“Yo, Nate-dawg,” said the voice of Snark. “It’s motherfuckin’ eight of the clock and shit. Time to let go of your slut and get your ass up.”
Nate’s eyes creaked open.
Since there were no windows in the bedroom and he had the screen turned off, the room was dark. Only the thin crack of light beneath the door and the tiny standby light on the holo desk provided any illumination. He could feel the warm female body pressed against him though.
Lissa.
She had stayed the night again.
After Roxy and Xan headed home the previous evening, Lissa had simply never left. This was the third time she had slept over since that first overnight visit a little more than a week earlier. Tyler was aware of it. Tyler professed not to notice it was even happening.
A system had developed.
Lissa simply did not go home when the evening wound down. Nate and Lissa never asked permission and Tyler never attempted to forbid anything. He also never acknowledged what was happening. It was an “I see nothing” arrangement at its finest.
In the mornings, when Lissa emerged from Nate’s bedroom and joined them for breakfast, Tyler treated her exactly as he always had. As far as he was concerned, she had simply stopped by before work. Everyone maintained the fiction because maintaining it was easier than discussing it.
“Ohhh, fuck,” Lissa groaned against him. “Eight already?”
“Yep,” Nate groaned.
The two of them smelled strongly of stale sweat and sex and badly needed a shower. On any other Saturday or Sunday they would have ignored Snark entirely and slept until they felt like getting up. Not today.
Today was the first day of the installation job over at Amelia Brown’s rezzie. It was also the second day of Lissa’s first childcare hustle, watching two children for an Earthling couple cheap enough to take a chance on a brand-new kid-minder who charged only twenty-five dollars an hour as long as lunch was provided.
“Lights on,” Nate said, already wincing in anticipation.
The bedroom exploded with brightness. Both of them immediately squinted.
“Fuck me,” Lissa muttered.
“You two look like you could use some therapeutic caffeine to get your asses into gear,” Snark announced. “Did you know there’s a subscription service for Carol’s Caffeine Castle in the lobby? For only a hundred dollars a week, they’ll have a standard shot of authentic-style artificial espresso waiting for you as you head off to work each morning. Of course, if you want that shot in some kind of drink, you gotta pay extra.”
“Of course you do,” Nate said. “It’s the WestHem way.”
He stretched while Lissa unashamedly threw the blankets aside and climbed out of bed. She stood naked beside the mattress, her hair a mess from sleep, making no effort whatsoever to cover herself. By this point there was no modesty between them other than that surrounding bathroom activities. Though they were still not an official couple, were still not courting under the cultural context of the word, they had done pretty much everything that a male and female can do to each other. Other than a Northern Docking Mission that was. Nate still had not found anyone other than Darla who was willing to put his member in her mouth for more than a second or two. A pity.
“You want to sign up for the shit, Nate-dawg?” Snark asked. “If your slut wants a shot too it’s half price as long as you text them in advance.”
“Snark,” Nate said, “didn’t I ask you not to try to sell me shit before I’ve taken my first piss of the day?”
“Yes,” Snark replied. “You did tell me that. But unless your ass wants to pony up for the premium ad-free Snark, this is the fuckin’ world you live in.”
Nate sighed. “And good morning to you too,” he said.
“Good morning, mofo,” Snark replied cheerfully. “I trust you slept well? Passive brain scanning showed more than two hours of Stage 4 sleep and more than two additional hours of scattered REM sleep. There is a definite correlation between your quality of sleep and whether or not you have a naked slut sleeping with you. Interesting shit, right?”
“Fuckin’ A,” Nate said after a moment to think it over. He actually did find that to be interesting shit.
The most awkward part of Lissa’s sleepovers was the morning.
In order to maintain their loose illusion that Lissa had not really stayed all night and was not really still here instead of just about to show up for breakfast (even though she never showed up for breakfast on any other days) they had to make sure she could shower and dress without being seen by Tyler.
This meant enlisting Snark as a conspirator.
After he and Lissa pulled on their old clothes from the night before and gathered fresh clothes to change into afterward, Nate asked Snark what Tyler was doing at the moment.
