Sunday morning at home, I avoided any serious discussion about the day before with Ellie. I wanted two other couples involved in a broader discussion. Jake and Anna appeared right on the dot of ten a.m., and Greg and Ally were close behind. Ellie was surprised at their arrival, and I told her to give me a second to get organized for something.

I got everyone something to drink and had us sit in a circle on the patio. I had my iPad nearby for any notes.

I set the stage, “Okay, the purpose of this gathering is to talk about what happened yesterday at the beach when Ellie and Ally met some hot guys and flirted heavily with them. Jake and I talked briefly and thought of possible outcomes.”

Ellie started to protest but I held up my hand.

“I am not upset by what happened, but it has implications for our friendship circle, and that’s why I asked a sample of that group here: Jake and Anna to sit in and give opinions. Also, Anna, being younger, might have a newer and fresher perspective on some of the things we thought about.

“I fantasized overnight about some of the directions their quick friendships with the college guys could go. I saw both women give out their contact information and that invited further contact and possibly some dates separate from your marriages and our circle. That raises many issues about boundaries and rules to me, and that’s why I wanted us to have some discourse about the possibilities and any rules we should agree. The past is past, it’s what might happen in the future that is my concern, and there only to be sure we’re on the same page.”

Ellie finally protested, “Nothing really happened. We flirted with them, and yes, we gave them our names and phone numbers.”

Greg asked, “Were either of you wearing your wedding rings? Did you mention to the guys that you were married? How did you explain our group of six couples to them?”

Ellie and Ally were strangely silent.

I added, “Later, you went in the tent for some beach sex with Darren, and I think those guys were close enough and downwind that they probably saw that fact and heard your moans. I’m sure that communicated something.”

Ally defended, “I didn’t wear my rings. I didn’t want to lose them in the sand or water ... and I’m sorry that neither of us mentioned our status. We just said that we were with friends. That was all part of maintaining our ability to flirt and get some validation from the guys.”

“Validation?” Jake asked with a lilt.

“Confirmation that we were hot women and still young enough to be able to attract the attention and interest of a couple of some hunky college men,” Ally stated.

Greg asked, “What’d you talk about?”

“Names, jobs, majors, schools we’d attended, where they lived around town, and stuff like that. The two we first talked at the concession stand were Brad and Martyn. Martyn is from England and has a winning accent. The one we met later at their blankets was Mark. The three are in the same fraternity – Phi Theta Rho or PTR, they said. They were all juniors. Brad is a computer science major. Martyn is studying business and accountancy.”

I asked, “What were your plans for when they call and ask you for a date?”

There was a long silence. Ellie and Ally looked at each other, but there was no answer forthcoming. They obviously hadn’t thought that far ahead. Ally shrugged, “You think they’ll call?”

I teased but with a serious tone, “They Will call to ask you out on dates. You were the hottest women in the state yesterday and barely dressed even when you had both parts of your bikinis on. They want you in many ways, including in bed somewhere. They want to see if you’ll follow-through on all that teasing and touching you instigated.” We all laughed.

Ellie slowly said, “We didn’t think much beyond the moment yesterday. When they asked for our names and numbers on their phones, I didn’t think it would lead anywhere. You really think they’ll call? They know we’re older, just not by how much. We ducked that question.”

Simultaneously, Jake, Anna, Greg, and I nodded and said, “Yes, they’ll call,” in unison.

Ally said, “What should we do?”

I spread my arms wide, “THAT is the question and why I thought we should talk sooner rather than later.”

Anna said, “There seem to be two obvious possibilities. One, you blow them off, turn them down, and shut down any further contact. You block their numbers. Alternately, you accept a date and go out with them. If that happens, the next question is how far do you go on that date or subsequent ones, and do you reveal your marital status?”

Greg said in a teasing tone to the group, “Does anybody want to see the boys shut down?”

No one said a word. Eventually, Jake laughed.

Greg said, “So, you two go on a few dates with the fraternity men. That leads to more questions to consider.”

I asked, “How much emotional and physical closeness are you looking for outside your marriage and our friendship circle? Is that more validation?”

Ellie spoke, “None ... but it might be fun to push those limits a bit.”

Anna chuckled, “They want sex and maybe deeper relationships with you. You shouldn’t lead them on if you’re not ready to follow through to some degree.”

I said, “I propose some rules to that end. I use that term rather than boundaries, because I think for everyone’s sanity you need to agree within our group that there needs to be a couple of hard boundaries on your behavior – really the behavior of anybody in our friendship circle if they find an ‘outside’ friend.” I made air quote around the word outside.

Ally looked surprised at my serious tone. She asked, “You have some in mind?”

“I do. First, when you have sex, condoms get used and precautions about STDs are taken – even testing and the sharing of lab paperwork. If you ever go bareback you isolate for a safe time period until the right testing clears you.

“Second, your existing partners, relationships, and friendships are never – NEVER – deprecated or disrespected – not in conversation, teasing, or jesting.

“Third, at the least hint that you are shifting your emotional attachment to someone else, you talk openly and honestly to your spouses and partners about what’s going on and how you’re feeling about your new friends.

“Fourth, if your spouse or partner feels the outside relationship is getting out of control in any way, they can end it instantly with no argument, no questions.”

I paused, “Does anybody have any additions or suggestions?”

Jake said, “What about sharing what happens on those dates?”

I shrugged, “I don’t want to be controlling. I certainly would like to know what goes on – maybe even as the date is underway. I think Ellie and Ally or whomever will have to decide how much they’re willing to share. I’d like the details, plus I don’t want to find out some embarrassing or key fact accidentally or secondhand.”

Anna asked, “How often do they go on a date? Frequency?”
