After Claire, the house changed.
Hugh brought the trays now. No comfort, no smile. He came less regularly, sometimes late, sometimes early, always abrupt.
He never looked at me. Rarely at Dad. But when Mom whispered thank you, he paused. Just for a moment. His eyes would briefly flick to her face, then drop again to the tray.
It was nothing. But it felt like more than nothing.
Dad saw it too. I could tell from the way his jaw tightened. He never said a word.
Hugh would sigh as he left, sometimes muttering under his breath. “Too many ghosts in this house,” or “I can’t have anyone here.” But once, after Mom murmured another thank you, he stopped in the doorway and said, low, “It’s not your fault.”
The coats swayed shut, and we were left in the dim light of the lamp.
Most evenings were the same. The wardrobe creaked, Hugh appeared, the tray landed on the table with more force than it needed. He never lingered.
Sometimes he sighed so loudly it filled the room even after he left. Once he muttered, “A house isn’t meant to be this full,” as though we were crowding him without ever leaving the walls.
Another time, as he set the tray down harder than usual, he said, “People are asking. Why the curtains stay drawn. Why I don’t invite anyone over.” His eyes flicked toward Mom, sharp but quick, like the words weren’t really for her but found her anyway.
Mom bowed her head and whispered thanks.
