heavier.

As long as they didn’t want him to put on a biosuit and climb up on the skeleton of one of those buildings, he would be fine.

The window ended before the thought could stretch any further.

The line curved away from the glass and into the body of the terminal. Within a few steps the skyline vanished, replaced by reinforced composite walls and overhead lights that hummed with quiet efficiency.

They passed a security checkpoint—multiple lanes divided by waist-high barriers. Uniformed officers stood behind scanners and biometric stations. The greenies were waved through with little more than a glance; it was the departing passengers, the ones headed up to Triad, who were being examined carefully. Bags opened. Bodies scanned twice. Questions asked in low, serious tones.

The corridor widened after the checkpoint and sloped gently upward. Overhead signage directed the flow with simple arrows and clean block lettering. The air felt cooler here, less recycled, tinged faintly with lubricant and ozone.

A smaller window appeared along the right-hand wall as they approached the end of the corridor.

The city was visible again—but framed, compressed. Less dramatic this time. A narrow slice of towers rising beyond a stretch of open ground. Enough to confirm it was real. Not enough to linger.

The corridor opened into a tram station.

Two parallel tracks ran through a recessed bay, separated from the platform by waist-high safety barriers. The tram itself sat waiting—low-profile, industrial, painted the same functional green as the ore ships. Its windows were thick and narrow, designed more for integrity than sightseeing.

This was the only route into the city. No pedestrian walkway stretched across the open plain. No private vehicles waited outside. Everything that moved between the spaceport and New Pittsburgh proper moved by MarsTrans.

And MarsTrans charged.

A digital board above the boarding gates displayed the rate plainly:

CITY TRANSFER — 100 DOLLARS

Two kilometers.

Nate swallowed once and stepped toward the payment station. He pressed his index finger to the scanner. The system pulsed green and deducted the amount without ceremony.

AUTHORIZED.

The gates slid open.

The tram was already loading. People were funneling in quickly, filling the forward cars first. Nate moved with the line, adjusting his bag on his shoulder. He reached the nearest door just as the warning tone chimed.

The doors hesitated. Then opened again. He stepped through with a small surge of bodies behind him.