Snark would never tell him if Tyler was engaged in something embarrassing. For instance, if he were jerking off in the middle of the kitchen right now, she would simply advise Nate not to come out yet and leave it at that. But she would provide general observations when there was no reason not to.
It seemed that Tyler was not currently jerking off in the kitchen. “He’s standing with his back to the hallway cooking some fuckin’ egg protein at the stove,” Snark informed them.
“Right,” Nate said. “I taught him to do that shit. Let’s do it, slut-dawg.”
The bedroom door slid open. Lissa took a quick confirming look, saw that Tyler was indeed facing away from them, and slipped out into the hallway. A moment later she disappeared into the bathroom and left the door open behind her.
Nate strolled out after her.
“Morning, Tye,” he called.
“Wassup, Nate-dawg,” Tyler returned tonelessly, without even bothering to turn his head.
Nate slipped into the bathroom and let the door close behind him.
Once alone in the bathroom, they showered. The shower was not really big enough for two people. That was probably for the best. If it had been, they likely would have spent considerably more time accomplishing the task than was strictly necessary.
Instead, Lissa stepped in first. She wetted herself, washed herself with the multipurpose body soap from the dispenser, rinsed her body and hair thoroughly, and then stepped back out, leaving the water running behind her. Nate took her place while she dried off, pulled on her fresh clothes, and attacked her hair with a brush.
Fifteen minutes later, both of them were dry and dressed and clean smelling. Lissa’s hair was still visibly wet, but Tye would pretend not to notice that most likely. He could just attribute it to increased humidity in the pressurized air keeping her locks from properly drying on her alleged walk over from her own rezzie.
“Yo, Snark,” Nate said while pulling on his socks. “What’s Tye up to now?”
“He’s standing at the sink washing the pan he cooked his eggs in,” Snark informed him.
Perfect timing.
Lissa slipped out of the bathroom first and made her way quickly toward the rezzie door. Thanks to prior instruction from Snark, the door slid open for her without requiring any interaction. She stepped through into the hallway, waited a couple of seconds, and then came right back in.
The door slid shut behind her.
“Hey, asswipe,” she greeted her lover’s butt-buddy
Tyler glanced over from the sink. “Hey, butt plug,” he replied. “Here for breakfast again?”
“Fuckin’ A,” Lissa told him.
At that moment Nate emerged from the bathroom. “Hey, slut-dawg,” he said, as though she had not been showering in front of him minutes earlier. “How does egg sandwiches sound?”
“Works for me,” she replied. “How much?”
“Twenty bucks will cover it.”
“Fuckin’ A,” she said.
And just like that, the three of them fell into their morning routine.
Of course Tyler did not really think Lissa had just shown up. But he did not have any actual evidence to the contrary either, so why question it? The arrangement worked because nobody challenged it. Lissa got to spend the night. Nate got to wake up next to her. Tyler got to maintain the comforting illusion that he was not directly participating in any sort of social impropriety.
Everybody won.
They talked naturally while Nate cooked up some egg protein of his own and put it between slices of fresh bread from the AgriCorp store bakery. A little fake cheese, some fake mayo, some real salt and pepper, and you had a breakfast for twenty bucks apiece. Not bad.
Tyler lingered in the kitchen while Nate worked. He asked about the installation job. He asked about Lissa’s childcare hustle. He asked how long each of them expected to be gone.
“Probably until after fifteen hundred at least,” Nate told him. “Maybe longer if something gets fucked up.”
Tyler nodded thoughtfully.
“And you?” he asked Lissa. “Coming over after your gig?”
“Probably,” she said. “But I’m there until at least sixteen or so. Assuming the little crotch goblins don’t kill me and roast me on a fuckin’ spit or some shit like that.”
Tyler nodded again. Nate noticed that he seemed quite pleased by these answers.
Tyler did not say aloud that maybe Deal might come over. And he did not mention anything else that might happen if two young males found themselves alone together in a rezzie all day. Probably more than watching some holo and having a few beers.
Nate was not stupid. And he was completely unoffended.
He found himself reflecting that the rump rangers—if that was really what Tye and Deal were—actually had it a little easier than the hetero couples who just wanted to fuck without getting married. It was probably harder for the rump-rangers to find each other. But once they did? Nobody thought twice about two male friends spending time together. Deal could spend the entire day hanging around Tyler’s rezzie and nobody would find that unusual. Nobody would whisper about it. Nobody would start making assumptions.
