“Family meeting time!”

Glancing around the table on the veranda, all seven of my crested Siblings looked at me expectantly. Tom, Armando and John had taken the four UCLA Siblings, plus the sorority Siblings down to the dungeon. The Brothers had taken to calling it the holodeck. Not totally inaccurate, but it fell short of the Star Trek version.

Doris Alex grinned, “Yeah, they’re going to be down below for hours, so we have privacy.”

Instead of the usual sunshine, it was a cloudy but warm morning. The normally turquoise water was almost gray. But that would change soon. We had all consumed a savory breakfast of saltfish, veggie blend, scrambled eggs, avocado, and deep fried bread rolls. My Siblings wore coverups with bikinis underneath. As usual, the staff left to give us our privacy.

“Okay, I believe everyone has heard about what we are doing with the Antigua and Barbuda government. We made a tremendous financial contribution to their rebuilding efforts from the hurricane, long-term energy independence, and help with lower income housing.

“And Molly will help hold them accountable by serving as the vice chair of the independent Integrity Commission ... to which we also provided multi-year funding. Questions or comments?”

Maggie said, “I just want to thank Gwen and Molly for their efforts. We will do so much good for this country.”

“I have a question. Will Gwen and Molly be coming back regularly?” Teresa asked.

I replied, “I will need to come back several times a year, I expect, not counting our ... vacations. I should be able to coordinate for when Gwen and Molly need to be here. As you know, we have a fast jet ... so we can be here in seven hours. Gwen, Molly?”

Gwen laughed and patted her belly, “Like, baby ... end of summer, dude and dudettes. That said, I need to consult on the ground, so I will have to make a trip or two this summer, and then after the baby is born.”

“Oh, the heat and humidity here this summer ... and being pregnant!” Teresa blurted.

“They are all sweethearts and grateful for the help. They will take good care of me, as will our Brother. But also, I have help lined up ... several experts who will fly in.”

“I should be able to conference in online for much of my duties. I will still fly in occasionally, but they can be quick trips and work around classes.” Molly weighed in.

“Speaking of flying, does everyone know that we have a second jet on order? We should have it by this fall at the latest.” I got nods, so I moved on.

“Question for y’all: within our gates, you are all my Siblings. However, in the outside world, what would you prefer to be called?”

“Girlfriends?” Addy offered.

I nodded, but said, “I think we can do better, and Gwen will soon have my baby.”

“It can’t be wives ... that sounds a touch illegal, but if it wasn’t ... I’d like that,” Gwen said.

“So I will jump in and tell you about something I got accomplished. One of our new companies is Flying V of Antigua, ILLC. Y’all and I are all official partners. All our real estate will be owned by the international limited liability company, plus a healthy amount of our money.

“Now, Molly, say we are at a meeting with the government here, or hell ... even talking to one of your college professors at Oregon, what would you like to be addressed as?”

“Ohh ... partner!”

“Brother, that is literally fire. I love it. Respectful and valid!” Gwen said and smiled.

“We can claim you as our partner as well!” Doris Alex said.

After talking to Gwen just before boarding the yacht, I had planned to wait to have this conversation with my Siblings, but I felt it too important not to share with them now. I had already discussed some of this with Lisa ... so it was time. Just as I was about to begin, a little light, misty rain fell.

“Perfect timing for the next topic. Let’s move inside to the bar area with the big tv, I have a couple clips I want to play.”

My seven Siblings and I pulled chairs up and gathered in a semicircle around the tv. Prepared, I cast my phone to the big screen and hit play.

It was the old Seinfeld clip where George Costanza gives his famous advice on how to beat a lie detector test, “It’s not a lie ... if you believe it.”

“Oh, hey Seinfeld! I watched the reruns. I even saw that episode,” Teresa offered.

“Yeah, I saw it with my mom.” Lisa said.

“Good, but the clip still works even if you never saw the show. I am about to rock your beliefs. Do you want to know the truth, or be happily ignorant?”

“I’ll take ignorant, Brother!” Molly piped in. “Just kidding!”

