I stood by the mirror, rolling the waistband of my skirt once, then again, until it sat higher on my legs. The blouse I tied tighter at the waist, knotting the ends instead of buttoning them straight. My hair I shook loose, letting it fall down my back. For the first time in years, I felt ... like me. Or maybe someone new.
Mom didn’t like it. “You’re not going out like that.”
I didn’t move. “I can do what I want.”
“No you can’t. It’s indecent.”
Behind her, Dad looked up from his chair. His eyes flicked over me once, then away. His jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
“I’m not a child anymore,” I muttered, smoothing the skirt with my palms.
“You’re my child,” Mom hissed. “Change it back.”
I lifted my chin. “No.”
She raised her hand, as if to smack me, then dropped it. She swallowed hard, shaking her head.
Hugh had us in the kitchen that night, cleaning dishes and sorting away the shopping.
I reached for a jar just as he did, letting my fingers brush his. “Got it,” I said lightly, almost teasing.
His eyes flicked to me, the barest twitch of a smile at the corner of his mouth, before he set down the next tin.
Mom saw. She moved closer to him, too close, her hip brushing his arm as she took a bag. “Careful,” she muttered at me, but she didn’t look up.
I carried the jar to the pantry, letting the skirt swing higher as I walked. When I leaned to place it on the shelf, I slowed just enough to know he was watching. When I turned, I met his eyes directly, and for a moment neither of us looked away.