True, if they were to be caught behind Tyler’s closed door while alone, that might be difficult to explain. But difficult was not the same thing as impossible. When Tyler had found Lissa in Nate’s bedroom with the door closed, there was really only one conclusion available to a reasonable observer. But Tye was smart and good at thinking on his feet. He might be able to come up with something.
Not that Nate gave a shit that Tye and Deal wanted to do whatever it was that two rump-rangers did to each other (he and Roxy still couldn’t figure it out other than Roxy was sure that no Northern Docking Mission was involved because that was too gross even for rump rangers).
Nate shook his head slightly at the absurdity of it all while chewing his sandwich.
Wouldn’t it be easier if everybody could simply fuck who they wanted to fuck and the rest of society minded its own business? As long as everybody involved was above the age of consent and down with the arrangement, what difference did it make to anybody else?
A nice thought. But a complete pipe dream as long as the stick-up-their-ass Earthlings were running the show.
After eating their breakfast Nate cleaned up the kitchen and put everything away. Soon it was time to go. They bade their farewells to Tyler and headed out the door.
They weren’t even in the elevator yet before Tyler was comming Deal to let him know they had the place to themselves until fifteen-thirty or so.
Deal was quite happy to hear the news.
Meanwhile, twelve floors higher in the same building, Roxy was in the kitchen of the rezzie she shared with Xan, carefully folding an omelet over with a spatula. The smell of egg protein, cheese, and canned chili filled the room.
Eighteen dollars apiece. Not bad.
Before Nate-dawg had come along, she and Xan had spent considerably more money on food that tasted considerably worse. Whatever else happened between her and Nate, she would always be grateful for that. The motherfucker had taught them how to cook. Actual cooking. Not just heating packaged shit and pretending it was homemade.
And of course there was the fact that he was a friend. That was nice too. A good friend was hard to find. And a hard friend was good to find. Nate was both, having discovered the secret during his voyage to Mars the same way that she had. And the Darla bitch who had initiated him had done a good job. Nate was the bomb when it came to fucking. Especially that thing he did with his mouth down on her twat. It felt almost as good as when he was truly railing her. Better in some ways.
Nate said he came up with the kiss on his own, had just been inspired to do it one day when they had been fucking. But she didn’t believe him. The Darla bitch had taught him that. That was the only thing that made sense. And she was glad she had. She only wished the bitch hadn’t introduced him to that whole Northern Docking Mission bullshit. She had tried it. She really had. And having his member in her mouth had actually been kind of sexy in a way, but the thought of the thing erupting in her mouth ... she just couldn’t get into while that was a possibility. Thankfully Nate-dawg understood.
The omelet sizzled pleasantly as she lowered the heat.
Since neither of them planned to go anywhere until dinner over at Nate and Tyler’s place later that afternoon, they were both dressed comfortably. Xan was stretched out on the couch in the living area wearing one of her oversized shirts. It hung almost to her knees. She probably wasn’t wearing a bra. Then again, Roxy couldn’t be sure. The shirt was so loose on her that it was hard to tell. Despite being shower-buddies for nearly two years, Roxy had never actually seen Xan’s tits. Women casually stripping in front of each other simply was not a thing in their culture. The fact that Xan wandered around the rezzie wearing nothing but an oversized shirt was already a sign of unusual comfort between them.
Roxy herself was dressed in loose shorts and a sleeveless top. A sturdy support garment beneath it kept everything properly restrained. A necessary precaution. The girls were heavy. Letting them swing around freely was both socially questionable and physically hazardous. Being hit in the face with a two-kilogram tit while you were going down a flight of stairs was something to be reckoned with.
Roxy carried the first omelet over to the table and set it in front of Xan. Her shower-buddy immediately grabbed a fork and dug in while washing it down with a glass of fake orange juice.
She took the first bite and nodded appreciatively. “Good shit, ho-bag,” she said.
“Fuck your mama,” Roxy replied with the standard polite vermin/greenie expression that meant ‘thank you.’ “One of these days I’ll actually make some of that chili Nate-dawg makes and turn it into omelets the next morning.”