“I’ll play one more clip first.” Five words of the next clip I expected everyone had heard several times. “You can’t handle the truth!” It had become part of our culture. But I played the two minutes plus of the Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson A Few Good Men movie scene.

“Still want the truth? This will change your worldview, and your view, and your beliefs in us.” I asked.

A couple Siblings coughed. Maggie said, “Now, this is ominous.” But everyone agreed. They wanted the truth.

“What I am going to lead you through will have many implications, beg many questions, but for today, I’ll lay out the big strokes. It might be difficult to accept. I know it was for me. So I’ll give you time to think about it. I know I needed time. And ... this is not to be discussed with anyone else ... until the time is right.”

I had everyone’s full attention. Gwen’s face did not hide her concern; she knew where I was going. Lisa thought she knew; and, well, knew some of it. The rest, a look of curiosity.

“I am going to offer up a few things, which will lead to a conclusion. A conclusion that should be obvious ... as it sinks in.

“Y’all know my biological father is David Feather, but now I know who his father was ... who my biological grandfather was. Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, who became Charles XIV John ... he was the King of Sweden and Norway. He died in 1844.”

Silently, I waited for a reaction. Addy concealed an ever so slight smile on her face. Did she already know? Frowns grew on several of the others as they thought of the date of his death. “Eighteen forty-four? How is that possible, Brother?” Maggie was the first to ask.

Doris Alex interrupted me before I could answer and blurted, “And how could that ever be proven?”

“Gwendolen has the proof, the hair follicles of which were hidden in the ring. I am his grandson. She will reveal the proof soon, I imagine. But I have been avoiding her for the last few days. And, come to think of it, she has not tried to contact me either. Gwen, have you heard from her?”

“Not a word.”

I continued. “Anyway, the how will become clear at the end. Allow that nugget to settle while I proceed to the next truth, which you will at first find difficult.”

“You all have been told stories of the original Sibling Bloodlines. The stories of each line’s strengths. And how they bred those lines. The eugenics the Siblings accomplished. The current state of the Bloodlines. Me as a Bloodline Brother. The powers of the twins. The abilities of Ian, Alexander, Elizabeth, and the rest. All bred ... except the Ekaterina line, which wasn’t bred, but whose line has always been prized for unyielding loyalty, of which David Feather was the long-lost member.”

“The history is clear, Brother! We all know it.” Doris Alex broke in, a bit of irritation clear in her voice.

“Ah, but do you believe this history?”

“Certainly, it has been thoroughly documented.” More irritation in her voice.

“Where did the original Bloodlines come from?”

“Obviously, they were the first to pledge themselves to the Brotherhood.”

“And their original varied talents, all natural?”

“Of course, Brother. They were the first, and the best!”

“And what came since? The development of your talents, my abilities, the Ian? On and on, the talents to what exists today in the Bloodlines?”

“Highly successful breeding, Brother! Why would you question that?”

“Everyone here has taken at least AP biology back in high school. Many of you have taken advanced classes in college. Hell, Doris Alex, you have taken genetic and evolutionary bio classes. You are a scientist! Is any of this at all possible?”

“Fuck, Brother, my head hurts! Stop it. This is insane to question.” Doris Alex shouted.

“Everyone think! Break this indoctrination! I’m not speaking of hair color, eye color, or skin color ... but special abilities. Even the very simplest of human eugenics would take hundreds of generations. In the last one thousand years, there have only been forty generations for the Sibling breeders to have performed their magic.

“Then think of the complexity. Intelligence does not improve through just one gene; many genes contribute to it. And the pitfalls of inbreeding. And developing powers from scratch? That did now exist in humans to start with? You are talking about mutations that would take many thousands of years. The technology did not exist even fifty years ago ... certainly not a thousand years ago.”

Maggie struggled forward, “But why do we all believe? It all seems beyond question.”

“We all have huge blind spots. We accepted the stories without question. Indoctrination is not just the domain of Siblings.” I whispered.

“But why, but how?” Molly asked.
