Some night Hugh took Mom, some nights me. There wasn’t much of a pattern, and it didn’t feel like the romantic love in my books. Was there anything Mom was doing better than me? And why was she still going to his bed?
There was no point protecting me from something I thought wanted.
I’d finished with the bathroom when I tiptoed past the sitting room. From the slurping sounds I gathered Mom was in there with Hugh.
I snuck to the door to get a peek. Hugh was on the couch with his trousers dropped. Mom was kneeling on the floor, with his penis in her mouth, her head bobbing up and down as she gave him pleasure.
I stood there quietly, watching.
When Hugh locked eyes with me I froze in panic and wanted to run.

I hesitated.

I stayed silent.