“I fuckin’ love Nate’s chili,” Xan said. “The motherfucker can cook.”
“He’s an assfucker at it,” Roxy agreed.
She returned to the stove and worked on her own breakfast. Her thoughts drifted briefly toward Nate again. She wondered if he might be up for a walk in the park that night. Lissa had spent the previous night with him, so there was a good chance she would not be there again tonight. Roxy knew pretty much everything Nate and Lissa were doing with each other. She heard it from both of them after every encounter. It seemed there was a human desire to brag about sexual exploits and she was the only one they could actually brag too. That gave her a front row seat.
Hell, she had practically been the one to push Lissa down that road in the first place.
The girl had been as thoroughly Earth-fucked as anybody Roxy had ever met. Every conversation about sex circled back around to marriage. Every conversation about marriage did not involve sex or even love, but security and a bigger rezzie and ‘what girls in their twenties are supposed to do.’ Roxy had finally convinced her to stop worrying about what society thought and just enjoy where life took her. Lissa had been reluctant at first—very reluctant—but then she and Nate had started kissing. Real kissing. That had accomplished more than all of Roxy’s arguments combined.
Nate was a fantastic kisser. And once that particular wall came down, the others had not lasted long.
Roxy smiled faintly to herself. She was not the least bit jealous of Lissa and sincerely hoped Lissa was not jealous of her.
I’m a slut, she thought without the slightest trace of shame.
She had made her peace with that fact a long time ago. She wanted to fuck Nate-dawg because he was good at it and available. Why should she care if he also fucked Lissa? As long as he could squeeze her in for a meeting in the park a few nights a week, she was perfectly happy.
And Nate was not the only one she was working. She was in the process of leading one of her coworkers down the path of friendship as well. She still had not sealed the deal, but she was getting closer. And she knew Nate-dawg would not give a shit when it finally came to pass. They did not belong to each other. Neither of them had ever pretended otherwise. The only thing that made people nervous about that sort of arrangement was upbringing.
Sex was safe on Mars. No diseases. No pregnancy scares. No hidden consequences waiting to jump out of the bushes and ruin your life. It was honestly a wonder that more greenies did not embrace that fact.
The second omelet was finally done. Roxy slid it onto a plate and carried it over to the table. Then she sat down across from Xan and picked up her fork.
“What do you wanna do today?” Roxy asked her. “Nate and Lissa both got off-recs to do. Tye already said he’s got some fuckin’ plans. Maybe walk over to the park and hit the beer bash?”
Xan thought it over for a moment. “I got an idea,” she said.
“What’s your fuckin’ idea?”
“Let’s stay in the rezzie, pitch in for a hundo of some Brown and a sixer of beer and get fucked up.”
Roxy thought this over for a moment and then smiled. “Let’s do it.”
“You make the run down to the fuckin’ lobby,” Xan says. “You’re dressed. Kind of.”
“Can’t you get dressed, ho-bag?” Roxy asked.
“It was my idea,” Xan said, as if that settled everything.
“Fine,” Roxy said with a sigh. “Should I pick up some of those ice cream bars too?”
“Fuckin’ A,” Xan said with a smile.
Roxy changed into more presentable shorts and put on her mocks. She brushed out her hair, pulled it into a ponytail, and then headed for the door. She took her clinker with her but nothing else. The clinker was mostly habit. All she really needed for the mission was her fingerprint.
“Anything else we need while I’m buying the ice cream bars?” she asked.
“How about a couple bags of popcorn?” Xan suggested. “That and the ice cream can be our fuckin’ lunch.”
“Sounds like an assfuck,” Roxy agreed.
She made the trip, riding down to the lobby and visiting the intox shop before stopping by the AgriCorp store. The total for everything came to three hundred and forty-two dollars.
Xan was good for her half. The thought that she wouldn’t be never even entered Roxy’s mind. Greenies—even when they hadn’t been shower-buddies for the past two years—tended to be honest and straightforward with each other. They would cheat an Earthling if they could get away with it, maybe even one of those ass-sucking greenie supervisor fucks, but not each other. Everybody came from the same place. Everybody knew what it was like to have nothing. Stealing from another greenie just wasn’t static. And besides, there was no need to steal when everyone had a job. True, most greenies barely had a pot to piss in and were heavily in debt, but they had all their basic needs taken care of. And the no-burn loans let them have a little fun.
