The work grew.
It wasn’t only laundry and scrubbing anymore. Hugh left more for us to do. Clothes to fold, dishes to wipe, crumbs to sweep up in the kitchen when the curtains were pinned tight. Always after dark, always quiet.
Mom and I did most of it. She wiped counters while I stacked plates, or we folded sheets together at the table. But sometimes Dad came too, carrying a heavy basket down or hauling the bucket.
Hugh gave him tasks like that. Then he turned back to Mom.
“Put those shirts in the bottom drawer,” he’d say.
Or “Leave the broom by the door. I’ll take care of the rest.”
He hardly looked at me. He didn’t look at Dad at all, not really. But when Mom nodded, when she whispered yes, he did look.
We had just finished drying the dishes. Mom brushed her hands together, ready to slip back to the room, when Hugh spoke.
“Stay a moment,” he said. Quiet, but direct.
She froze, half-turned toward the hall. “For what?”
“A glass of wine,” he answered. “It’s been a long week.”
Her eyes flicked to me, then back to him. For a heartbeat, I thought she would refuse. But she gave a small smile and said softly, “I’d love to.”
I carried the folded laundry on my own, my arms tight around the basket. In the safe room, Dad looked up.
“Where’s your mother?”
“She’s coming,” I said, my throat dry.
We waited.
It was longer than it should have been. Much longer.
When the wardrobe finally opened, Mom stepped through. Her cheeks were warm, her eyes bright in the dim lamplight. There was a sweetness on her breath.
