When the curtains were drawn, I moved through the house almost like it was mine. Mom had given up protesting.
My relationship with Hugh was unequal but I’m not sure in which way. I was stuck in his house. Dependent on him for food, water, clothes, and most of all safety.
But for the first time since Claire had died, he properly had someone. Someone to watch a movie. To play a board game. To enjoy a meal. To share a bed.
Yes, Mom had been there too. But she’d been a poor substitute. Stepping in out of duty more than anything else.
Sometimes of course he still had her in his bed, but I was always there too.
I could make him happy. When I rode him, I had him in my control. I’d learned how to touch him. How to squeeze him. How to empty him so he flopped on the bed exhausted.
Often, I enjoyed it too. But I also enjoyed what I’d become. I was sixteen now. I had a man that protected me that I could make happy and control.
Hugh came back from work. I was aching for him to close the curtains and let me out. He usually let Mom and Dad out too now, though they kept out of his way. When they’d done the chores, they’d usually retreat to the small sitting room. I think they were getting closer again, though I hadn’t heard them having sex.
When the panel finally moved, I shot out to give him a hug.
“I missed you!”
“Me too.”
I think he still used sex as a way to punish my parents for the position they’d put him in. Or more precisely that Claire hat put him in.
The good thing is I didn’t mind. Maybe that’s why he made dad watch on movie nights though.
That evening it was Dambusters. He’d seen the movie plenty and to be fair he wasn’t actually watching it.