She made the trip back upstairs and the two shower-buddies settled up. Xan sent one hundred and seventy-one dollars to her and the money was in Roxy’s account before she even took off the nicer shorts and changed back into the lounging pair she wouldn’t be caught dead outside the rezzie in.
Afterward she undid her ponytail, ran a brush through her hair a few more times, and wandered back into the living room.
Xan already had the vape kit out and two beers open on the coffee table.
“Let’s do this shit, ho-bag,” she said.
“Fuckin’ A,” Roxy agreed, dropping onto the couch beside her.
The two females toked up three hits apiece of the Brown and washed it down with their first beer. By the time they cracked open the second beer, they were feeling quite fine indeed. Xan even got a little giggly, which was something that only happened when she was strongly buzzed.
They munched on popcorn and watched the surface of Mars drift by on the viewscreen, which was showing a live feed from one of the low-orbit satellites. The dust storm was plainly visible and both of them spent a few stoned minutes just staring at it. Occasionally there would be a flash from inside the clouds as lightning occurred.
It was no longer over the New Pittsburgh area. Nate and Lissa had both been able to go back to work. But the storm itself was still there, moving steadily northeast with the prevailing winds.
“I can see why Nate and Lissa got the week off for that shit,” Xan said, breaking the silence after an indeterminate amount of time.
“Yeah,” Roxy agreed around a mouthful of popcorn. “I guess the real deal happens every once in a while, right?”
“That’s deep shit, ho-bag,” Xan told her with a smile.
Roxy noted that Xan’s eyes were half-lidded and more than a little red. She was really feeling the Brown. That made Roxy happy because she was feeling it too. It was much more fun to be stoned with someone else than to be stoned alone.
The two of them got the giggles and spent a bit doing that even though neither of them had said anything even remotely funny. Every time one of them got herself under control, the other would snort or grin or make some stupid observation and set them both off again.
It was a good time. Just the sort of time that Roxy liked to have when she wasn’t fucking someone. The most fun she could have with a girl anyway.
Or so she thought.
Eventually the giggles dried up and the silence returned. It was a comfortable silence. The sort that only happened when you knew somebody well enough that neither of you felt obligated to fill the empty space with mindless chatter.
“Can I confess something to you, Rox?” Xan asked, her expression serious now.
“Fuckin’ A,” Roxy replied, wondering what her shy shower-buddy could possibly have to confess.
“Maybe I shouldn’t,” Xan said after a moment, blushing slightly. “Forget I asked.”
“No, no,” Roxy said immediately. “Tell me your confession. Trust me. Nothing you could say could shock me.”
Xan thought it over for a moment and then finally nodded.
“Okay,” she said. “Here’s my fuckin’ confession.”
Roxy waited.
“I know about you and Nate-dawg.”
“You know what about us?” Roxy asked, not even a hint of what Xan was actually talking about entering her brain.
“I know that the two of you are fucking,” Xan said.
Roxy just stared at her for a very long moment, her brain suddenly vapor locked. “Okayyy,” she finally said. “I was wrong. You can shock me.”
“Sorry,” Xan said with a shrug.
“Where in the world did you ever get this idea?” Roxy asked out of sheer reflex. Yes, she was a slut. Yes, Xan was right. But you didn’t just admit shit like that. Not until you heard the evidence anyway.
“Because I watch things and pay attention to details,” Xan said.
“What the fuck does that mean?” Roxy asked, wondering if her normally shy and unassuming shower-buddy really did know something or was simply taking a wild stab in the dark.
“It means just that,” Xan said. “I’m observant by necessity. I grew up an un-person. Couldn’t enroll in school. Couldn’t go to the fuckin’ free clinic to see a doc, not even to get my reproductive block installed when I got my fuckin’ period because I didn’t exist. I had to live with bleeding every fuckin’ month for years, ho-bag. Fuckin’ years until I was finally able to get a black market repro block put in when I was nineteen years old so I could pass the physical to get hired for Mars. Somehow Tye managed to make that happen for me.”
“I understand it was rough growing up without being fuckin’ real,” Roxy said. “But what does that have to do with you thinking that me and Nate are fucking? I don’t see the connection.”
“The connection is that in order to survive I had to learn to watch everything, to see everything, to fuckin’ know everything it was possible for me to know. And that’s how I happened to notice what is going on with you and Nate-dawg. Tell me I’m wrong. I fuckin’ dare you, ho-bag.” She was smiling as she said this, a challenging smile.
Roxy was very careful about how she answered. “You are the watchful fuckin’ silent type, slut-dawg,” Roxy told her. “I will give you that shit. So tell me what details you’ve discovered that leads you to believe in this mythical fuckin’ relationship with some motherfucker I just happen to know through you and your brother.”
And Xan did just that.
She explained it almost exactly the way she had explained it to Nate weeks before, though Roxy was not aware of that, of course. Watching the two of them together. The little whispers. The shared looks. The way they seemed to communicate things without actually saying them.
Roxy listened, thinking that she could probably explain it away if she needed to. People misinterpreted shit all the time. Friendships got mistaken for courtship. Courtship got mistaken for friendship. Coke got mistaken for fuckin’ Pepsi. Motherfuckers saw what they wanted to see.
Then Xan kept talking. She brought up the late-night walks. She brought up the showers afterward. She brought up information she’d gathered from Tyler—her brother and Nate’s butt-buddy—about how Nate had a habit of taking those walks on certain nights. The same nights Roxy happened to disappear for an hour or so. At the same times. The same nights she happened to come back and immediately shower. And Nate did the same at his end.
The more Xan talked, the less room there was to maneuver.
Roxy found herself becoming impressed despite herself. The little weirdo really had been paying attention. And unlike most people, she had actually put the pieces together.
Not all of them. But enough.
By the time Xan finished, Roxy knew there was no point pretending anymore. This wasn’t a guess. It wasn’t even a suspicion.
It was knowledge. Maybe not complete knowledge. But knowledge all the same.
“All right,” she said with a sigh.
Xan sat quietly, waiting.
“You’re right,” Roxy admitted. “We’re fucking each other.”
Xan did not seem surprised by this revelation. “Don’t it feel better to not keep it secret?” she asked.
“Actually,” Roxy said after thinking it over, “it kind of does.”
“I thought it might,” Xan said.
Roxy looked up at her. “So now you know I’m a slut by definition. Not just slut-dawg like any other bitch in society, but a literal fuckin’ slut.”
“Yep,” Xan said, picking up a handful of popcorn from the bag.
“Does that bother you?” Roxy had to ask.
Xan answered her question with a question. “Does it bother you?”
“No,” Roxy said immediately. “Truth be told, it’s fuckin’ glorious being a slut. It’s the best decision I ever made after deciding to apply for a job on fuckin’ Mars.”
Roxy kept expecting Xan to be shocked by her words, but she saw no evidence of it. Quite the opposite in fact. Xan seemed quite interested.
“Why?” she asked.
“Why what?” Roxy returned with a question of her own.
“Why are you a slut?” Xan asked. “I’m not trying to shame you or any shit like that. I have no problem with you being a slut at all. In fact, I fuckin’ respect you for it. What I don’t understand is why you want to be a slut. Is sex really that fun?”
“Yes,” Roxy said immediately. “It is quite literally the best fucking thing in life.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“I don’t get it. I mean ... I feel ... you know ... wanting for things like sex. I can’t help it. But everything in life is overrated. Fuckin’ everything. And we’ve been taught all our lives that sex is just to make a baby and it’s something you just have to do no matter how disgusting it is. But it can’t be disgusting if you and Nate-dawg are going to all the lengths you go to just to do it. Does it really feel that good when he sticks his cock inside of your twat? I’ve put my fingers in mine before and it feels ... okay I guess ... but I must be missing something here. Obviously sex is fun or you wouldn’t want to keep doing it in the middle of the night in the fuckin’ park, right?”
“Right,” Roxy said. “There’s more to it than just him putting his cock in you.”
“How much more?” Xan wanted to know.
